Annie Roberts of the University of the Pacific won both Women’s #1 Singles and Women’s #1 Doubles on the weekend at the 2022 USA Racquetball Intercollegiate Championships in Tucson, Arizona. Overall, Roberts is the 9th woman to win singles and doubles at Intercollegiates, and the first since 2012, when Sharon Jackson of the University of Alabama did it.
That was Jackson’s second time winning both, first doing so in 2010. Jackson was the second Alabama woman to win both, as Adrienne Fisher had done so in 2005.
Two Baldwin Wallace players won both in back to back years. Kristen Bellows (née Walsh) won them 2001, and then Krystal Csuk did so in 2002. Bellows won them both for a second time in 2004 while playing for the University of Utah, and she did so with her mother Marianne Walsh as her partner.
Other double winners are Susana Acosta (Chihuahua) in 2000, Kerri Wachtel (née Stoffregen) in 1994 for Memphis State, and two Sacramento State players: Robin Levine in 1988 and Crystal Fried in 1985.
Intercollegiate participation
There were 88 players at the 2022 Intercollegiate Championships, which is the lowest participation rate for at least a decade. This is likely due to pandemic concerns; yes, Virginia, we’re still in a pandemic.
On the positive side, the women’s participation was still strong this year. Of the 88 players in Tucson, 36 were women, 40.9%. That’s the 2nd time running that the women’s participation rate has been over 40%, and this is several percentage points higher than the average of the six championships before that (33.3%).
