2019 IRT Syosset Open - Preliminary Round Results

Andrés Gómez had the first big upset in qualifying at the 2019 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Syosset Open in Syosset, New York, as he defeated IRT #10 Mario Mercado, 14-15, 15-7, 11-9, in the second round of qualifying - the Round of 64. Sadly for Gómez his good fortune was short lived, as he lost in the third round of qualifying to Sebastian Fernandez, 15-8, 15-0. Fernandez will play Samuel Murray in the Round of 16 on Friday.

But the bigger upset may have been Javier Mar’s win over Rodrigo Montoya, 15-12, 15-7, as Montoya is the current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Men’s Singles World Champion. However, Mar is very familiar with Montoya’s game, as they played doubles together last month at the 2019 Pan American Championships in Barranquilla, Colombia, where they were bronze medalists.

The 16/17 seed game went tie-breaker, as you might expect, and the 17th seed Eduardo Portillo squeaked by 16th seed Adam Manilla, 11-15, 15-12, 11-8. Manilla’s a left-hander, and Portillo will face another one in the Round of 16, as he’ll play IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk Friday morning.

Also in qualifying, Andres Acuña beat Jose Diaz, 15-4, 15-12, which was an upset. Acuña will play Alvaro Beltran in the Round of 16 Friday. Also, Jake Bredenbeck fended off Charlie Pratt in three games, 15-8, 6-15, 11-1, and David Horn defeated Felipe Camacho, 15-11, 15-11. In the 16s, Bredenbeck will play Daniel De La Rosa, and Horn plays Andree Parrilla, who soundly beat him last weekend, so Horn will be looking to make a better showing in Syosset.

The Round of 16 will be Friday morning at 10 and 11 AM with the quarterfinals Friday starting at 3 PM. The semi-finals will be 1 and 2 PM Saturday with the final at 1 PM Sunday. All times Eastern.
