Muñoz wins Women's Open, Mejia making history & what's next

Carla Muñoz won Women’s Open on the weekend at the TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam in Overland Park, Kansas. And she did so by defeating both top seeds. Muñoz, the 3rd seed, beat top seed Angelica Barrios, 15-12, 15-7, in the final, to take the title.

In the semi-finals, she defeated 2nd seed Valeria Centellas, 15-11, 15-13. In the other semi, Barrios needed a tie-breaker to defeated veteran Nancy Enriquez, 12-15, 15-10, 11-6.

The win netted Muñoz a decent amount of prize money, as Women’s Open had a $6000 purse. That purse would be Tier 2 or 3 level on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT). Overall, the TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam had a $60,000 purse due to the TeamRoot.com sponsorship, which easily makes it the largest purse on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT).

Mejia makes history

Monterrat Mejia, who won the both singles and doubles (with Alexandra Herrera) Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) events at the TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam, took home over $11,000 of the purse ($9450 in singles & $1800 for her share of doubles). We believe that’s more than any US Open winner.

As we mentioned yesterday, Mejia is the 28th woman to win a women’s pro racquetball tour event, now known as the LPRT but under several names in the past. She’s the first new winner in almost five years, and first since Frédérique Lambert in August 2016 in Georgia. Mejia (at 21 years 199 days) is the 7th youngest player to win an pro event, but 2nd youngest since 2000 after Paola Longoria, who won when she was 18 (and 42 days).

Next events

The International Racquetball Federation (LPRT) announced tournament dates for the rest of this year on the weekend.

First up will be the 33rd Pan American Championships in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, September 3-11. That will be followed by the 30th IRF World Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, October 29-November 6. Finally, the 32nd IRF World Junior Championships will be in San José, Costa Rica, December 3-11.

Of course, this is likely all dependent on COVID numbers being under control, but it gives players (and fans) events to look forward to.

As for the pro tours, the next event will be a combined Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) and International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event, when they play at the World Singles and Doubles Open Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado August 11-14.

Yes, they’re calling a World Championships. No, it’s not an IRF event, so not really a World Championship, but so it goes.

Until the next events, you can watch some of what’s already happened, and there are several matches worth watching from the weekend’s LPRT TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam, not least of which was the Mejia-Longoria final, and you can watch them via the LPRT YouTube channel.

Mejia wins singles and doubles at 2021 LPRT TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam

Montserrat Mejia got the biggest win of her young career Sunday, as she won the 2021 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) TeamRoot.com Super Max Slam in Overland Park, Kansas by defeating Paola Longoria, the LPRT’s #1 player, 15-10, 15-12. Mejia was seeded 10th, but defeated LPRT #2 and current International Racquetball Federation World Champion Gabriela Martinez en route to the final versus Longoria.

Mejia followed up the singles win by winning the doubles final with Alexandra Herrera. They beat Gabriela Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez, 15-1, 15-14.

Game one of the singles final was close early, as Mejia and Longoria traded points up to 7-7. Then Mejia eked ahead to lead 12-7. Longoria got three points to cut the lead to two at 12-10.

But she would get no more, as Mejia was able to close it out, 15-10. Credit Longoria for fighting off two game points, but two Mejia backhand winners prevented Longoria scoring. Mejia finished the game with a forehand pinch winner.

As tightly contested as game one was, game two was even more so. Ten rallies and it was 3-2 for Longoria. Ten more and it was 4-3 Longoria. Another ten only added one more point that made it 5-3 Longoria.

After 50 rallies, Longoria still led, but just by one at 8-7. It was the last time she’d hold the lead, as Mejia scored the next three points to lead 10-8. After 60 rallies, she was ahead 12-9, getting her 12th point with a drive serve ace to the left side.

Again, Longoria was not going to go quietly, and she came back to tie the game 12-12, as they played some long rallies, testing each other’s patience with ceiling balls back and forth. Mejia took a timeout at that point.

When play resumed, there was another long rally that ended when Longoria skipped a shot. Mejia broke the tie on the next rally with a flat forehand from deep in the court on what was the 70th rally of the game.

