Natera & Trujillo win at 43rd Annual Lewis Drug Pro-Am

Alan Natera won Men’s Open Sunday at the 43rd Annual Lewis Drug Pro-Am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he defeated Gerson Miranda Martinez, 11-15, 15-4, 11-6, in the final. In the semi-finals, Natera, who was the top seed, defeated 5th seed Lee Connell, 15-11, 11-15, 11-3, while 3rd seed Miranda Martinez upset 2nd seed Jordan Barth, 15-11, 15-8.

There was also an International Racquetball Tour (IRT) U21 division in Sioux Falls, as the Lewis Drug Pro-Am was an IRT event. There were four players in the U21 division, so it was a round robin competition.

Erick Trujillo won the U21 division going undefeated against the other three players without losing a game. Curiously, Trujillo’s closest match was against Benjamin Horner, an American teen-ager who finished 4th without winning a game. But Horner’s two games versus Trujillo were close with Trujillo winning 15-11, 15-13.

Why are there U21 divisions?

The IRT introduced U21 divisions last year, as a result of the International Racquetball Federation (IRF) including U21 in their World Junior Championships. The IRF was concerned about players getting to the end of their junior eligibility (previously the oldest division at World Juniors was U18) and quitting racquetball, when they could still develop into good players.

That’s a real concern, and not isolated to racquetball. Players in other sports will quit once they get beyond their teenage years or junior years, because their lives change significantly from being kids at home to becoming adults away from home. Things that were once priorities - like the sports they played - can fall by the wayside as other things - school, work, etc. - take priority.

But the dream of any athlete should be to play for their country. The IRF has extended the possibility of fulfilling that dream for another three years at the World Junior level by introducing the U21 division. This is a good move, because racquetball has grown internationally through international competitions. The IRF got racquetball included in the Pan American Games - the highest level of international competition outside of the Olympics - and that trickles down to smaller international competitions, like the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Countries want to compete in those games, so they develop sport programs to do so. That’s why we’ve seen the development of so many elite racquetball players outside of the United States, where racquetball originated.

Do the pro tours need U21 divisions?

While a U21 division at the IRF World Junior Championships makes a lot of sense, U21 divisions on the pro tours make little sense. The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) seems to get this, as they have not had U21 divisions in their events this season with the exception of the US Open. Having a U21 LPRT division at the US Open may have been decided by USA Racquetball, as they would have wanted to have equal opportunity for both men and women, so if there was to be an IRT U21 division, then there should be a LPRT U21 division.

The U21 IRT draws are often small, usually fewer than ten players. Going to World Juniors, a weeklong event where you are representing your country and you can be assured that there will be a good field of players, is one thing, but going somewhere for a weekend tournament, which will likely have a small field of players, is another thing.

We believe that the IRT introduced U21 - with some prize money - as a means to help younger players pay for expenses to compete on tour. But we’d prefer the prize money from a U21 division to go into the Open division, and have the open division pay out for semi-finals as well as the finalists.

For example, the New York Open last year had $500 for first and $250 for second in U21, while Open was $600 for first and $400 for second ($1750 over both divisions). We think it would be better to have it all in Open with $750 for first, $500 second, and $250 for each semi-finalist.

Having younger players in Open means that they are could play “wily veterans.” Wily vets have been around awhile, seen a few things, have a few tricks up their sleeves, and are happy to school a young’un on the court. That schooling would be more useful to a young developing player than playing another kid of a similar age.

The young players may beat the wily veterans, and that’s great. In the long run, the young players should beat the wily veterans, because time is on the side of the young players, and they should use that time to develop skills to beat the wily vets. One way to develop those skills is by playing experienced players, i.e. the wily veterans.

Upcoming events

While the pro tours are off until late February, the focus next weekend will be on national events. USA Racquetball is having its 2023 National Doubles and National Singles Championships in Tempe, Arizona, February 1-5.

Also, Racquetball Canada will hold its second National Team Selection Event of the season February 3rd and 4th in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and Mexico’s Campeonato Nacional Selectivo 2023 will be in Juarez, Mexico, February 1-5.

