The top four seeds all advanced through the Round of 32 at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) KWM Gutterman Minnesota Hall of Fame Event in Minneapolis, Minnesota Friday morning, although 3rd seed Eduardo Portillo had to come back from a game down to defeat 14th seed Sam Bredenbeck, 7-15, 15-11, 11-3. He’ll play fellow Mexican Rodrigo Montoya, the 6th seed, as Montoya beat his doubles partner 11th seed Javier Mar, 15-12, 15-13. The Portillo/Montoya match will be a repeat of the recent Mexican Nationals final, which was won by Montoya.
IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa defeated veteran John Goth, 15-4, 15-7, and will play 8th seed Adam Manilla in the quarterfinals, as Manilla beat 9th seed Andrés Acuña, 15-11, 15-3, in the 16s. Also, IRT #2 Conrrado Moscoso defeated fellow Bolivian Kadim Carrasco, 15-4, 15-10, and will face Canadian Samuel Murray in the quarters, as Murray beat lefthander Thomas Carter, 15-13, 15-3.
There was an upset in the Round of 16, but it was by forfeit, as 12th seed Alan Natera got a default win over 5th seed Alejandro Landa. Natera will play 4th seed Jake Bredenbeck in the quarterfinals, as Bredenbeck beat lefty Robert Collins, 15-8, 15-0.
There was an upset in the doubles quarterfinals, although not a big one, as it happened in the 4/5 match. Fifth seeds Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck defeated 4th seeds Adam Manilla and Samuel Murray in two close games, 15-14, 15-10. The Bredenbecks will play the top seeds Javier Mar and Rodrigo Montoya in the semi-finals Saturday morning, as Mar and Montoya won what was surprisingly the second closest quarterfinal match by beating 9th seeds Lee Meinerz and Carlos Pando, 15-10, 15-13.
It’ll be 2 v 3 in the other semi, as 2nd seeds De La Rosa and Moscoso beat 7th seeds Diego Gatica and Rodrigo Salgado Jr., 15-6, 15-4, and 3rd seeds Acuña and Portillo defeated 6th seeds Kadim Carrasco and Natera, 15-4, 15-9.
