There were no big surprises on day one of the 2023 International Racquetball Tour (IRT) KWM Gutterman IRT World Singles and Doubles Open Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, but there was one disappointment. Kane Waselenchuk - the #1 player for 14 IRT seasons - forfeited his preliminary round match with DJ Mendoza. Thus, he won’t be playing in the main draw of 32.
We don’t know why Waselenchuk forfeited, although he did play two mixed doubles matches with Michelle Key, and this is his first tournament after his Achilles tendon injury last year. So perhaps that played a part in his decision to withdraw. It’s sad because many people would like to see him play again. “What’s happening with Kane?” has been one of the most frequent questions The Racquetball Blog staff have been asked over the past year.
The marquee match up in the Round of 32 on Friday should be 10th seed Andrés Acuña - the current World Games champion - versus 23rd seed Carlos Keller, who’s a two time Pan American Champion. But Thomas Carter, the veteran left hander, against young gun Diego Garcia should also be good.
The Round of 32 begins at 9 AM with the Round of 16 starting at 2 PM. You can see some of the IRT action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. The quarterfinals will be Saturday morning at 10:15 and 11:15 AM with the semi-finals Saturday afternoon at 2:15 and 3:15 PM. The final will be Sunday at 12:15 PM. All times Mountain.
