Stein is the 10th women to win both #1 singles and doubles at Intercollegiates, and the first since Annie Roberts in 2022.

In singles, Stein defeated Erin Slutzky (Arizona State) in the final. She won the first game, 15-8, and was up 13-12 in game two, when Slutzky slammed her eyeguards into the floor after the rally. It seemed like that outburst was without cause, although watching the end of the rally again, Stein’s followthrough may have hit Slutzky in the face. But if so, Stein seemed oblivious to that.

Regardless, it was an odd end to the match.

Stein and Case’s doubles win was their second consecutive title. This time they defeated Chloe Hilsenteger and Katt Macgregor of Oregon State, 15-11, 13-15, 11-5, in the final. Hilsenteger and Macgregor’s 2nd place finish is an improvement on their 3rd place finish last year.

On the men's side, Benjamin Horner (Des Moines Area Community College) defeated Timothy Jack (Brigham Young University), 15-10, 9-15, 11-6, in the Men’s #1 Singles final. In the semi-finals, Jack defeated top seed Ariel Tito (Colorado State), who won the title in 2022, 14-15, 15-11, 11-7, while Horner beat Ben Baron (Creighton), who was the runner-up in 2022, 15-11, 15-4.

Tito did claim the Men's Doubles title, as he and Samuel Lazcano Ramirez came back to defeat Cody Boucher and Tucker Elkins (Oregon State), 6-15, 15-7, 11-3, in the final.

Team standings

Oregon State was the overall team winner, and men’s team winner. Brigham Young topped the women’s team standings (Oregon State was second), and they were second in the men’s and overall standings.

The other top schools were the University of Missouri (3rd in men’s, 4th in women’s, 3rd overall), Baldwin Wallace University (3rd in women’s, 5th overall) and Liberty University (5th in men’s, 4th overall).

Intercollegiate participation

There were 110 players at the 2024 Intercollegiate Championships, which was about the same as the 109 at the 2023 championships. That remains lower than the pre-pandemic numbers, which were regularly over 200.

The men to women participation rate was similar to last year with five more men and five fewer women, so 31.8% of the field were women, which is generally better than at most racquetball tournaments. If there were over 30% women participation in tournaments, tournaments would be much bigger.

Quiz!

As mentioned above, Julie Stein is the 10th women to win both #1 singles and doubles at Intercollegiates. Who are the other 9? One was mentioned above. The others are at the bottom of this post.

He defeated Jhonatan Flores, 15-10, 10-15, 11-7, in a final featuring two young Bolivians. In the semi-finals, Gastelum defeated veteran Mauricio Zelada, 15-13, 15-12, and Flores beat Carlos Ramirez, 15-5, 15-6.

Flores impressed in the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) draw in Illinois, as he came within four points of defeating Kane Waselenchuk in the quarterfinals. Thus, it was no surprise to see him in the Men’s Open final.

However, Gastelum’s win suggests we should also be paying attention to him as well.

The 2024 Pan American Championships will begin this Saturday, March 23, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and will run until the following Saturday, March 30. We’ll have a preview for you later this week. But you can be certain that there will be some great racquetball matches coming up in Guatemala.

The Pan Am Championships mean an “international break” in the pro tour schedules. The IRT’s next confirmed main event is the Costa Rica Open, June 12-15, although there was a hint that they will play in California in late May, and there is a “TBD” event listed on the IRT site for May 23-26.

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour’s (LPRT’s) next event is the Battle at the Alamo, April 25-28, in San Antonio, Texas. That could be very well attended, as San Antonio will host the 2024 International Racquetball Federation World Championships in August, so some players may want to get a chance to play on the courts that will host Worlds.

It’s his second consecutive title, and the first time since 2020 that he’s won back to back IRT titles. Moscoso came in as the #1 IRT player, and Waselenchuk #8, although the win should move Waselenchuk up a couple of spots in the rankings.

It was #1 versus #2 in the doubles final, as top seeds Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla squared off against 2nd seeds Rodrigo Montoya and Erick Trujillo. Manilla and Parrilla won, but they needed three games to claim the victory, winning 15-7, 7-15, 11-6. It’s also Manilla and Parrilla’s second consecutive doubles title.

At the start of game one of the singles final, it looked like Moscoso might win, as he took an early 3-0 lead. Waselenchuk then scored five straight points to lead 5-3. Moscoso tied it at 5-5, and they were also tied at 6-6.

Then Waselenchuk went ahead, and when he got to 10-4, Moscoso called a timeout. He managed to get back within two points at 11-9, but a winning serve return by Waselenchuk off a Moscoso drive serve to the left side - the lefthanded Waselenchuk’s forehand - then led to four straight points on as many rallies, which ended game one at 15-9.

Mosocso also had a lead early in game two at 4-3. But Waselenchuk tied it at 4-4, and pushed on to lead 10-4, and put the writing on the wall.

He finished the match off with back to back drive serve aces to the left side of the court (Mosoco’s backhand).

”I felt like I was in control the whole match,” Waselenchuk said afterwards. “It’s nice to be champ again. Funny to think that no one thought I’d … [win again], and here I am [winning] two tournaments in a row. Boy, were you guys wrong. I like proving everybody wrong.”

