Medal summary for 2023 IRF World Junior Championships

The 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships wrapped up on Saturday in Tarija, Bolivia, and we have a summary of all the players who reached the podium in Tarija.

Several players were on the podium multiple times, so left Tarija with more than one medal. Nine players earned three medals: four Mexicans, two Americans, two Ecuadorans and one Bolivian. None of the nine was a triple gold medalist, and only Mexican Diego Gastelum two gold medals of his three.

Seventeen players earned two medals: seven Bolivians, five Mexicans, one Argentine, one American, one Chilean, one Costa Rican, and one Ecuadoran. Five of those Bolivians were double gold medalists.

Dominating Bolivian & Mexican performances at the 2023 IRF World Junior Championships

Bolivian Camila Rivero won gold in two divisions - Girl’s U21 & U18 - Saturday at the 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Tarija, Bolivia. In the U21 final, Rivero beat Argentina’s Martina Katz, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6, and in the Girls U18 final, Rivero defeated team-mate Kristin Salinas in the final, 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7.

In Boys U21, Mexican Diego Gastelum won two gold and Bolivia’s Luis Aguilar one, as the two of them faced off in all three of the finals. In the Boys U21 Singles final, Gastelum beat Aguilar, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10, and he got the better of the Bolivian in the U21 Doubles final too, as he and Oscar Elias Nieto Validez defeated Aguilar and Adrian Jaldin Lobo, 12-10, 11-13, 11-1, 13-11.

But in the U21 Mixed Doubles final, Aguilar and Micaela Meneses came out on top, defeating Gastelum and Maria Gutierrez, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6.

Mexican Eder Renteria also had a chance at triple gold in U16 Saturday, but like Aguilar, he only won gold in the U16 Mixed Doubles division, as he and Yanna Salazar came back from a game down to defeat Bolivans Gabriela Diaz Fernández and Marco Antonio Vedia Rosales, 11-13, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3.

In the other two U16 boys divisions, Marco Mamani Aguilar of Bolivia dashed Renteria’s dreams, as he defeated the Mexican in the Boys U16 Singles final, 12-10, 4-11, 11-4, 11-9, and then teamed up with Bismarck Pereira to take the Boys U16 Doubles final from Renteria and Nicolas Galindo, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8.

But Jhonatan Flores of Bolivia may have had the best boys performance of the tournament, as he won Boys U18 Singles by beating Mexican Luis Renteria, 11-6, 11-2, 11-0, in the final. That capped off a seven match win streak in which Flores didn’t lose a game, and surrendered at most 8 points to an opponent twice; he never gave up 9 or more. Flores’s opponents scored 99 points across 21 games for an average of 4.71 points per game.

Bolivia and Mexico medaled in all 15 divisions in Tarija with Bolivia winning 11 gold medals and Mexico 4. In Boys U16 Singles, all four medals went to Bolivia (gold & bronze) and Mexico (silver & bronze). Here’s the country by country medal breakdown.

Vargas and Herrera & Mejia win at 2023 LPRT Turkey Shoot

María José Vargas defeated Erika Manilla, 15-9, 15-5, to win the 2023 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois on Sunday. It’s Vargas’s sixth win on tour, but first since 2019, although it was her third final in 2023.

Vargas never trailed in the match, taking large leads in both games. In the first Manilla came back from 6-0 down to get within one at 9-8. But Vargas outscored her 6-1 from there to close out game one, 15-9.

In game two, Vargas went out to a 7-0 lead, and while Manilla did score some points from there, she never got within five points of Vargas.

In the middle of game one, Vargas hit a backhand lob Z serve to the left side that Manilla was clearly uncomfortable with. Recognizing that Vargas used that serve for most of the rest of the match.

Vargas is a power player, so she generally drive serves, and did that to start game one. But she’s become a smarter player, and her recognition of Manilla’s discomfort and then trying to exploit that is a reflection of that smartness.

Manilla did make some good returns off that lob Z serve, but she was also called for encroachment twice, and continued trying to attack the ball early. Manilla seemed to be assuming that the ball would be too difficult to return if it went to the back wall, but maybe she should have tested that assumption by letting it go and seeing what happened.

Nonetheless, Manilla had a good tournament. She played in her 2nd career final, and beat Brenda Laime and Paola Longoria - both for the first time - to get there. Impressive.

Herrera and Mejia win doubles

Alejandra Herrera and Montserrat Mejia defeated Longoria and Samantha Salas, 12-15, 15-5, 11-9, to win the doubles final, which was a great match between two closely matched teams. There was a bit of controversy at the end, as match point was an avoidable call against Salas, as she prevented Mejia from setting up for a shot as the ball was coming off the back wall.

Longoria and Salas appealed, but the call stood, as the line judges both agreed with the referee’s call. Although harsh at match point, it seemed like the right call.

Herrera and Mejia looked like they were going to win the first game of the final, as they were up 12-5. But Longoria and Salas came back to get 10 unanswered points and steal the game. They carried that momentum into game three, going up 5-0.

However, the tables turned again, as Herrera and Mejia scored 15 (fifteen!) straight points - getting the first 10 without giving up serve to take game two, 15-5.

Herrera was the major force early in game two, as the left-hander started hitting very good drive Z serves to Longoria, who had trouble returning them. So much so that at 7-5, she switched sides with Salas for one return but to no avail.

Longoria and Salas’s timeouts - taken first when still leading 5-4 and then when trailing 9-5 - also didn’t help them.

In game three, Herrera and Mejia were up early at 4-0, 6-1 and 8-3. But, like game one, Longoria and Salas came back, as Salas hit winners on five straight rallies to tie the game at 8–8. Then Mejia skipped a ball to put Longoria and Salas in the lead at 9-8.

