Mexicans have a chance to win gold in 10 of the 12 World Cup divisions at the 32nd International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, as they have at least one finalist in the four U16 and four U14 divisions as well as two of the U18 divisions. Mexicans will win at least two gold medals, as both finalists in Boys U18 Singles and Boys U14 Singles are Mexican.
In Boys U18 Singles, Sebastian Longoria of Mexico defeated Ecuador’s Pablo Vera, 15-3, 15-6, in one semi-final Friday, while team-mate Erick Trujillo beat Bolivian Luis Aguilar, 15-9, 15-0, in the other.
The Girls U18 final is one of the two that doesn’t have a Mexican, as both Mexicans lost in the semi-finals. Bolivian Micaela Meneses beat Daniela Rico of Mexico, 15-6, 15-2, in the semis, and will face Argentina’s Martina Katz in the final, as Katz defeated Ximena Martinez of Mexico, 15-6, 15-6, in the other semi.
Meneses could be a double gold medalist, as she and Florencio Villazon are in the Girls U18 Doubles final after beating Ecuador’s Fabi Landry and Maria Laura Villacreses, 15-1, 15-5, in the semi-finals. They’ll face Mexicans Martinez and Rico in the final, as the Mexicans defeated Sofia Freer and Abigail Solano of Costa Rica, 15-7, 15-7, in the semis.
The Boys U18 Doubles final is the other final that doesn’t involve Mexico. Costa Ricans Felipe Guillen and Andres Matamoros upset top seeds Diego Gatica and Jaime Mansilla of Chile, 15-11, 8-15, 15-1, in one semi-final, and will take on Bolivia’s Jhoel Acha and Nestor Zenteno in the final. Bolivia beat the Canadians Nathan Jauvin and Christian Pocsai, 15-10, 15-9 in the semis.