Mosoco wins singles, De La Rosa & Mar doubles at 43rd Annual Lewis Drug IRT Pro-Am

Conrrado Moscoso confirmed his place as the #1 player on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Sunday by winning the 43rd Annual Lewis Drug IRT Pro-Am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he defeated IRT #2 Daniel De La Rosa, 15-9, 15-12. De La Rosa got a measure of revenge in the doubles final, as he and Javier Mar beat Moscoso and Alejandro Landa, 15-14, 15-10. With that win, Mar will become the #1 doubles player on the IRT.

Question for those who thought Moscoso should not have become #1 after the last IRT event, as he lost to De La Rosa in that final, and De La Rosa was then the #1 player: Are you beginning to believe?

Game one of the singles final was streaky. De La Rosa was up 2-0. Then Moscoso was up 5-2. De La Rosa came back to lead 8-5, and then Moscoso tied it at 9-9. From there he scored six unanswered points to win 15-9.

Moscoso served big in game one, hitting several drive serve aces to the left side - De La Rosa’s backhand. If they weren’t aces, often his drive serve led to a weak return, so he could win it with the third shot of the rally.

Moscoso led all the way in game two, although De La Rosa did get within two points a few times, including at 14-12, after he had fought off four Moscoso match points. But De La Rosa skipped a forehand shot then, which gave the serve back to Moscoso, who called a timeout.

When play resumed, Moscoso hit another drive serve to the left side, which came off the side wall, and while De La Rosa was able to return it his shot wasn’t strong. The return also came off the left side wall, and Moscoso was able to hit a backhand cross court kill shot to win the match.

He dropped to his knees and yelling in joy after hitting the match winner. Afterwards, Moscoso said “I’m very happy. I’m very happy for the championship.”

It looked like Moscoso would be a double winner Sunday, as he and Landa led for most of game one of the doubles final, including at 14-11. However, De La Rosa fought off that game point with a backhand cross court winner to get his side the serve back. After a timeout, he and Mar proceeded to win four straight points, with three of them off Moscoso skips.

But the game winner wasn’t a skip, as Moscoso smashed a backhand return cross court only to see Mar get low to hit a forehand reverse pinch to the left front corner for the game winner.

Throughout game one, De La Rosa hit a lob serves to Moscoso, which was an effective strategy, and we wonder if he wishes he’d done more of that in the singles final. Doubles strategy is somewhat different than in singles, but hitting power serves to power players, like Moscoso, can be playing into their strength.

They were close early in game two, but after being tied 5-5, De La Rosa and Mar opened up leads of 8-5 and 11-6, which put the writing on the wall. Moscoso and Landa did get within one at 11-10, but Moscoso then skipped shots on consecutive rallies to give up the serve.

They never regained it, as De La Rosa and Mar won four straight rallies to take game two, 15-10. De La Rosa closed it out with a forehand rekill off a Moscoso backhand cross court shot.

De La Rosa and Mar hadn’t played together before, but neither of their usual partners - Alvaro Beltran and Rodrigo Montoya, respectively - were in Sioux Falls, so they teamed up. Their success is partly due to their skill at re-killing shots, which Montoya and Beltran are also good at.

Players rekill opponents’ shots when they hit the ball back in for a winner. This is usually done from a front court position, and generally players are not taking a full swing at the ball. Rather they are bumping, or even blocking, the ball back to the front wall or into one of the corners. Part of its effectiveness comes from the difficulty in opponents anticipating the rekill.

The next IRT event will be the Suivant Consulting Pro-Am, February 16-19 in Lilburn, Georgia. If you missed Sunday’s finals, or any of the play from Sioux Falls, check out the IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page.

Moscoso & De La Rosa to face off twice Sunday at 43rd Annual Lewis Drug IRT Pro-Am

Conrrado Moscoso and Daniel De La Rosa, the #1 and #2 players, respectively on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) will play in both finals Sunday at the 43rd Annual Lewis Drug IRT Pro-Am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as they won their respective semi-final matches in both singles and doubles. Sunday’s singles final will be second consecutive final for both. Last month, De La Rosa defeated Moscoso at the Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas in what was a great final, so hopefully tomorrow’s will also be great.

They are separating themselves from the rest of the IRT field.