She then put herself on match point with a forehand winner. Mejia hit a Z serve to the right that was an ace to close out the game and match.

The win makes Mejia the 28th woman to win a women’s pro event in the history of the tour. She’s the third Mexican to win on tour after Longoria and Samantha Salas. Her one win puts her 100 behind Longoria, but then Mejia is ten years younger than Longoria, so she has some time to close that gap.

The doubles final began as a lopsided affair with Herrera and Mejia dominating game one, 15-1, and taking a 10-1 lead in game two on Martinez and Rodriguez, who weren’t playing like the team that had upset top seeds Longoria and Salas in the semi-finals on Saturday.

But then things changed, as Martinez and Rodriguez got a sideout at 10-1. Rodriguez then served a drive jam serve to the left side, so that it came in between Herrera and Mejia, who are a lefty-righty team (respectively). Rodriguez’s first serve like that went for an ace, as neither of her opponents moved to play the ball.

Six points on as many rallies made the score 10-8. They got one more that got them within one at 10-9 before surrendering serve after an avoidable hinder on Martinez.

Herrera and Mejia got three points to lead 13-9. But after a Rodriguez forehand reverse pinch got her side the serve back, she and Martinez matched those points to again trail by just one at 13-12.

Then the serve switched back to Herrera and Mejia after Martinez skipped a forehand. Mejia hit a drive serve ace to the right side to reach match point at 14-12. But after Martinez and Rodriguez took a timeout, a Martinez backhand winner denied them the match, and got her side into the service box.

Martinez got her side to match point with a forehand from left to right. But the lefty Herrera hit a backhand from the middle of the court to the right side for a winner that gave her side the serve back.

Another Martinez backhand winner held off Herrera and Mejia’s 2nd match point. On the third, Mejia hit a half lob to right on second serve that Rodriguez tried to take early and aggressively, but hit it into the floor. It was a sad end to what was a really good game.

The win is Herrera and Mejia’s 3rd LPRT doubles title together, and the first since their 2019 US Open victory. Overall, Mejia now has four doubles titles on tour, while Herrera has 11. Also, they remain unbeaten against Martinez and Rodriguez across four LPRT matches.

The next LPRT event indoors will be the World Singles and Doubles Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado August 11-14. But before then they’ll play outdoors at the World Outdoor Racquetball Outdoor National Championships in Huntington Beach, California, July 8-11.

If you missed any of the action from the LPRT TeamRoot.com - and there were plenty of good matches to watch including the Sunday’s two finals, you can watch them via the LPRT YouTube channel or the LPRT website (click “LPRT Live” at the top of the page).

Longoria & Mejia into final at 2021 LPRT TeamRoot.com

Paola Longoria, the #1 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT), will play 10th seed Montserrat Mejia in the final of the 2021 LPRT TeamRoot.com tournament in Overland Park, Kansas on Sunday. In Saturday’s semi-finals, Longoria defeated her long time doubles partner Samantha Salas, the 5th seed, 15-7, 15-6, while Montserrat beat 14th seed Gabriela Martinez, 15-8, 15-6.

Both semis were tightly contested, and the scores don’t reflect how hard fought they were. In game one of their match, Longoria got out to a 6-0 lead, which was the difference, as she and Salas were pretty even after that.

In their second game, Salas took the early lead at 4-0. Then they were back and forth until Longoria led 7-5, but from there she won 8 of the next 9 points.

Martinez was the better starter in both games against Mejia, but as some like to say “it’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.” And Mejia finished better in both games, as she came back from 4-1 down in game one, and 7-2 down in game two, to win each game by comfortable margins.

While there weren’t upsets in the singles semi-finals, both doubles semis were won by the lower seeded team. Most significantly, 4th seeds Gabriela Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez knocked off top seeds Longoria and Salas, 15-11, 15-9, in semi, while Alexandra Herrera and Mejia defeated 2nd seeds Valeria Centellas and Natalia Mendez, 15-11, 15-9.

