Carson & Landa to face off in final of 2019 IRT Los Compadres Auto Sales Open

Rocky Carson and Alejandro Landa, the top seeds at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Los Compadres Auto Sales Open in Fullerton, California. will face off in the final on Sunday. In Saturday’s semi-finals, Carson, the #1 seed, beat 4th seed Andree Parrilla, 15-7, 15-3, while 2nd seed Landa defeated 3rd seed Alvaro Beltran, 15-12, 15-12.

Carson was dominant against Parrilla, as he won both games comfortably. They were only close early in game two.

The Landa-Beltran match was much closer. Indeed, Beltran had leads early in both games. In game one he led 8-5, but Landa got four points to lead 9-8. At that point Beltran smashed the ball into the back wall in frustration. That cost him a point, as he was given a technical.

He did the same thing when Landa got to 12-8. On the IRT, if a player is assessed four technicals in a match, the player loses the match. Beltran was halfway there in game one of his semi-final.

Despite those two technicals, Beltran did come back in game one, as he got within two at 14-12. But Landa was able to get over the line and finish the game off.

In game two, it looked like a tie-breaker was in the offing, as Beltran went out to leads of 6-0 and 8-3. But after Landa got a point to get within three trailing 8-5, Beltran was kicking the ball up as if it was a soccer ball that he was trying to keep in the air. Unfortunately for him, he it the ball out of the court, which is a technical (hitting the ball out of the play between rallies). That put Beltran within one technical of being disqualified from the match, but he was still leading, though only by two at 7-5.

Nonetheless, Beltran actually extended his lead to 10-5. But then Landa scored nine unanswered points to lead 14-10. Beltran did stop Landa at that point, and scored a couple of points himself. But that only delayed what seemed to be the inevitable, as Landa got the last point off a soft backhand after a diving get by Beltran.

Most seeds through at the 2019 IRT Los Compadres Auto Sales Open

Seven of the top eight seeds in singles and three of the top four seeds in doubles are through to the quarterfinals and semi-finals, respectively, at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Los Compadres Auto Sales Open in Fullerton, California. But Sebastian Franco, the 10th seed, defeated 7th seed Eduardo Portillo, 7-15, 15-12, 11-8, in the Round of 16, to book his place in the quarters, where he’ll face 2nd seed Alejandro Landa, who beat Carlos Keller in two straight games, 15-4, 15-7.

In doubles, it’s the top seeds that are out. The #1 seeded Mexi-Can team of Landa (Mexico) and Samuel Murray (Canada) were victims of the 8th seeded team from Bolivia Keller and Conrrado Moscoso, 15-6, 15-11. The Bolivians will play the USA team of Jake Bredenbeck and Jose Diaz in the semi-finals, as Bredenbeck and Diaz, the 4th seeds, beat 5th seeds Eduardo Garay and Rodrigo Montoya, 15-6, 6-15, 11-6.

But the tastiest match of the day could be between top seed Rocky Carson and 8th seed Daniel De La Rosa. In the 16s, Carson defeated 16th seed Sebastian Fernandez, 15-10, 15-7, and De La Rosa took out 9th seed Rodrigo Montoya, 15-7, 15-10.

Three upsets in Round of 32 at 2019 IRT Los Compadres Auto Sales Open

There were three upsets in the Round of 32 Friday at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Los Compadres Auto Sales Open in Fullerton, California. Javier Estrada caused the biggest of them, as he came from a game down to defeat 11th seed David Horn, 12-15, 15-7, 11-9. Horn was up 9-4 in the breaker, but Estrada came back with seven unanswered points to win it, 11-9. Match point was a long rally that included two dives by Estrada to save the ball off the back wall, and ended when a ball came into the middle and Estrada held up as Horn seemed to be in the way of his swing. The referee assessed a penalty hinder and it was over.

Estrada will play 6th seed Samuel Murray in the Round of 16 Friday afternoon.

In the other upsets, Eduardo Garay knocked off 14th seed Gerardo Franco, 15-8, 15-2, and will play 3rd seed Alvaro Beltran in the 16s, while Carlos Keller beat 15th seed Robert Collins, 15-12, 15-4, and faces 2nd seed Alejandro Landa in the 16s.

Sebastian Fernandez ended the run of yesterday’s big winner - Majeed Shahin - in the 32s, as Fernandez defeated Shahin, 15-3, 15-5. Fernandez will play #1 seed Rocky Carson in the 16s later today.