In the singles semi-finals, Moscoso defeated IRT #4 Eduardo Portillo, 15-10, 15-8, and De La Rosa beat #6 Jake Bredenbeck, 15-13, 15-8. In the doubles semis, De La Rosa and Javier Mar are the top seeds, and they defeated 4th seeds Bredenbeck and his brother Sam Bredenbeck, 15-11, 15-12. Moscoso and Alejandro Landa are the second seeds, and they were almost pushed to a tie-breaker by 3rd seeds Andrés Acuña and Portillo, 15-2, 15-14.

Acuña and Portillo led 13-10 late in game two, and looked liked they were going to force game three against Moscoso and Landa. But it was not to be, as Moscoso and Landa came back with four straight points to lead 14-13.

But their first match point was denied, as Landa was forced into skipping a shot from the front court. An Acuña backhand pinch shot from the front court got his side on game point at 14-14, but on the next rally, he tried to hit a cross court shot that only went into the middle of the court, where it hit Portillo. Side out.

Acuña partially redeemed himself with a forehand pinch shot winner to deny Moscoso and Landa their second match point. However, on the next rally Moscoso ended the match with a wide angle backhand winner that made it 15-14.

You can watch the finals Sunday via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The singles final will be 11 AM Central time Sunday with the doubles final to follow that.

47th Annual Lewis Drug IRT Pro-Am - Preview

The second International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event of 2023 starts today in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the 43rd Annual Lewis Drug Pro-Am takes place. Thirty players are in Sioux Falls, led by the new IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso. IRT #2 Daniel De La Rosa won the 1st event of the season - the Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas - two weeks ago, when he beat Moscoso in the final, which was a great match.

When Moscoso was announced as the new #1 in the week following the Longhorn, some people freaked out, as De La Rosa had been #1 and beat Moscoso in Austin, so some were baffled how Moscoso could go ahead of De La Rosa. But rankings are done on a revolving 12 month basis, and Moscoso played 8 of the 9 events in 2022, while De La Rosa played 6 of 9.

They both won twice last year, and were in two semi-finals. But Moscoso was in four quarterfinals to De La Rosa’s one and De La Rosa also had a loss in the Round of 16. That all amounts to advantage Moscoso.

Rankings are a measure of how well AND how often players have played. One can quibble with them, if one likes. And sometimes what people think are inaccuracies can occur. Serena Williams was arguably the best women’s tennis player for close to two decades, but she wasn’t always the #1 player during that period, as she had some injuries, and also didn’t play as much as some other players.

But you knew that when Williams was in the draw, she was a threat to win the tournament. That’s the case with De La Rosa now. He may not be #1, but no one would be surprised if he wins on Sunday.

De La Rosa is seeded #1 in doubles with Javier Mar, as Mar’s usual partner - Rodrigo Montoya - isn’t in Sioux Falls. Moscoso and Alejandro Landa are the 2nd seeds in doubles. They were the runners up two weeks ago, losing to Mar and Montoya in the final in Austin.

The opening round is Thursday afternoon from 2 PM with the Round of 32 on Thursday night at 6 and 7 PM. The Round of 16 will be Friday morning at 10 and 11 AM. The quarterfinals will be Friday night starting at 5 PM with the semi-finals Saturday afternoon at 4 and 5 PM. The final is Sunday at 11 AM. All times Central.

Natera and Scott win twice at 2023 Longhorn Open

Alan Natera won Men’s Open at the 2023 Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas on the weekend. He beat Texas teenager Cole Sendrey, the 6th seed, 15-4, 15-9, in the final. In the semi-finals, Natera, who was the top seed, needed a tie-breaker to defeat Diego Gastelum, 15-5, 5-15, 11-0, and Sendrey upset 2nd seed Dylan Pruitt, 15-4, 13-15, 11-9

Natera also won Men’s Open Doubles with Carla Muñoz. They eked out the win in the final over Will Reynolds and Israel Torres, 15-11, 13-15, 11-10. In the semi-finals, Muñoz and Natera beat Michelle De La Rosa and Erika Manilla, 15-6, 10-15, 11-3, while Reynolds and Torres, who were the 5th seeds, upset top seeds Jaime Martell and Scott Schafer, 15-14, 15-9.

