Play begins at 2023 IRT Williams Accounting & Consulting Open

Matches between a wily veteran and a young gun are always fun, and there was one of them Thursday at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Williams Accounting & Consulting Open in Lilburn, Georgia. This time the wily veteran Jose Daniel Ugalde beat young up and comer Erick Trujillo, 15-8, 15-11, in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, Ugalde will play 7th seed Andrés Acuña, who was a winner over Rodrigo Salgado Jr., 15-2, 15-11.

There were three tie-breakers in the 32s. Ninth seed Thomas Carter held on to defeat 24th seed Juan Francisco Cueva, 15-4, 9-15, 11-1, and will play 8th seed Adam Manilla in the quarters; Manilla beat Matt Fontana, 15-2, 15-4, in the 32s.

Robert Collins, the 14th seed, came back from a game down to defeat Edwin Galicia, 10-15, 15-13, 11-4. He’ll play 3rd seed Jake Bredenbeck in the 16s, as Bredenbeck beat Diego Gatica, 15-1, 15-3.

Finally, 15th seed Erick Cuevas Fernandez defeated 18th seed Guillermo Jesus Orega Jr., 15-9, 7-15, 11-7, to set up a showdown with 2nd seed Andree Parrilla, who was a winner over 31st seed Roberto Castro, 15-2, 15-0.

Ugalde was also a winner in doubles, as he and Juan Francisco Cueva defeated Carlos Ramirez and Erick Cuevas Fernandez, 15-14, 12-15, 11-4, in the Round of 16. They’ll play top seeds Rodrigo Montoya and Andree Parrilla in the quarters.

The other tie-breaker in doubles happened as 7th seeds Edwin Galicia and Juan Salvatierra came back to defeat 10th seeds Diego Gatica and Rodrigo Salgado Jr., 9-15, 15-7, 11-6, to set up a match with 2nd seeds Daniel De La Rosa and Alejandro Landa.

Singles play began Thursday afternoon and doubles will begin Thursday night at 7 PM. The singles Round of 16 will be Friday morning at 10 and 11 AM.