Could Waselenchuk finish #1 again on tour? He said “I like the competition. I like the challenge. It’s a new challenge for me,” and he has to play guys “half my age.”

We never advised of betting against Waselenchuk when he was in his prime, and we don’t advise betting against him now.

The next confirmed IRT main event is the Costa Rica Open, June 12-15, although after the doubles match Manilla said that he’d see everyone in southern California in late May, and there is a “TBD” event listed on the IRT site for May 23-26. The win sets up a showdown with former IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk, as 6th seeded Waselenchuk broke Jhonatan Flores’s Cinderella run throught the draw, although he needed three games to break it, winning 15-3, 13-15, 11-7.

On the top side of the draw, IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso beat 8th seed Alan Natera in two straight games, 15-6, 15-11, and will play 4th seed Andree Parrilla, who eked out a win over his doubles partner this weekend, the 5th seed Adam Manilla, 15-9, 5-15, 11-7.

We had heard that Flores was the real deal, and he showed as much against Waselenchuk. Waselenchuk was dominant in game one, as Flores didn’t score a point until Waselenchuk had eight. But in game two, Flores’s skill showed through, as he was up 10-7, and despite Waselenchuk tying the game at 13-13, Flores held on to win it 15-13, and force a tie-breaker.

In the breaker, Waselenchuk got the first two points, but then Flores got the next four to lead 4-2. They were tied at 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6. Waselenchuk then took the lead at 7-6 with a forehand cross court shot. Flores did keep it close, as he got within one at 8-7.

But Waselenchuk got to game point at 10-7 on a drive serve ace to the left side - Flores’s backhand side. He won it when Flores skipped a backhand serve return off another drive serve to the left side.

Despite the loss, Flores was very impressive. He aced Waselenchuk a few times in the match, and made great backhand pinch shot winners off Waselenchuk cross courts to the left side. He has a high level of skill at just 18 years old, and should be a considered a threat to beat anyone he faces.

The singles semi-finals will be Saturday at 6 and 7 PM with the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles semis are at noon and 1 PM on Saturday with the final at noon Sunday. This time Flores took out the 14th seed Robert Collins, 15-7, 15—4, in the Round of 16. The win sets up a quarterfinal showdown with former IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk, as Waselenchuk, the 6th seed this weekend, beat 11th seed Jaime Martell, 15-5, 15-5.

The rest of the higher seeded players won in two straight games with the exception of 7th seed Andrés Acuña, who needed a tie-breaker to defeat 10th seed Thomas Carter. Acuña will face 2nd seed Rodrigo Montoya in the quarterfinals, as Montoya beat Carlos Ramirez, 15-6, 15-0, in the 16s, and looked very smooth doing so.

There were two tie-breakers in the doubles quarterfinals, but both were won by the higher seeded teams. Third seeds Kadim Carrasco and Conrrado Moscoso dropped the first game against 6th seeds Carter and Martell, but came back to win, 12-15, 15-2, 11-4. They face 2nd seeds Montoya and Erick Trujillo in the semi-finals Saturday, as Montoya and Trujillo beat 10th seeds Hector Barrios and Flores, 15-3, 15-10.

Similarly on the other side of the draw, 4th seeds Andrés Acuña and Alan Natera lost game one versus 5th seeds Alejandro Cardona and Collins, but came back to win in three, 8-15, 15-11, 11-6. In the semis, Acuña and Natera will play top seeds Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla, who were straight game winners over 9th seeds Diego Gastelum and Cole Sendrey, 15-13, 15-5. Gatelum and Sendrey had a lead late in game one, but couldn’t hold to win it.

Singles play continues Friday afternoon with the quarterfinals from 5 PM on. The semi-finals will be Saturday at 6 and 7 with the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles semis are at noon and 1 PM on Saturday with the final at noon Sunday. The biggest was Jhonatan Flores taking out IRT #3 Jake Bredenbeck, 15-5, 15-7. Sources have told us that Flores - the current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Boys U18 World Junior Champion - is the real deal, but still, taking out the #3 player on tour is a big upset. Impressive.

Flores will play left-hander Robert Collins in the Round of 16 Friday, as Collins eked out a win over Oscar Elias Nieto Valadez, 15-11, 10-15, 11-9, on Thursday.

The other upset comes from the Wily Veteran category, as 21st seed John Goth held on to defeat 12th seed Kadim Carrasco, 15-11, 3-15, 11-7. Veteran Goth defeated Collins two weeks ago in Minneapolis, so that’s two solid wins for him. He’ll play 5th seed Adam Manilla in the 16s Friday, as Manilla beat Luis Aguilar, 15-4, 15-4, on Thursday. Goth and Manilla played in Minneapolis with the left-hander Manilla winning in two straight games.

Flores and partner Hector Barrios, the 10th seeds, beat the 7th seeds Diego Gatica and Jaime Mansilla, 15-7, 15-8, in the doubles Round of 16, so they’ll play 2nd seeds Rodrigo Montoya and Erick Trujillo on Friday in the quarters.

One other upset in doubles, as 9th seeds Diego Gastelum and Cole Sendrey beat 8th seeds Carlos Ramirez and Mauricio Zelada, 15-9, 15-7. They’ll play top seeds Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla in the quarters Friday.

