The semi-finals were played Friday at the 35th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and some of the better known players lost.
For example, in Boys U21 Singles, Mexican Erick Trujillo, who has played on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT), lost in five games, as Bolivian Joel Alexis Acha Portugal came back from two games down to win, 9-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7. Acha will play another Mexican Sebastian Hernández in the final, as Hernández defeated Bolivian Hector Barrios, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9, in the other semi-final.
Then in Girls U18 Singles, American Naomi Ros, who represented the USA at the Pan American Championships earlier this year, lost to Mexican Yanna Salazar, 7-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-8. Salazar will play her team-mate Cynthia Gutierrez for gold on Saturday, as Gutierrez beat Guatemala’s Paula Aguilar, 11-2, 13-11, 11-5, in the other semi.
Also, American Annie Sanchez (née Roberts) lost to Mexican Angela Veronica Ortega Sabido, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7, in the semi-finals of Girls U21 Singles. Ortega will play Bolivian Camila Rivero in the final, as Rivero beat Mexican Ivanna Balderrama, 11-7, 11-7, 11-0, in the other semi.
Costa Rican Alvaro Guillen, in Boys U16 Singles, had one of the big upsets in the quarterfinals Thursday, and looked like he was going to get to the final, as he was up two games on Sebastian Ruelas. However, Ruelas eked out game three, and then won the next two games to book his place in the final, winning 7-11, 9-11, 15-13, 11-2, 11-3.
Ruelas will play Bolivia’s Sebastian Terrazas Tapia in the final Saturday. Terrazas also needed five games to reach the final, as he held off Mexican Nicolas Galindo (Mexico), 12-10, 11-5, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8.
The top seed lost in Boys U18 Singles, as Bolivian Nicolas Ramiro Iglesias Rivera knocked off the #1 seed Jorge Gutierrez of Mexico, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 14-12, 11-9, and will play his team-mate Jhonatan Flores in the final, as Flores also needed five games to defeat Mexican Eder Renteria, 7-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-3.
Who will play for gold?
Mexican players are in 12 of the 15 World Cup finals (i.e., Boys and Girls U21, U18, U16, Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles), and two are all Mexico finals: Girls U18 Singles and Girls U16 Singles. The finals without a Mexican are the Boys U18 Singles final, which is between two Bolivian players, the U18 Mixed Doubles final between Bolivia and the USA, and the Girls U21 Doubles between Bolivia and Ecuador. Bolivians are in 10 of the finals with the USA in 3 finals, and Costa Rica and Ecuador in one final each.
