2017 UnitedHealthCare US Open - IRT Qualifying Round 1

Play has begun in the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) qualifying rounds at the 2017 UnitedHealthcare US Open in Minneapolis. No surprises so far, but former IRT #1 Sudsy Monchik made a successful return to the tour with a convincing win over Justin Johnson, 11-0, 11-0, 11-1. Monchik will play Gerardo Franco in the second round of qualifying later on Wednesday with the winner to face Felipe Camacho in the Round of 32 on Thursday.

In other early action, Edson Martinez, who has been a Mexican National Team member, needed four games to defeat Costa Rican Gabriel Garcia, 12-10, 3-11, 11-5, 11-8. Martinez will play another Costa Rican in the next round in Teobaldo Fumero, who beat Gunhee Lee, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7, in Round 1.

In an unfortunate bit of scheduling, doubles partners Nicholas Riffel and Adam Manilla will face off in the 2nd Round of Qualifying. In the 1st Round, Riffel needed five games to get past Noe Rivera, 11-4, 11-3, 8-11, 9-11, 11-1, while Manilla was a decisive winner against Roger Subieta, 11-0, 11-1, 11-2.

The 2017 UnitedHealthcare US Open continues Wednesday and finishes Sunday October 8 at the Life Time Athletic Target Center club in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2017 UnitedHealthCare US Open - LPRT Draws

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) draw is out for the 2017 UnitedHealthcare US Open in Minneapolis. Thus, we now know where former #2 Maria Vargas will be. She’s been inactive for the past year, so Vargas has to play a qualifying match to get into the Round of 32. That match will be against Brenda Laime with the winner to play 5th seed Rhonda Rajsich in the 32s. It will be interesting to see how Vargas fares in Minneapolis.

Also of interest will be how Janel Tisinger and Aimee Ruiz - the current World Champion Women’s Doubles team - fare, as they also have to qualify to get into the main draw. They’ll play the young team of Erika Manilla and Melania Sauma early on Wednesday with the winner to play Carla Muñoz and Michelle De La Rosa for a spot in the quarterfinals. If they get to the quarters, they’ll play top seeds Jessica Parrilla and Frédérique Lambert.

2017 UnitedHealthCare US Open - IRT Draws

The International Racquetball Tour (IRT) draws have been released for this week’s UnitedHealthcare US Open in Minneapolis, and we have them for you below. Now, we can see how the qualifying matches will go, and there will be some good matches on Wednesday, when play begins.

There’s sure to be a crowd to see Sudsy Monchik play his first match on tour since 2012. But they’ll have to get up early, as Monchik takes on Justin Johnson at 8:15 AM Wednesday morning. No schedule consideration for being a former IRT #1 it seems.

Other matches to look for in the first round of qualifying are Thomas Carter versus Conrrado Moscoso, Dylan Reid against Fernando Rios, and an all South American battle between Colombian Alejandro Herrera and Bolivian Carlos Keller.

The IRT will be streaming matches from the Rounds of 32 and 16 as well as the quarterfinals for free via several platforms. You can check where to catch the action from the IRT Facebook page.