Singles play continues Friday with the Round of 16 at 10 and 11 AM, and they’ll play two rounds Friday with the quarterfinals from 5 PM on. The doubles quarterfinals are Friday at 2 PM. The finals will be Sunday at 11 AM for singles and noon for doubles. Play begins Thursday with the Rounds of 64 and 32 in singles and the Round of 16 in doubles.

Eight of the top 10 and 14 of the top 17 IRT players are in Illinois, led by IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso, #2 Rodrigo Montoya and #3 Jake Bredenbeck. Former #1 Kane Waselenchuk is also in the draw looking to win two consecutive tournaments for the first time since March 2020, when he won the 35th Annual Shamrock Shootout. That was the last of 7 consecutive wins for Waselenchuk.

Montoya withdrew from the doubles final two weeks ago in Minneapolis, as he hurt his ankle stepping on Adam Manilla’s foot. He’s in the singles and doubles draw, so presumably he’s fit, although is he a 100%? We’ll have to see. He’s playing doubles with Erick Trujillo, and they are the second seeds. Manilla and Andree Parrilla - the winners in Minneapolis - are the top seeds in doubles.

Singles play begins Thursday at noon, and they’ll play two rounds on Thursday. The first round of doubles is Thursday night. The finals are on Sunday with singles at 11 AM and doubles at noon. The win moves Longoria up the LPRT rankings from #3 to #2, and drops Mejia from #1 to #3. Maria José Vargas becomes the new #1 player, and it’s the first time she’s been #1.

The win is Longoria’s second this season. Vargas, who Longoria beat in the semi-finals Saturday, has won the other three LPRT events.

Mejia had a 2nd chance to win Sunday, as she and Alexandra Herrera were in the doubles final against Vargas and Natalia Mendez. Herrera and Mejia won the first game, 15-8, but Mendez and Vargas came back to win the next two, 15-10, 11-4, and win the title. It’s their first title of the season, and the first time Herrera and Mejia failed to win the LPRT doubles event.

The next LPRT event will be the Battle at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, April 25-28. If you missed any of the action from Massachusetts, check out the LPRT YouTube channel.

It’s Waselenchuk’s first victory in two years, and first since he tore his achilles in September 2022. Also, it’s 22 1/2 years since Waselenchuk won his first IRT event. Moscoso was six then.

Waselenchuk had a 9-2 lead on Moscoso in game one, helped by three drive serve aces - two to the right and one to the left. But Moscoso came back to 11-11, hitting four drive serve aces, all to the left side - Waselenchuk’s forehand.

Waselenchuk got to game point when Moscoso skipped a backhand pinch shot that made it 14-12. Moscoso fought off that game point with a forehand pinch winner, and made it 14-13 with another drive serve ace to the left side. However, he skipped a forehand that gave the serve back to Waselenchuk.

Waselenchuk won the game on the next rally, when he drove serve to the left side that produced a weak return from Moscoso, so Waselenchuk drove a forehand cross court shot to the right side that Moscoso dove to get, but his resulting shot didn’t make the front wall.

Game two was all Waselenchuk, as he took a 7-0 lead, and pushed on to win 15-2. He closed it out with back to back drive serve aces: one to the left and one to the right.

With the win Waselenchuk has become the oldest winner on the IRT at 42 years and 115 days. Ruben Gonzalez was the previous oldest IRT winner, who was 40 years and 318 days, when he won in June 1993.

It was an emotional win for Waselenchuk who said “I didn’t even know if I was going to be able to play racquetball” after suffering his achilles injury. “That injury effected me so much,” he said, “took so much away from me. But in the end I gained so much from it.”

Doubles

Andree Parrilla and Adam Manilla won doubles, although it was a sad result, as Rodrigo Montoya and Kurtis Cullen had to forfeit the final, at 3-3 in game one, as Montoya turned his left ankle by stepping on Manilla’s right foot. It seemed an innocuous incident, but Montoya hobbled off the court. After some rest, he tried to hit some shots, but decided he wasn’t fit to continue.

It’s Parrilla and Manilla’s second win together. They took the Shamrock Shootout last year, defeating Montoya and Javier Mar in the final.

The IRT will next be in action at the 39th Annual Papa Nicholas Shamrock Shootout in Lombard, Illinois, March 14-17. But not for LPRT #1 Montserrat Mejia, who won both her matches on Saturday. She beat 9th seed Kelani Lawrence in the quarterfinals, 15-2, 15-12, and then 5th seed Alexandra Herrera, 15-7, 15-7, in the semi-finals.

But on the other side of the draw, LPRT #3 - and formerly #1 - Paola Longoria upset #2 Maria José Vargas, 15-13, 15-5. That loss ended Vargas’s three match winning streak. Longoria is the only other player to win on tour this season, doing so at the opening event of the season back in August, when she beat Mejia in tie-breaker.

Vargas gained measure of revenge for that loss in doubles, as she and Natalia Mendez eked out a win over Longoria and Samantha Salas, 15-14, 15-14, in one semi-final. In the other, Mejia and Herrera - the top seeds - beat 5th seeds Angelica Barrios and Brenda Laime, 15-11, 15-8. Mejia and Herrera have won all three LPRT doubles titles this season.

