2020 LPRT Sweet Caroline Pro-Am - Friday results

Things went mostly as expected on Friday at the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) 2020 Sweet Caroline Pro-Am in Greenville, South Carolina. Both LPRT #1 Paola Longoria and #2 Maria Jose Vargas are through to the quarterfinals. Longoria defeated Carla Muñoz, 15-4, 15-5, in the Round of 16 Friday, and Vargas beat Sheryl Lotts, 15-14, 15-7. But who they play in the next around is somewhat surprising.

Longoria will play Montserrat Mejia in the quarters, which is a bit of a surprise, as Mejia is the 9th seed, and upset 8th seed Cristina Amaya in the 16s, 15-14, 15-9. Vargas plays Bolivian teenager Valeria Centellas, as the 23rd seed was an upset winner over 7th seed Nancy Enriquez in the 16s, winning 15-7, 15-5.

Centellas is also a surprise in doubles, as she and Angelica Barrios have reached the semi-finals by defeating Enriquez and Jessica Parrilla, 15-10, 15-5. But Centellas and Barrios almost didn’t match the quarters, as they only won their previous match by the narrowest of margins, slipping by Masiel Rivera and Lexi York, 15-8, 12-15, 11-10. Centellas and Barrios don’t have much LPRT experience, but they are the 2019 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Champions.

The quarterfinals will be at 11 AM and noon, and the semi-finals at 5 and 6 PM. The singles final will be 1 PM Sunday with the doubles final to follow at 2. All times eastern.
