The second event of the International Racquetball Tour’s (IRT’s) 2024 season begins Thursday in Minneapolis, site of the 2024 McNamara Minnesota Racquetball Hall of Fame tournament. The field of 32 includes 13 of the top 16 players, led by IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso, #2 Rodrigo Montoya and #3 Jake Bredenbeck.
One of the Round of 32 matches we’re looking forward is 6th seed Andrés Acuña versus 27th seed Kurtis Cullen, as those are two of the hardest hitters around. Cullen was runner up to Samuel Murray earlier this month at Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection Event, and will be part of Team Canada at next month’s Pan American Championships. They’ll play at 3 PM Thursday, and Acuña is the highest ranked player in that time slot, so it should be the match being live streamed at that time.
The winner of Acuña and Cullen will play the winner of Kane Waselenchuk and Diego Gatica, which will likely be the former IRT #1 Waselenchuk.
Two other matches to look for in the 32s are 7th seed Alan Natera versus 26th seed Mauricio Zelada, and 10th seed Erick Trujillo versus 23rd seed Edwin Galicia, and the winner of the those two matches will playoff in the Round of 16.
In doubles, Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla are the top seeds with Bolivians Kadim Carrasco and Moscoso 2nd seeds, and Cullen and Montoya 3rd seeds. Some of the interesting early doubles matches could be 4th seeds Acuña and Alan Natera against 5th seeds Jake Bredenbeck and Sam Bredenbeck, and Cullen and Montoya versus 6th seeds Robert Collins and Erick Trujillo, and the 7th seeded Guatemalans Edwin Galicia and Juan Salvatierra versus Carrasco and Moscoso, although most of those teams need to win a match to set up those matches.
Play begins Thursday with the Round of 32 from 3 PM, and the doubles Round of 16 at 7 and 8 PM Thursday. The singles Round of 16 (10 & 11 AM) and quarterfinals (from 5 PM) on Friday, with the semi-finals Saturday at 3 and 4 PM and the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles quarterfinals will be Friday at 2 PM with the semi-finals Saturday at 10 and 11 AM and the final Sunday at noon.
