Round of 32 at 2024 IRT McNamara Minnesota Racquetball Hall of Fame Tournament

Thursday was not a good day for Robert Collins at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) McNamara Minnesota Racquetball Hall of Fame tournament in Minneapolis, as he lost in both singles and doubles. Collins, the 12th seed in singles, lost to veteran John Goth, 15-8, 14-15, 11-9. The left-hander then teamed up with Erick Trujillo as the 6th seeds in doubles, and they lost to 11th seeds Carlos Ramirez and Mauricio Zelada, 15-11, 15-3. He’ll be happy that February 29th only comes once every four years.

In the singles Round of 16, Goth will take on 5th seed Adam Manilla, who beat 28th seed Hector Barrios, 15-8, 15-4, on Thursday. Also in the doubles quarterfinals, Ramirez and Zelada will take on 3rd seeds Kurtis Cullen and Rodrigo Montoya, who needed a tie-breaker to defeat Miguel Angel Arteaga Guzman and Jonathan Flores, 15-9, 6-15, 11-3.

Those were the only upsets on Thursday in Minneapolis. IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso beat 32nd seed Sebastian Terrazas, 15-3, 15-3, and will play 16th seed Carlos Ramirez on Friday, as Ramirez defeated 17th seed Jim Douglas, 15-1, 15-1. Also, IRT #2 Montoya beat 31st seed Jaime Mansilla, 15-6, 15-5, but will surely face a stiffer test in the 16s Friday, when he’ll play 15th seed Sam Bredenbeck, who defeated 18th seed Rafael Gatica, 15-3, 15-2, on Thursday.

Of the matches that we highlighted in our preview, 6th seed Andrés Acuña played very well in defeating 27th seed Kurtis Cullen, 15-7, 15-4, and will need to be good again on Friday, when he faces former IRT #1 Kane Waselenchuk, who crushed Diego Gatica, 15-0, 15-1, Thursday.

Elsewhere, 7th seed Alan Natera beat 26th seed Mauricio Zelada in two straight games, 15-11, 15-3, which we thought would be closer. However, the match between 10th seed Erick Trujillo and 23rd seed Edwin Galicia was close, as anticipated, with Trujillo coming back to win, 4-15, 15-13, 11-3.

Play continues Friday with the singles Round of 16 (at 10 & 11 AM) and quarterfinals (from 5 PM), with the semi-finals Saturday at 3 and 4 PM and the final Sunday at 11 AM. The doubles quarterfinals will be Friday at 2 PM with the semi-finals Saturday at 10 and 11 AM and the final Sunday at noon.
