The favourites have put an end to the upsets with half of the Round of 16 matches completed in the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) division at the 2013 United Healthcare US Open. Moreover, only one match has gone more than the minimum three games, and that was an all-Stockton Jose v. Jose batter between 4th Jose Rojas and 13th seed Jose Diaz, which was won by Rojas 11-8, 6-11, 11-6, 11-2.
Rojas's next match will be in the quarter finals against 5th seed Ben Croft, who beat Polo Gutierrez, 11-5, 11-2, 11-9.
Sixth seed Chris Crowther put an emphatic end to the run of young Coby Iwaasa, defeating the U16 World Junior Champion, 11-0, 11-2, 11-0. The two tried to outdrive serve each other and the veteran Crowther was clearly better at it.
Crowther will play 3rd seed Alvaro Beltran in the quarters on Friday, as Beltran defeated Jansen Allen, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.
Renaissance man Cliff Swain, playing in his first US Open Round of 16 match since 2006, failed to advance to the quarter-finals, as 7th seed Tony Carson defeated him in one of the streakiest matches possible, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.
Carson led in game one 8-0 only to see Swain come back to tie it 8-8 before Carson pushed through and won the game. In game two, Swain had the early lead at 6-0. Then Carson scored seven straight points to make it 7-6.
Swain tied it at 7-7, but could get no more points as Carson finished that game off to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In game three, Carson took a lead at 4-0, and also led 7-5 as he pushed on to win 11-6, taking the match in three straight games.
