American Adam Manilla and Mexican Erick Truillo were the two upset winners in the Round of 16 on Friday at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) SoCal Open in Canoga Park, California, but they got there in different ways. Manilla came back from a game down to oust IRT #4 and current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champion Alejandro Landa, 8-15, 15-8, 11-8, while Truillo got a walkover win, as Kane Waselenchuk, IRT #2, had travel difficulties, so he wasn’t able to make it to California for their match.
Manilla will play Canadian Samuel Murray, the 5th seed, in the quarterfinals Friday night, as Murray defeated Mexican Jordy Alonso, 15-8, 15-5. Truillo will play 7th seed and fellow Mexican Eduardo Portillo, who outlasted 10th seed American Jake Bredenbeck, 15-7, 12-15, 11-5.
IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa took care of business against young Mexican Sebastian Fernandez, winning 15-11, 15-1, and will play former #1 Rocky Carson in the quarterfinals, as Carson beat Colombian Mario Mercado, 15-6, 15-11.
Finally, IRT #3 Andree Parrilla from Mexico will play #6 Conrrado Moscoso, the current Pan American Champion from Bolivia, in the quarters, as Parrilla defeated 14th seed Andres Acuña from Costa Rica in two close games, 15-10, 15-14, and Moscoso beat Mexican 22nd seed Alejandro Cardona, 15-14, 15-4. Cardona had a 8-0 lead in game against Moscoso, but wasn’t able to convert that into a win.
