Carla Muñoz of Colorado State, Pueblo was trying to go 4 for 4 on Saturday at the USA Racquetball 2019 Intercollegiate Championships at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, as she was the 3 time defending champion in Women’s Singles. However, 3rd seed Hollie Scott of the University of Washington prevented a perfect collegiate record for Muñoz by defeating the defending champ in the final, and did so convincingly by winning 15-2, 15-8. The win avenged a loss to Muñoz in last year’s Intercollegiate semi-finals.
In the Women's Singles semi-finals, Scott defeated 2nd seed Erika Manilla (Northern Arizona), 15-9, 15-4, and Muñoz beat 5th seed Melania Sauma (Arizona State), 15-3, 15-8. In the 3rd place match, Manilla defeated Sauma, 15-5, 4-15, 11-4.
The Men’s Singles final was contested by the same players as last year, and once again Erik Garcia of Colorado State, Pueblo defeated Alejandro Almada (Texas), although he needed a tie-breaker this year to take the title, winning 15-5, 6-15, 11-5. In the semi-finals, Garcia beat 5th seed Jacob Matthews (East Carolina), 15-3, 15-7, and Almada ousted 3rd seed Jeremy Dixon (Baldwin Wallace), 15-2, 15-5. Dixon won the 3rd place match against Matthews, 15-14, 15-8.
Garcia also won Men's Doubles - with Lukas Le - so the for the second year he was a double champion for the second year, and again Almada came out on the short end in the final, as Garcia and Le defeated Almada and Jerry Yang (Texas), 15-4, 15-12. In the semi-finals, Garcia and Le beat Nathan Buring and Nick Buring (Oregon State), 15-10, 15-4, and Almada and Yang defeated Jeremy Dixon and Daniel Herrera (Baldwin Wallace), 15-7, 15-8. In the 3rd place match, Dixon and Herrera beat Buring and Buring, 15-6, 15-2.
The Colorado State, Pueblo team of Brenda Laime and Adriana Riveros beat Natalie Lorati and Lexi York of Oregon State, 15-7, 15-12, to win the Women’s Doubles title. In the semis, Laime and Riveros defeated Lindsay Briglia and Erika Manilla (Northern Arizona), 15-13, 15-2, and Lorati and York beat Elyse Duffie and Elena Robles (Purdue), 15-7, 15-5. Duffie and Robles defeated Briglia and Manilla, 15-6, 2-15, 11-4, for 3rd place.