Hollie Scott won Women’s Open in Austin. She defeated Naomi Ros, 15-6, 15-1, in the final. In the semi-finals, Scott beat Stephanie Synhorst, 15-10, 15-4, and Ros defeated Estefania Perez Picon, 15-0, 15-3.

Ros and Perez Picon teamed up to win Women’s Open Doubles, which was a five team round robin competition. They were undefeated across four matches, and defeated the 2nd place team of Shane Diaz and Graci Wargo, 15-9, 15-4.

The Mixed Doubles title went to Scott and Gastelum, who came back from a game down in the final to defeat Pruitt and Ros, 8-15, 15-5, 11-3. Scott and Gastelum also dropped the first game of their semi-final against Shane Diaz and Micah Farmer, but won in three games, 8-15, 51-2, 11-2. Pruitt and Ros won the other semi in straight games over Reynolds and Kimberley Randolph, 15-4, 15-4.

There were a crazy number of players in the 2023 Longhorn Open: 380 overall. The largest division was Men’s A with 50 players. Fifty is more than some tournaments have these days. It took six (6!) matches for Jesus Jacquez to win Men’s A. He defeated Christian Treviño in the final, 15-4, 15-6, and, impressively, they were the 45th (Jacquez) and 46th seeds (Treviño). In fact, only one of the top 8 seeds made the quarterfinals.

De La Rosa, Mar & Montoya win at 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

Daniel De La Rosa won the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) 2023 Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas Sunday, as the IRT’s #1 player beat IRT #3 Conrrado Moscoso in the final, 15-14, 15-12. In the doubles final, Javier Mar and Rodrigo Montoya defeated Alejandro Landa and Moscoso, 15-11, 15-6.

”It was a good match,” De La Rosa said after the singles final, and “it feels great” to win it. He complimented Moscoso saying “he reads the ball” really well, and “executes well.”

The singles final was full of great shots, and the score was close throughout both games. In game one, neither De La Rosa or Moscoso had more than a two point lead. There were seven lead changes, and ten ties (not counting 0-0).

In his earlier matches in Austin, Moscoso had closed well, even when the games were close early. Thus, when he eked ahead at 11-9, 12-11, and 14-12, it looked like Moscoso would close out game one too.

He had two chances to do so. But De La Rosa fended off the first with a forehand winner, and on the second he forced Moscoso into skipping a forehand shot. De La Rosa won the game on three straight rallies, as Moscoso skipped a lob serve return, then De La Rosa hit a forehand wide angle pass from the left side of the court to make it 14-14.

The game winning rally was a classic three shot play. De La Rosa drove serve to the left side. Moscoso hit a backhand return that was high, and came big off the back wall, which gave De La Rosa a set up. He flat rolled a backhand shot that gave Moscoso no chance for a reply.

Game two was also close, although De La Rosa had a four point lead twice (7-3 & 11-7), only to see Moscoso come back both times and tie it (at 7-7 & 11-11, respectively). A forehand pinch got Moscoso a one point lead at 12-11, so it looked like he might force a tie-breaker.

But Moscoso skipped a pinch shot on the next rally, and never served again. De La Rosa tied it at 12-12 with a forehand shot down the left side. He went ahead when Moscoso skipped a backhand shot that he hit off speed, which is not really Moscoso’s forte, as he’s a power player.

The next rally was one of the best of the match, as Moscoso dove two and a half times, as well as hitting a shot between his legs. But that was all for naught, as De La Rosa drove a forehand cross court shot home for the winner, as Moscoso slipped trying to get to it.

As in game one, De La Rosa’s game winning rally was three shots. He drove serve to the left side. Moscoso hit a backhand return that was a high pinch, coming across the court and off the right wall, and De La Rosa buried a forehand shot into the front right corner to take the first IRT event of the 2023 season.

In the doubles final, they were back and forth early in game one, and Landa and Moscoso were actually ahead in the mid-game with leads of 8-5 and 9-6. But Mar and Montoya came back and tied it at 9-9 and then again at 10-10.

When Mar and Montoya tied it at 11-11, it was the first of five points on as many rallies that closed out game one. Montoya winners ended four of those rallies, including the last won as he hit a backhand cross court to end the game.

In game two, they were close early and tied at 3-3. But Mar and Montoya took over from there, going out to a 8-3 lead, which they did not relinquish, as they went on to win it 15-6.

