First rounds at 2023 IRT Golden State Open presented by JMB

The 2023 Golden State Open presented by JMB - the last event of International Racquetball Tour’s (IRT’s) 2023 season - began Thursday in Pleasanton, California. There are three players who have a chance at finishing #1 this season. Daniel De La Rosa is #1, and he’s about 256 points ahead of #2 Jake Bredenbeck, who is about 110 points ahead of #3 Conrrado Moscoso.

De La Rosa has been #1 the last two seasons, while neither Bredenbeck or Moscoso have finished #1. If Bredenbeck does so, he’ll be the first US player to be #1 since Rocky Carson in 2017-18. If Moscoso manages to be #1, he’ll be the first South American player to be #1 on the IRT.

Both of the players who were #1 before De La Rosa: Carson and Kane Waselenchuk are in the draw this weekend. They both had to play a qualifying match - Round of 64 - prior to the main draw of 32, and both won those matches, as well as their matches in the 32s.

Carson defeated 12th seed Javier Mar, 15-10, 9-15, 11-4, and will play 5th seed Andree Parrilla in the Round of 16, as Parrilla beat Alejandro Cardona, 15-11, 15-4, in the 32s. Waselenchuk defeated 14th seed Erick Trujillo, 15-7, 15-7, and will play Moscoso in the 16s, as Moscoso beat Cole Sendrey, 15-7, 15-4, in the 16s.

The only other upset in the Round of 16 was in the 16/17 match, as 17th seed Sam Bredenbeck eked out a win over 16th seed Kadim Carrasco, 9-15, 15-5, 11-9, to set up a showdown with De La Rosa, who was a winner over 32nd seed Nicholas Riffel, 15-4, 15-3.

They are also playing doubles in Pleasanton this weekend, with Mar and Rodrigo Montoya as the top seeds. They won their first match against 16th seeds Israel Torres and Walter Ramos Jr., 15-7, 15-9, and will play the veteran team of Carson and Alvaro Beltran, who defeated 9th seeds Edwin Galicia and Juan Salvatierra, 15-9, 15-10, in the Round of 16.

Play continues Friday with the Round of 16 from 10 AM on. The quarterfinals will begin at 3 PM Friday. The semi-finals will be Saturday at 2:45 and 3:30 PM with the final at 11:45 AM Sunday. The doubles quarterfinals will be Friday at 7 and 8 PM with the semi-finals at 11 and 11:45 AM Saturday, and the final Saturday at 7:15 PM.