The finals will be Sunday at 11 AM (singles) and noon (doubles). You can watch them live from Massachusetts via the LPRT YouTube channel. All times Eastern.

Moscoso advanced to the final by beating 4th seed Andree Parrilla in two straight games, 15-10, 15-11, on Saturday. Waselenchuk needed three games to defeat IRT #2 Rodrigo Montoya, 15-14, 7-15, 11-2. He was down 14-11 in game one, but managed to come back and take it, which was crucial to Waselenchuk’s victory.

Waselenchuk sealed the win in spectacular fashion, as he hit a great serve that he thought was an ace, but a desperation dive by Montoya kept the ball in play. Yet Waselenchuk was able to recover and lunged out to re-kill the ball into the front right corner. He turned and fistpumped from his knees.

Despite that loss, Montoya will play in a final on Sunday, as he and Kurtis Cullen defeated Kadim Carrasco and Moscoso, 15-7, 15-10, in one of the doubles semi-finals. In the other, Parrilla and Adam Manilla beat Alan Natera and Andrés Acuña, 15-8, 15-2, so they’ll play Montoya and Cullen in the doubles final Sunday.

Collins, the 12th seed in singles, lost to veteran John Goth, 15-8, 14-15, 11-9. The left-hander then teamed up with Erick Trujillo as the 6th seeds in doubles, and they lost to 11th seeds Carlos Ramirez and Mauricio Zelada, 15-11, 15-3. He’ll be happy that February 29th only comes once every four years.

In the singles Round of 16, Goth will take on 5th seed Adam Manilla, who beat 28th seed Hector Barrios, 15-8, 15-4, on Thursday. Also in the doubles quarterfinals, Ramirez and Zelada will take on 3rd seeds Kurtis Cullen and Rodrigo Montoya, who needed a tie-breaker to defeat Miguel Angel Arteaga Guzman and Jonathan Flores, 15-9, 6-15, 11-3.

Those were the only upsets on Thursday in Minneapolis. IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso beat 32nd seed Sebastian Terrazas, 15-3, 15-3, and will play 16th seed Carlos Ramirez on Friday, as Ramirez defeated 17th seed Jim Douglas, 15-1, 15-1. Also, IRT #2 Montoya beat 31st seed Jaime Mansilla, 15-6, 15-5, but will surely face a stiffer test in the 16s Friday, when he’ll play 15th seed Sam Bredenbeck, who defeated 18th seed Rafael Gatica, 15-3, 15-2, on Thursday.

Of the matches that we highlighted in our preview, 6th seed Andrés Acuña played very well in defeating 27th seed Kurtis Cullen, 15-7, 15-4, and will need to be good again on Friday, when he faces former IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk, who crushed Diego Gatica, 15-0, 15-1, Thursday.

Elsewhere, 7th seed Alan Natera beat 26th seed Mauricio Zelada in two straight games, 15-11, 15-3, which we thought would be closer. However, the match between 10th seed Erick Trujillo and 23rd seed Edwin Galicia was close, as anticipated, with Trujillo coming back to win, 4-15, 15-13, 11-3.

Play continues Friday with the singles Round of 16 (at 10 & 11 AM) and quarterfinals (from 5 PM), with the semi-finals Saturday at 3 and 4 PM and the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles quarterfinals will be Friday at 2 PM with the semi-finals Saturday at 10 and 11 AM and the final Sunday at noon. Play begins Friday, and there are 20 players in the field, including 12 of the top 14 players, led by LPRT #1 Montserrat Mejia, #2 Maria Jose Vargas, who’s won three tournaments this season, and former #1 Paola Longoria in the #3 spot.

But perhaps the most interesting player in the draw is former LPRT #2 Fredérique Lambert, who hasn’t played an LPRT event since the 2019 US Open. Thus, the current Canadian champion is the lowest seed in the draw, which is likely unfortunate for Maria Paz Riquelme, who’ll face Lambert in the Round of 32, and LPRT #4 Brenda Laime, who’ll play the winner of that match in the Round of 16.

Lambert’s participation is likely due in part to play doubles with Juliette Parent, who is Canada’s #2 player, and that partnership may be one that could happen at this year’s International Racquetball Federation (IRF)World Championships in San Antonio. They will play Naomi Ros and Lexi York in the first round of doubles with the winner to face top seeds Alexandra Herrera and Mejia. In singles, Parent will face Stephanie Synhorst in the 32s with the winner going up against Vargas in the Round of 16.

Some of the interesting early round matches will be the 8/9 match between 8th seed Carla Muñoz and 9th seed Kelani Lawrence, as well as the 7/10 match between 7th seed Angelica Barrios and 10th seed Natalia Mendez. Also, the Mexican showdown between Alexandra Herrera and Jessica Parrilla and the battle of LPRT veterans between Samantha Salas and Cristina Amaya should be good.

The doubles draw has some interesting matches also. Fourth seeds Kelani Lawrence and Jessica Parrilla versus 5th seeds Angelica Barrios and Brenda Laime in the quarterfinals should be a gooder, and there could be a showdown between Argentina’s Mendez and Vargas and Mexico’s Paola Longoria and Samantha Salas in the semi-finals, although they both have to win a match to make that happen.

