The 35th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships wrapped up on Saturday in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Mexico and Bolivia split the gold medals in the World Cup divisions (U21, U18, U16). Mexican players won 8 gold and Bolivia 7. Players from the USA were in 3 finals, with Costa Ricans and Ecuadorians in one final each, but none of them won gold.
Bolivians took three of the five gold medals in U21. In the girls divisions, Bolivian Camila Rivero won both singles and doubles. She defeated Mexican Angela Veronica Ortega Sabido, 6-11, 11-9, 11-0, 11-3, in the U21 Singles final, and then teamed up with Natalia Mendez Veizaga to beat Fabiana Landy and Maria Angela Villacreses of Ecuador, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, in the U21 Doubles final.
In the U21 Boys divisions, Bolivian Joel Alexis Acha Portugal outlasted Mexican Sebastian Hernández, 8-11, 11-4, 15-13, 5-11, 11-5. But Hernández and Erick Trujillo won gold in doubles by beating Bolivians Luis Aguilar and Adrian Jaldin Lobo, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9. Then Trujillo got a second by winning the U21 Mixed Doubles final with Ivanna Balderrama, and they defeated Bolivians Acha and Rivero, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.
Bolivians also won three of the five finals in the U18 divisions, although the U18 Girls Singles final was between two Mexicans, with Yanna Salazar defeating her team-mate Cynthia Gutierrez in four games, 11-6, 3-11, 14-12, 14-12. However, Salazar and Gutierrez lost the U18 Girls Doubles final, as they were beaten by Bolivians Natalia Mendez Veizaga and Adriana Noelia Blacutt Conde, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7.
The U18 Boys Singles final was also between team-mates, but in this case two Bolivians, as Jhonatan Flores defeated Nicolas Ramiro Iglesias Rivera, 11-5, 11-8, 14-12. Bolivia also won the U18 Mixed Doubles final, as Iglesias and Florencia Villain Chalco narrowly defeated Americans Naomi Ros and Cole Sendrey, 9-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7, 12-10.
The USA was also in the U18 Boys Doubles final, but DJ Mendoza and Sendrey lost to Mexicans Jorge Gutierrez and Eder Renteria, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 13-11.
Mexicans won four of the five finals in the U16 divisions. The U16 Girls Singles final was between two Mexicans as Miranda Barraza beat Andrea Perez Picon, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5, and they teamed up to win gold in the U16 Girls Doubles final, defeating Americans Victoria Rodriguez and Montserrat Torres, 11-9, 11-5, 11-4.
The U16 Boys Singles gold went to Bolivian Sebastian Terrazas Tapia, who beat Mexican Sebastian Ruelas, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, but Ruelas did win gold in doubles as he and Nicolas Galindo defeated Bismarck Pereira and Terrazas, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8, and then Ruelas and Perez Picon both won a second gold, as they eked out a victory over Costa Ricans Larissa Faeth and Alvaro Guillen, 11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9, in the U16 Mixed Doubles final.
The IRF announced the 2025 World Junior Championships will be in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic next December.