The last rally began with Mar lob serving to Landa on the right side. Landa hit a ceiling ball return cross court where Montoya set up for a backhand pinch shot winner.

Thus, Mar and Montoya proved their #1 seeding. They’re former (International Racquetball Federation (IRF)) Men’s Doubles World Champions, winning the title in 2021. Part of what makes them so formidable is that they both rekill shots very well. Mar is especially good at turning what looks like a good shot by an opponent into a winner for his side.

The next IRT event will be in the Lewis Drug Pro-Am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, January 19-22. That will be followed by the Suivant Consulting Pro-Am in Lilburn, Georgia, February 16-19.

Top seeds through to the final of 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

Both top seeds - in singles and doubles - are through to the finals at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) 2023 Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas. In singles, Daniel De La Rosa - the IRT’s #1 player - beat IRT #4 Eduardo Portillo, 15-8, 15-7. He’ll play IRT #3 Conrrado Moscoso in the final Sunday, as Moscoso defeated 15th seed Javier Mar, 15-10, 15-12.

Moscoso will have a chance to win twice Sunday, as he’s also in the doubles final. He and Alejandro Landa, the 2nd seeds, beat Andés Acuña and Portillo in the semis, 15-8, 15-4. Moscoso and Landa will face the top seeds in the final: Mar and Rodrigo Montoya, as Mar and Montoya defeated De La Rosa and Sebastian Fernandez, 15-14, 14-15, 11-5 on Saturday.

De La Rosa and Moscoso were the only two players to win twice on the IRT last year. Thus, their meeting in the final Sunday is highly anticipated.

In the semis, De La Rosa pretty much led wire to wire against Portillo. Portillo got within one of De La Rosa at 6-5 in game one, but was never closer than that at any other point in the match.

Moscoso was pushed harder by Mar, who actually had an 8-0 lead in game two. But Moscoso came back and tied it at 9-9, and pushed on to win it. After trailing 8-0, Moscoso outscored Mar 15-3 to win the match in two games.

De La Rosa had a chance to get to the doubles final, even though he and Fernandez trailed Mar and Montoya in game one of their semi-final, 8-4 and then 14-10. De La Rosa and Fernandez held off Mar and Montoya at game point seven (7!) times. In doing so, they came back and got to 14 themselves. On their first game point, De La Rosa had a set up to hit a forehand pinch shot, but he skipped it.

On the next rally, De La Rosa and Fernandez’s second game point, Montoya hit a backhand winner that gave his side the serve back. Montoya followed that up with a backhand pinch shot to close out game one on their 8th opportunity.

In game two, De La Rosa and Fernandez led at 7-2 and 13-8, but they stalled there, and Mar and Montoya took advantage, scoring six points in a row on seven rallies to get to match point at 14-13. Montoya skipped a forehand shot that was an unforced error, and his side didn’t get another chance, as De La Rosa and Fernandez got two points to close out game two and force a tie-breaker.

The tie-breaker was close early, as they were tied 3-3. Then Mar and Montoya edged ahead to lead 7-3. De La Rosa and Fernandez came back to get within two at 7-5, but they wouldn’t score any more as Mar and Montoya when on to win the game 11-5 and the match 2-1.

Mar into 2nd career semi-final at 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

Javier Mar, the 15th seed, has made his 2nd International Racquetball Tour (IRT) semi-final, as he’s into the semis at the 2023 IRT Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas after defeating 10th seed Andrés Acuña, 15-13, 15-13, in the quarterfinals. He’ll play IRT #3 Conrrado Moscoso in the semi-finals, as Moscoso beat 6th seed Jake Bredenbeck, 15-11, 15-10, in the quarters.

It’s been chalk on the top of the draw, as IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa faces #4 Eduardo Portillo in the semis. Both had comfortable wins in the quarters. De La Rosa beat 8th seed Rodrigo Montoya, 15-9, 15-4, in what we anticipated would be a closer match, while Portillo defeated 12th seed Thomas Carter, 15-1, 15-4. De La Rosa and Portillo are both shooters, and played well in the quarters, so it will be interesting to see which of them will be able to continue that excellent play in the semi-finals.