Play begins Friday morning at 9 AM with the singles Round of 32 followed by the Round of 16 Friday afternoon from 1 PM. The doubles Round of 16 begins at 11 AM Friday with the quarterfinals at 5 and 6 PM. The finals will be Sunday at 11 AM (singles) and noon (doubles). You can watch the action live from Massechusetts via the LPRT YouTube channel. All times Eastern.

The field of 32 includes 13 of the top 16 players, led by IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso, #2 Rodrigo Montoya and #3 Jake Bredenbeck.

One of the Round of 32 matches we’re looking forward is 6th seed Andrés Acuña versus 27th seed Kurtis Cullen, as those are two of the hardest hitters around. Cullen was runner up to Samuel Murray earlier this month at Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection Event, and will be part of Team Canada at next month’s Pan American Championships. They’ll play at 3 PM Thursday, and Acuña is the highest ranked player in that time slot, so it should be the match being live streamed at that time.

The winner of Acuña and Cullen will play the winner of Kane Waselenchuk and Diego Gatica, which will likely be the former IRT #1 Waselenchuk.

Two other matches to look for in the 32s are 7th seed Alan Natera versus 26th seed Mauricio Zelada, and 10th seed Erick Trujillo versus 23rd seed Edwin Galicia, and the winner of the those two matches will playoff in the Round of 16.

In doubles, Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla are the top seeds with Bolivians Kadim Carrasco and Moscoso 2nd seeds, and Cullen and Montoya 3rd seeds. Some of the interesting early doubles matches could be 4th seeds Acuña and Alan Natera against 5th seeds Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck, and Cullen and Montoya versus 6th seeds Robert Collins and Erick Trujillo, and the 7th seeded Guatemalans Edwin Galicia and Juan Salvatierra versus Carrasco and Moscoso, although most of those teams need to win a match to set up those matches.

Play begins Thursday with the Round of 32 from 3 PM, and the doubles Round of 16 at 7 and 8 PM Thursday. The singles Round of 16 (10 & 11 AM) and quarterfinals (from 5 PM) on Friday, with the semi-finals Saturday at 3 and 4 PM and the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles quarterfinals will be Friday at 2 PM with the semi-finals Saturday at 10 and 11 AM and the final Sunday at noon. That should mean they will be the lead players for Team USA at the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships in August, which will be played in San Antonio, Texas.

De La Rosa defeated Jake Bredenbeck, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5, in the Men’s Singles final. In the semi-finals, De La Rosa needed four games to get past Adam Manilla, 11-2, 11-3, 10-12, 11-9, while Bredenbeck took out Charlie Pratt in three straight games, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9. Pratt had the only upset of the quarterfinals, as he defeated 4th seed Thomas Carter, 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9.

De La Rosa’s win is his 2nd consecutive USAR Men’s Singles title. He also won Men’s Doubles last year with Alejandro Landa. Landa retired at the end of 2023, so De La Rosa teamed up with Sebastian Fernandez to successfully defend his doubles title by defeating brothers Jake and Sam Bredenbeck, 11-7, 11-3, 11-5.

In the semi-finals, De La Rosa and Fernandez defeated the two lefty team of Manilla and Robert Collins, 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, 11-7, while the Bredenbecks defeated Pratt and Tony Carson that was helped by winning an 18-16 game - one of the largest scores we’ve seen (gotta love win by two), making the final score line, 11-9, 18-16, 9-11, 11-9.

Scott won the Women’s Final, as defending champion Erika Manilla forfeited after Scott won the first game, 11-5. Manilla seemed to have a lower back injury, as she put her left hand on her back a few times during game one. Manilla also wasn’t moving as freely as she usually does.

The women’s semi-finals were a doubles partner playoff, as Scott defeated her doubles partner, Kelani Lawrence, 12-10, 11-13, 11-9, 11-4, in one semi-final, while Manilla needed a tie-breaker to get past her doubles partner, Michelle Key, 14-12, 9-11, 11-2, 5-11, 11-8.

The Women's Doubles final was a rematch of the last year’s final that Manilla and Key won. They won the opening game of the final this year, but Lawrence and Scott came back to win the next three games - each by two points - and take the title, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 15-13. There were five game points in game four: one for Manilla and Key and four for Lawrence and Scott.

In the semi-finals, Lawrence and Scott beat Shane Diaz and Annie Roberts, 11-7, 12-14, 11-2, 11-9, while Manilla and Key defeated Naomi Ros and Lexi York, 11-5, 11-5, 12-14, 11-4.

The biggest upset of the championships happened in Mixed Doubles, as 4th seeds Thomas Carter and Kelani Lawrence knocked off the defending champions - and 2023 Pan American Games gold medalists - Adam Manilla and Erika Manilla, 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4, in the semi-finals.

However, Carter and Lawrence couldn’t finish the deal, as they lost in the final to De La Rosa and Scott, 11-4, 13-11, 11-5. De La Rosa and Scott were runners-up last year to the Manillas. They almost didn’t get to the final, as they needed five games to defeat Jake Bredenbeck and Michelle Key, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8.

