Rocky Carson and Alejandro Landa, the top seeds at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Los Compadres Auto Sales Open in Fullerton, California. will face off in the final on Sunday. In Saturday’s semi-finals, Carson, the #1 seed, beat 4th seed Andree Parrilla, 15-7, 15-3, while 2nd seed Landa defeated 3rd seed Alvaro Beltran, 15-12, 15-12.
Carson was dominant against Parrilla, as he won both games comfortably. They were only close early in game two.
The Landa-Beltran match was much closer. Indeed, Beltran had leads early in both games. In game one he led 8-5, but Landa got four points to lead 9-8. At that point Beltran smashed the ball into the back wall in frustration. That cost him a point, as he was given a technical.
He did the same thing when Landa got to 12-8. On the IRT, if a player is assessed four technicals in a match, the player loses the match. Beltran was halfway there in game one of his semi-final.
Despite those two technicals, Beltran did come back in game one, as he got within two at 14-12. But Landa was able to get over the line and finish the game off.
In game two, it looked like a tie-breaker was in the offing, as Beltran went out to leads of 6-0 and 8-3. But after Landa got a point to get within three trailing 8-5, Beltran was kicking the ball up as if it was a soccer ball that he was trying to keep in the air. Unfortunately for him, he it the ball out of the court, which is a technical (hitting the ball out of the play between rallies). That put Beltran within one technical of being disqualified from the match, but he was still leading, though only by two at 7-5.
Nonetheless, Beltran actually extended his lead to 10-5. But then Landa scored nine unanswered points to lead 14-10. Beltran did stop Landa at that point, and scored a couple of points himself. But that only delayed what seemed to be the inevitable, as Landa got the last point off a soft backhand after a diving get by Beltran.