It was also chalk in doubles, as the top four seeds are through to the semi-finals, although two of the quarterfinals were tie-breakers. Top seeds Mar and Montoya won in two straight games over Carter and Andree Parrilla, 15-10, 15-9. They’ll play 4th seeds De La Rosa and Sebastian Fernandez in one semi-final, as De La Rosa and Fernandez came back from a game down to defeat brothers Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck, 12-15, 15-11, 11-8.

Second seeds Alejandro Landa and Moscoso also needed a breaker to get past 7th seeds Adam Manilla and Mario Mercado, 15-8, 6-15, 11-8. Their semi-final opponents will be 3rd seeds Acuña and Portillo who beat 11th seeds Guillermo Jesus Ortega Jr. and Erick Trujillo, 15-12, 15-10.

You can see the Longhorn Open semi-finals via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The singles semi-finals will be 7:35 PM and 8:35 PM Saturday with the final Sunday at noon. The doubles semi-finals are at 4:50 and 5:50 Saturday afternoon, and the doubles final will follow the singles final on Sunday. All times Central.

Mar upsets Parrilla at 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

Javier Mar, seeded 15th, at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) 2023 Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas, took out IRT #2 Andree Parrilla on Friday, 7-15, 15-8, 11-7, in the Round of 16. Mar hasn’t been IRT regular, so his ranking isn’t as high as perhaps it should be for someone who was an IRT finalist last season, as well as a former International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Men’s Doubles World Champion.

Mar’s partner for that doubles World Championship was Rodrigo Montoya, who also came back from a game down to win on Friday, although Montoya’s match with Adam Manilla was actually closer, as he won 12-15, 15-12, 11-10, in what was the battle of 8th and 9th seeds (Montoya & Manilla, respectively). Montoya will face IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa in the quarterfinals, as De La Rosa beat 16th seed Erick Trujillo, 15-6, 15-5 in the 16s.

In the breaker, Mar and Parrilla were close early, and tied at 3-3. Then Mar pulled away to lead 7-3, and 10-4. Parrilla closed the gap to 10-7, but then Mar got the serve back with a great backhand pinch winner of a Parrilla lob serve to the left side that came off the side wall. On the next rally, Mar hit a half lob serve to the right side, and Parrilla skipped it trying for a winner from shoulder high.

In the quarters, Mar will play another upset winner, as he’ll take on 10th seed Andrés Acuña, who beat 7th seed Mario Mercado, 15-7, 15-7, in what was a rematch of last year’s World Games semi-final that Acuña also won en route to winning gold at the World Games in Birmingham, Alabama. That was Costa Rica’s first medal at the World Games, and Acuña is nominated for World Games Athlete of the Year.

Thomas Carter was also an upset winner in the 16s, as he was the 12th seed, and defeated 5th seed Alejandro Landa, 15-13, 15-10. The lefthander will face 4th seed Eduardo Portillo in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon, as Portillo beat Alan Natera, 15-12, 15-5, Friday.

Anthony Martin, who came through qualifying and reached the Round of 16 without hitting a ball, ran out of luck against 6th seed Jake Bredenbeck, losing 15-5, 15-4. Bredenbeck will play IRT #3 Conrrado Moscoso in the quarters Saturday, as Moscoso beat Jaime Martell, 15-2, 15-9 in the 16s.

In doubles, there was only one tie-breaker in the Round of 16, as 7th seeds Adam Manilla and Mario Mercado came back from a game down to defeat 10th seeds Alejandro Cardona and Erick Cuevas Fernandez, 10-15, 15-3, 11-5. They’ll face 2nd seeds Landa and Moscoso in the quarters Saturday morning.

You can see some of the Longhorn Open action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The quarterfinals will be Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM and 2:45 PM with the semi-finals at 7:35 PM and 8:35 PM. The final is Sunday at noon. The doubles quarters are Saturday at 9:45 and 10:55 with the semi-finals at 4:50 and 5:50 Saturday afternoon. The doubles final will follow the singles final on Sunday. All times Central.

Round of 32 at the 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

There were a few upsets in the Round of 32 at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas on Friday, but only one was in a completed match. Alan Natera came back to defeat 13th seed Sebastian Fernandez, 9-15, 15-14, 11-9. That’s two three game matches in a row, and he’ll play his third match of the day tonight, when he faces 4th seed Eduardo Portillo. That’s a lot of racquetball.