He defeated Jaime Martell, 15-2, 15-7, in what was an all Mexican final. In the semi-finals, Cardona beat Canadian Coby Iwaasa, 15-6, 15-4, while Martell got a win over Mauricio Zelada by forfeit.

Upcoming events

Next month sees the 2024 USA Racquetball National Indoor Championships at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, February 7-11. There’s also Racquetball Canada’s 2nd National Team Selection Event of the season in Sherwood Park, Alberta, February 9-10.

The next International Racquetball Tour event will be the McNamara Hall of Fame event in Minneapolis, February 29-March 3. The next Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour event is the Boston Open, March 1-3, in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Looking ahead, we understand that the XXXV Pan American Championships will be in Guatemala City, as they were last year, from March 23-30, 2024. Also, the 2024 International Racquetball Federation World Championships will be in San Antonio, Texas, August 23-31.

That’ll be the first time Worlds have been in the USA since 1996, when they were in Phoenix. That year the USA made a clean sweep of the gold medals. Todd O’Neil won Men’s Singles and Michelle Gould won Women’s Singles. The doubles titles went to Adam Karp and Bill Sell on the men’s side and sisters Joy MacKenzie and Jackie Paraiso on the women’s side.

It’s difficult to imagine the USA - or any country really (maybe Mexico?) - sweeping gold this year.

It’s Murray’s 2nd IRT title, and comes a little over three years since his first in January 2021. Murray won each of his last four matches - from the Round of 16 on - in a tie-breaker. Moreover, only in the final did he win the first game of the match.

Montoya was also in the doubles final, which went to a breaker as well. Andree Parrilla and Eduardo Portillo, the 3rd seeds, came back to defeat #1 seeds Montoya and Javier Mar, 12-15, 15-14, 11-8. It’s Parrilla’s 5th IRT doubles title with a 4th different partner, but just the second title for Portillo.

Murray certainly didn’t win the singles title the easy way, as he was down 5-0 and 7-2 in game one. But Murray showed great resilience during the tournament and again on Sunday. He came back in game one to level the game at 8-8.

Murray and Montoya were back and forth from there, including being tied at 12-12, but Murray never trailed after catching up to Montoya. They ended the game on a long rally that Murray finished by diving forward and hitting a forehand pinch shot.

Montoya seemed to injury his right knee during the last rally of game one, as he dove to keep the ball in play, and one feared that might do him in. But he came back out for game two, and took another early lead at 4-0.

Montoya stayed in front throughout game two. Murray made it close late, getting within two at 10-8, but Montoya closed it out from there to win 15-9, and force a tie-breaker.

In the breaker, Murray went out to a 6-0 lead, causing Montoya to call a timeout. Murray also won the ensuing rally to make it 7-0. After that rally Montoya took the ball and smashed it to the front wall in a clear sign of frustration.

Nonetheless, Montoya won the next rally with a backhand shot, and then scored his first point with another backhand winner. He slowly got back into the game, getting within three at 7-4 and 8-5.

But Murray got to match point with two good serves. The first was a drive serve ace to the right side that made it 9-5, and the second was a drive Z serve to the right side that Montoya tried to return with a side-side front shot that came shot making the score 10-5.

A Montoya forehand wide angle shot fended off Murray's first match point. He followed that up with points on the next two rallies to make it 10-7. They exchanged two side outs each, as Murray’s second and third match points went by. On the second, he double faulted with a short drive serve to the right side.

Montoya scored another point with a forehand winner making the score 10-8, and also making any Murray fans nervous. But Murray got the serve right back for his fourth match point. He hit a drive jam serve to the left that came off the back wall, so Montoya hit a great forehand pinch to the front right corner.

Two winning forehand shots made it 10-10, so Montoya was serving for the match. Not a problem for Murray, who hit a winning forehand cross court shot to get the serve right back.

The fifth time was the charm for Murray Sunday, as he made good when Montoya hit a loose backhand and then didn’t clear out of Murray’s way, leading to an avoidable hinder call by the referee. Montoya - who had questioned calls throughout the match - was clearly upset by the call, and despite having used his two timeouts was allowed to appeal the call, as it was match point. The line judges upheld the avoidable call, ending the game at 11-10 and match 2-1 for Murray.

Not only was this Murray's first title since he won in 2021, it's his first final since then and just his third final overall. Thus, at 2 wins in 3 finals, he has a winning record in finals.

Doubles

The doubles final took awhile to really get going. After 28 rallies, the score was just 2-2. But then Mar and Montoya scored 7 points on as many rallies, making it 9-2.

Parrilla and Portillo then got the serve back, as Parrilla made a great backhand reverse pinch shot. They got five straight points to close the score to 9-7.

Mar and Montoya extended their lead to six at 13-7 on four straight rallies. That stopped as Montoya - playing the left side - skipped a backhand. Parrilla and Portillo responded with five points of their own to get within one at 13-12.

Parrilla, playing on the right side, made back to back errors, skipping a backhand cross court shot to give up the serve, and then a forehand shot that put Mar and Montoya on game point at 14-12. He held off that game point with a backhand winner in the front court, but then Mar also hit a backhand front court winner to close out the game 15-12.

