Cheryl Gudinas won the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization (WPRO) Ektelon World Championships in New Orleans Sunday after Paola Longoria withdrew from the match after the third game. Longoria won the first two games 11-7, 11-2, but at 0-2 in game three, she rolled her right ankle.
Longoria took her injury time and then continued with the game, but lost it 11-2. After that game, she withdrew from the match. A source in New Orleans, informs us that Longoria was feeling shooting pain in the ankle and that swelling was already evident when she chose to stop playing.
It marks the second consecutive season that the final tournament has not gone to Longoria or Rhonda Rajsich, the #1 and #2 ranked WPRO players, respectively, who have won all the other events since the beginning of last season. Kristen Walsh Bellows won last year's season ending event, when she defeated Longoria in Stockton.
Despite the loss, we expect that Longoria will finish #1, as she was ahead of Rajsich going in to this weekend, and she reached the finals while Rajsich lost in the semi-finals to Gudinas.
