Carter upsets Manilla in Round of 16 at 2022 IRT John Pelham Memorial

Seven of the top eight seeds won their Round of 16 matches Friday at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) John Pelham Memorial Tournament of Champions in Portland, Oregon. The exception happened in the 8/9 game, as 9th seed Thomas Carter defeated 8th seed Adam Manilla, 11-15, 15-5, 11-9. Next up for Carter will be top seed Andree Parrilla, who was a straight game winner over Charlie Pratt, 15-10, 15-11.

Second seed Eduardo Portillo ended Michael Leduc’s tournament decisively, winning 15-0, 15-0, He’ll play 7th seed Rodrigo Montoya in the quarterfinals, as Montoya held on to defeat 10th seed Alan Natera, 15-5, 11-15, 11-3.

In the other tie-breaker of the Round of 16, 6th seed Mario Mercado also held on to beat 11th seed Robert Collins, 15-6, 9-15, 11-2. Mercado will play 3rd seed Alejandro Landa, who beat 14th seed Rodrigo Mendoza in straight games, 15-4, 15-13.

Finally, 4th seed Samuel Murray had a surprisingly easy time with 13th seed Sam Bredenbeck, winning 15-2, 15-1. Murray will meet another Bredenbeck in the quarters, when he’ll play Sam’s older brother Jake, who beat Erick Cuevas Fernandez, 15-0, 15-5, in the 16s.