Mar and Montoya went out to a 7-0 lead in game two on as many rallies, and then extended that lead to 10-1. But this has been the tournament where no lead was safe, and so it proved to be again in this game, as Parrilla and Portillo cut the lead in half at 10-5, and then got within one at 12-11.

However, Mar and Montoya got the serve back, as Portillo skipped a backhand shot. Montoya made it 13-11 with a backhand winner, and they got to match point at 14-11, as Parrilla skipped a backhand pinch shot. Portillo denied them that match point with a forehand reverse pinch shot that got his side back in the service box.

They tied the score at 14-14 as Parrilla hit two winning pinch shots, and Mar skipped a shot. But a Montoya pinch shot denied Parrilla and Portillo their first game point, and gave his side another match point opportunity.

However, he skipped a shot on that first opportunity, and on the second Parrilla hit another winner: a forehand down the right side that put his side back in the service box. Portillo closed out the game on the next rally, as he hit a forehand down the left side.

In a tournament of tie-breakers, why not have one more?

Parrilla and Portillo led early in the breaker, at 4-1 and 6-2. But Mar and Montoya caught up at 6-6 and went ahead 8-6, so Parrilla and Portillo called a timeout. When play resumed, Parrilla hit a pinch shot winner to get his side back in to serve.

Then Eduardo Portillo happened. He hit winners on the next five rallies to win the game for his side, 11-8, and the match, 2-1.

This was the tournament of tie-breakers, as from the quarterfinals on in singles and doubles, 10 of the 13 matches (not counting the injury forfeit) went breaker. Montoya advanced to the final after Kane Waselenchuk forfeited due to an injury he picked up during his quarterfinal win over Andrés Acuña. Murray’s route to the final was more difficult, as he came back to defeat Conrrado Moscoso, 13-15, 15-14, 11-2.

In an interview prior to the Murray and Montoya match, Waselenchuk said that he didn't think his injury was serious, but also didn't want to push it, especially as he's just recently returned to full fitness following the achilles injury that sidelined him for about a year.

Early on in the Moscoso-Murray semi-final, it seemed that Murray, the 7th seed, might have an easy time of it, as he was up 9-1 in game one against Moscoso, the 3rd seed. However, Moscoso caught up to Murray at 13-13, and then closed it out to win game one 15-13.

Moscoso carried that momentum over into game two, as he went up 6-0, 8-3 and then 14-3, at which point it seemed that was match over.

But Murray doesn’t quit.

He came all the way back to pull the game out of the fire, when it was almost completely burnt. Murray did it with some great serving. He hit drive serves to the left that cracked off the side wall just past the short line. If they were short, he hit some hard Z serves to the right side that were deep and difficult for Moscoso to return.

Thus, the match went to a tie-breaker, and as we’ve pointed out before, when the first two games are close - like 15-13, 15-14 - then the tie-breaker is often not close. So it proved to be today.

Moscoso served first, and got the first two points. But then it was all Murray, as he scored 11 unanswered points.

Moscoso called a timeout when he was down 7-2, but to no avail. Murray got to match point as he hit a strong forehand down the right side that Moscoso tried to return with a side-side front shot that fell short.

Murray’s first match point went by as he skipped a backhand pinch shot from deep in the court. But Murray got the serve right back with a backhand re-kill off a Moscoso forehand pinch shot on the next rally.

The winner came as Murray hit a drive serve to the left side that came off the side wall early, so Moscoso hit a ceiling ball that allowed Murray a chance to drive the ball down the right side. Moscoso then tried to hit a forehand reverse which skipped.

With the match over, Murray made little reaction, perhaps he - like The Racquetball Blog staff - couldn’t quite believe that he’d come back from so far down.

Although Murray was down 14-3 in game two, he only faced three match points in coming back to win that game and force the tie-breaker.

Doubles

The doubles final will be a Mexican showdown, when the top seeds Javier Mar and Montoya take on 3rd seeds Andree Parrilla and Eduardo Portillo. Both teams needed three games to advance to the final.

Mar and Montoya came back from a game down to defeat 4th seeds Kadim Carrasco and Moscoso, 13-15, 15-6, 11-8, while Parrilla and Portillo held on to defeat 7th seeds Alvaro Beltran and Adam Manilla, 15-13, 12-15, 11-3.

The singles final will be Sunday at 11 with the doubles final at noon, or following the singles final. Moscoso will play veteran Canadian Samuel Murray, in the semi-finals on Saturday, as Murray came back to defeat young Mexican Erick Trujillo, 10-15, 15-13, 11-4, in the second quarterfinal Friday.

In the other quarterfinals, former #1 Kane Waselenchuk came back from a game down to defeat 8th seed Andrés Acuña, 13-15, 15-10, 11-4, and 4th seed Rodrigo Montoya did likewise to fend off 5th seed Andree Parrilla, 12-15, 15-9, 11-9.

Doubles

The top seeds in doubles - Javier Mar and Rodrigo Montoya - beat 8th seeds Robert Collins and Erick Trujillo in two straight games, 15-10, 15-2. But the 2nd seeds, Daniel De La Rosa and Alejandro Landa, lost a contentious tie-breaker to Alvaro Beltran and Adam Manilla, 11-15, 15-14, 11-9.