Anthony Martin may be the most fortunate player in the draw, as he’s into the Round of 16, but hasn’t hit a ball yet. He had a default win over 11th seed Sebastian Franco today after having a default win over Mauricio Zelada yesterday. We’ll see if Martin’s luck holds up tonight, when he plays 6th seed Jake Bredenbeck.

Jaime Martell also benefitted from a forfeit against 14th seed Eduardo Garay Friday, and he’ll play 3rd seed Conrrado Moscoso in the 16s tonight.

Gerson Miranda Martinez - one of the qualifiers we highlighted earlier - almost made the Round of 16, but fell to 16th seed Erick Trujillo, 12-15, 15-7, 11-5. Trujillo will play IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa tonight.

You can see some of the Longhorn Open action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The Round of 16 begins Friday night at 7:25 PM. The quarterfinals will be Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM and 2:45 PM with the semi-finals at 7:35 PM and 8:35 PM. The final is Sunday at noon. The doubles competition begins Friday afternoon at 4:15 and 5:25. All times Central.

Surprise results in first rounds of 2023 Longhorn Open

The two top seeds in qualifying both lost their first matches at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Longhorn Open in Austin, Texas Friday morning. Robert Collins, IRT #22, lost to Gerson Miranda Martinez, 15-9, 9-15, 11-5, and IRT #24 Erick Cuevas Fernandez, was beaten by Jose Carlos Ramos, 15-10, 15-11. Ramos is ranked #137 and Miranda is unranked, so these are surprise wins.

Both Ramos and Miranda had to win yesterday to play today, so when they play in the Round of 32 this afternoon, it will be their third matches of the tournament. Miranda will take on 16th seed Erick Trujillo, while Ramos faces 15th seed Javier Mar.

Some of the other matches in the 32s should also be interesting, as two 10th seed Andrés Acuña plays Diego Garcia, lefty Thomas Carter faces Sam Bredenbeck, Eduardo Garay is up against Jaime Martell, and Sebastian Fernandez plays Alan Natera, who needed a tie-breaker to advance, holding on to defeat Elias Nieto, 15-6, 11-15, 11-3, Friday morning.

You can see some of the Longhorn Open action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The Round of 32 begins Friday morning with the Round of 16 Friday night from 7:25 PM.

Preview of 2023 IRT Longhorn Open

It’s the first weekend of 2023, and time for the first International Racquetball Tour (IRT) event of the 2023 season. Thirty six IRT players are in the Longhorn Open draw in Austin, Texas, including the top five players, led by IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa. He won two IRT events last year, as did IRT #3 Conrrado Moscoso, who was also won the 2022 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Men’s Singles World Championship.

But it’s Jake Bredenbeck who has a chance to win back to back events this weekend, as he won the John Pelham Memorial Tournament of Champions in Portland, Oregon last month. That was Bredenbeck’s first IRT win. He’s seeded 6th this week, and could face Moscoso in the quarterfinals.

They are also playing doubles in Austin, where former IRF Men's Doubles World Champions Javier Mar and Rodrigo Montoya are the top seeds. Alejandro Landa and Moscoso are the 2nd seeds. Andrés Acuña and Eduardo Portillo are 3rd seeds with De La Rosa and Sebastian Fernandez 4th seeds. De La Rosa and Fernandez could face the Bredenbeck brothers - Jake and Sam, the 5th seeds - in the quarterfinals.

There are a few players missing this weekend. Veterans Alvaro Beltran and Kane Waselenchuk are both out with injuries, and Rocky Carson and Samuel Murray are also absent. But 15 of the top 22 players are in Austin, so there will be plenty of good matches going on this weekend.

Overall, 381 players will compete in at the Longhorn Open, making it one of the biggest tournaments of the year.

You can see some of the IRT action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. Qualifying rounds begin Thursday from 3 PM with final qualifying Friday morning. The Round of 32 starts late Friday morning with the Round of 16 Friday night from 7:25 PM. The quarterfinals will be Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM and 2:45 PM with the semi-finals at 7:35 PM and 8:35 PM. The final is Sunday at noon. All times Central.