The loss by Longoria and Salas marks the first time they won’t be in a LPRT final (when playing together) since May 2017, when they were beaten in the semis by Herrera and Mejia in Guadalajara. And it’s just the third time Longoria and Salas have lost in a LPRT semi. The first came in Monterrey 2015, when Sheryl Lotts and Rhonda Rajsich beat them and won the final.

How did Martinez and Rodriguez cause the upset? They shot the ball really well. Also, Rodriguez used a straight lob serve to Salas to good effect.

Still, you had the sense that Longoria and Salas would find a way. They were down 8-4 in game one, but scored the next seven points to lead 11-8. However, Martinez and Rodriguez got the serve back then and got seven points without yielding the serve.

In game two, they were tied at 5-5, when Martinez and Rodriguez ran out seven straight points to lead 12-5. But Longoria and Salas got a sideout at that point, and started scoring points, and you thought “oh, they go; this will be a breaker.”

Longoria and Salas got the deficit down to four at 12-8, so Martinez and Rodriguez called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Longoria and Salas got another point, making it 12-9. But on the next rally Martinez flat rolled a backhand shot to get her side back in the service box.

They never left it, getting three points with a great Rodriguez forehand, another Martinez backhand winner and then - after a Salas serve return put them half down - Martinez cracked out a drive serve ace to end it.

Collectively, Martinez and Rodriguez have been in five LPRT doubles finals: Martinez three times and Rodriguez twice. But they’ve never been in a final together, although they have a great deal of experience playing together internationally for Guatemala.

The other semi-final was more straight forward, although in game one it looked like Centellas and Mendez were going to carry the day, as they were up 10-7 and 11-9. But Herrera and Mejia turned it around, and won the last six points to win game one, 15-9.

Then in game two, Herrera and Mejia led most of the way, taking leads of 10-4 and 14-5. Centellas and Mendez got four points before succumbing, and losing 15-9.

Sunday’s final will be the fourth time Herrera and Mejia play Martinez and Rodriguez on the LPRT. Herrera and Mejia have won the previous three meetings.

You can watch the LPRT TeamRoot.com event live via the LPRT YouTube channel or the LPRT website (click “LPRT Live” at the top of the page). The singles final will be 1 PM Sunday with the doubles final to follow at 2 PM. All times central.

2021 LPRT TeamRoot.com Preview

”I’ve a feeling we’re back in Kansas,” is something the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) players could be thinking this weekend, as they gather for the 2021 TeamRoot.com tournament in Overland Park, Kansas that begins on Friday. LPRT #1 Paola Longoria leads a field of 36 players that includes the top 21 LPRT players competing for one of the richest purses in racquetball, due to the generous sponsorship of TeamRoot.com.

The action begins early Friday with four matches at 8 PM in a Round of 64, including an all American match between Erika Manilla and Michelle De La Rosa with the winner to play #2 seed Alexandra Herrera. Longoria will face the winner of Montserrat Perez and Linda Tyler.

Four other notable early matches are Adriana Riveros versus Maria Renee Rodriguez in the 16/17 match, as well as Carla Muñoz versus Masiel Rivera, Gabriela Martinez versus Hollie Scott and another all USA battle between Kelani Lawrence and Sheryl Lotts.

Longoria and Samantha Salas are the top seeds in the doubles draw with Valeria Centellas and Natalia Mendez 2nd seeds. Centellas and Mendez will want to do better in Kansas than they did last month in Greenville, South Carolina, where they lost in the quarterfinals to Kelani Lawrence and Hollie Scott. Lawrence and Scott are seeded 9th this weekend, so there will only be a rematch if both teams make the final.

You can watch the LPRT TeamRoot.com event live via the LPRT YouTube channel or the LPRT website (click “LPRT Live” at the top of the page). The Round of 64 begins at 8 AM Friday, with the Round of 32 kicking off at 9 AM. The quarterfinals will be 10 and 11 AM Saturday. Doubles begins at 7 and 8 PM Friday with the Round of 16 followed by the quarterfinals at noon and 1 PM Saturday. The singles semi-finals are Saturday at 5 and 6 PM and the doubles semis at 7 and 8 PM. The singles final will be 1 PM Sunday with the doubles final to follow at 2 PM. All times central.