Beltran and Manilla eked out the second game to force a tie-breaker. They got up 3-0 in the breaker, only to see De La Rosa and Landa get 10 unanswered points to reach match point at 10-3.

Cue the comeback.

Beltran and Manilla prevented De La Rosa and Landa from scoring four times, and slowly worked their way back into the game. Landa skipped a shot that made it 10-10, and Beltran mockingly applauded him.

Landa did not take that well, and went toe to toe with Beltran. They had been talking throughout the match, and both had done things that could have resulted in technical faults, yet none had been called, though they would have been in an international match, which is less tolerant of bad behaviour.

There was a bit of physical contact between the two, and a lot of jawing as they went nose to nose a few times before play resumed. At one point, the IRT Commissioner came on the court to try to calm things down, although he separated them, they came together a couple more times before play resumed.

The referee assessed technicals - finally! - to both sides, so the score went from 10-10 to 9-9, with Beltran (the first server for his side) serving. After a hinder, Beltran hit winning shots on back to back rallies that made it 10-9 and then 11-9, to win the game and match for his team. Landa left the court without shaking hands.

Fourth seeds Kadim Carrasco and Conrrado Moscoso also won a close tie-breaker, as they defeated 5th seeds Andrés Acuña and Alan Natera, 10-15, 15-7, 11-10. They’ll play 3rd seeds Andree Parrilla and Eduardo Portillo in the semi-finals Saturday, as Parrilla and Portillo beat 6th seeds Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck, 15-5, 15-5.

The singles semi-finals Saturday at 4 and 5 PM and the final Sunday at 11. The doubles semis will be Saturday at 11 AM and noon, and final at noon on Sunday. But that was in the 16/17 match, and it was former #1 Kane Waselenchuk, seeded 17th, defeating 16th seed Sam Bredenbeck, 15-10, 15-10. Bredenbeck actually led early in both games, but wasn’t able to close out either of them against the IRT’s career wins title holder.

Current #1 Daniel De La Rosa needed a tie-breaker to defeat Coby Iwaasa, winning 15-11, 14-15, 11-8, which sets up the anticipated showdown between De La Rosa and Waselenchuk in the Round of 16 Friday morning.

IRT #2 Jake Bredenbeck beat young Canadian Christian Pocsai, 15-5, 15-5, Thursday, and will play 15th seed Erick Trujillo Friday, as Trujillo defeated 18th seed Javier Mar, 15-12, 15-13, in the 16s.

In doubles, top seeds Mar and Rodrigo Montoya will play 8th seeds Robert Collins and Trujillo, who came back from a game down to defeat 9th seeds Iwaasa and Samuel Murray, 9-15, 15-10, 11-6. Second seeds De La Rosa and Alejandro Landa will face the righty-lefty team of veteran Alvaro Beltran and Adam Manilla in the quarterfinals, as Beltran and Manilla, the 7th seeds, beat 10th seeds Diego Gastelum and Cole Sendrey, 15-11, 15-6, Thursday.

The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will be Friday with the semi-finals Saturday at 4 and 5 PM and the final Sunday at 11. The top 5 IRT players are in the field led by IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa, as well as #2 Jake Bredenbeck and #3 Conrrado Moscoso.

We’d like to tell you which of the top players past the top 5 are there, but the IRT website is inaccessible at the current time (Wednesday night), so we're not sure what the rankings are past the top 5 (posted on Facebook this week). Why the IRT website is inaccessible is a mystery, and not a good situation.

There are some interesting early round matches to anticipate with nothing bigger than a showdown between current #1 De La Rosa and former #1 Kane Waselenchuk, which could happen in the Round of 16. De La Rosa would need to get by Coby Iwaasa and Waselenchuk by Sam Bredenbeck in the 32s for that to happen.

IRT #2 Jake Bredenbeck will also potentially face a tricky match in the 16s, as he’ll play the winner of 15th seed Erick Trujillo - a former World Junior Champion - and 18th seed Javier Mar, who’s been an IRT finalist.

The two top seeds in doubles could also face tricky first matches. Top seeds Mar and Rodrigo Montoya will play the winner of 8th seeds Robert Collins and Erick Trujillo and 9th seeds Coby Iwaasa and Samuel Murray in the quarterfinals. Mar and Montoya played Iwaasa and Murray twice at the Pan American Games last year in Santiago, Chile, where they split two matches. Mar and Montoya won the Men’s Doubles final, but when they played in the semi-finals of the Men's Team competition, Iwaasa and Murray won. If they play in Sioux Falls it could go either way.

The 2nd seeds De La Rosa and Alejandro Landa could face the righty-lefty team of veteran Alvaro Beltran and Adam Manilla in the quarters, which will be a good match for the spectators, but a tough one for the players. Beltran and Manilla, the 7th seeds, need to get past 10th seeds Diego Gastelum and Cole Sendrey to set up the match with De La Rosa and Landa.

Play begins Thursday with three matches in the Round of 64 at 1 PM. The Round of 32 will be played Thursday from 3 PM on. The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will be Friday with the semi-finals Saturday at 4 and 5 PM and the final Sunday at 11. The doubles matches begin Thursday at 8 PM with the final Sunday at noon.