Mejia made up for it on the next rally with a touch pinch winner. Salas had been hitting drive Z serves to Mejia, so Longoria came across to hit that serve to Mejia also. But maybe they were outsmarting themselves, as Longoria and Salas lost that rally after Herrera hit a winner.

The teams exchanged sideouts with no one scoring over the next four rallies. A Herrera backhand made it 9-9, and then Longoria mishit a return of another Herrera drive Z serve to put Herrera and Mejia on match point at 10-9.

There was a bit of a scary incident then, as Mejia inadvertently tripped over Salas’s leg. But it was close to the back wall, and when she went down with a loud thud, it was feared that she might have fallen into the wall. However, the sound was worse than it was, as Mejia got up after a few seconds and seemed none the worse for wear.

And then the avoidable happened that ended the match.

The LPRT will next be in action next month at the 31st Annual Christmas Classic, December 8-10, 2023 in Millersville, Maryland.

Vargas & Manilla face off in 2023 LPRT Turkey Shoot final

Erika Manilla and María José Vargas will meet in the final of the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois on Sunday, which is a final that few - if any - saw coming. They got to the final by knocking off the LPRT’s #1 and #2 players.

Manilla, the 6th seed, came back from a game down to defeat LPRT #2 Paola Longoria, 14-15, 15-10, 11-6, and Vargas, LPRT #4, downed the LPRT’s #1 player, Montserrat Mejia, in two straight games, 15-7, 15-7.

Manilla’s semi-final win was her second upset victory of the day, as earlier she beat 3rd seed Brenda Laime, 15-9, 15-7, in the quarterfinals. Also in the quarters, Mejia came back to defeat 8th seed Natalia Mendez, 14-15, 15-10, 11-4, Vargas defeated 5th seed Alexandra Herrera, 15-13, 15-11, and Longoria beat 10th seed Kelani Lawrence, 15-9, 15-6.

While Sunday’s singles final is surprising, the doubles final was expected, as it’ll be #1 versus #2. Top seeds Longoria and Samantha Salas beat 4th seeds Mendez and Vargas, 15-11, 15-2, while 2nd seeds Herrera and Mejia defeated 3rd seeds Laime and Manilla, 15-14, 15-9.

No big surprises at 2023 LPRT Turkey Shoot

No big surprises Friday at the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois. Seven of the top eight seeds are into the quarterfinals. The exception comes from 10th seed Kelani Lawrence upsetting 7th seed Samantha Salas, 15-12, 15-11, in the Round of 16.

Two matches did go to a tie-breaker. Eighth seed Natalia Mendez held on to defeat 9th seed Carla Muñoz, 15-5, 1-15, 11-2, so Mendez will play LPRT #1 Montserrat Mejia in the quarters, as Mendez beat 16th seed Lexi York, 15-3, 15-3.

Also, 5th seed Alexandra Herrera fought back from a game down to beat 12th seed Jessica Parrilla, 12-15, 15-13, 11-4. Herrera will play 4th seed Maria José Vargas in the quarters, as she defeated 13th seed Cristina Amaya, 15-8, 15-5.

Semi-final Friday at 2023 IRF World Junior Championships

Bolivian Camila Rivero will play for gold in two divisions Saturday at the 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Tarija, Bolivia, as she’s in the finals of Girls U21 Singles and U18 Singles. In the U21 semi-finals, Rivero beat Mexican Leonela Osorio, 11-6, 11-4, 11-1, and will play Argentina’s Martina Katz in the final, as Katz defeated Ecuador’s Ana Lucia Sarmiento, 11-4, 11-3, 11-7.

In the Girls U18 semis, Rivero took out the USA’s Naomi Ros in three straight games, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6, and will play team-mate Kristin Salinas in the final, after Salinas beat Mexican Angela Ortega, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5.

Two young men will try to triple medal in U21 on Saturday, as Mexican Diego Gastelum and Bolivia’s Luis Aguilar face off in the Boys U21 Singles final, and the Boys U21 Doubles final as well as the U21 Mixed Doubles final. In the singles semi-finals, Gastelum had to come from 0-2 down to defeat Bolivian Jhoel Alexis Acha Portugal, 2-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, while Aguilar needed four games to beat Chilean Jaime Mansilla, 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9.

In the doubles semis, Gastelum and Oscar Elias Nieto Validez saw off the Ecuador team of Josue Bermeo and Esteban De Janon, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9, while Aguilar and Adrian Jaldin Lobo came back from a game down to defeat Americans Iain Dunn and Paul Saraceno, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6.

Then in U21 Mixed Doubles, it’ll be Aguilar and Micaela Meneses versus Gastelum and Maria Gutierrez in Saturday’s final. In the semi-finals, Bolivia defeated Ecuador’s Esteban De Janon and Ana Lucia Sarmiento, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6, and Mexico beat Chilean siblings Jaime Nicolas Mansilla and Paula Javiera Mansilla, 11-6, 13-11, 11-7.

Mexican Eder Renteria is also going for triple gold Saturday, as he’s in the U16 singles, doubles and mixed doubles finals. In Boys U16 Singles, Renteria beat Martin Carchi of Ecuador, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8. He’ll face Bolivian Marco Mamani Aguilar in the final, as Aguilar defeated Mexico’s Nicolas Galindo, 11-1, 8-11, 11-8, 11-2.

In Boys U16 Doubles, Renteria and Galindo beat Chile’s Benjamin Andre Aguirre Fuentes and Ruben Igor, 11-9, 11-1, 11-2, in the semi-finals, and they’ll face Bolivia in the final, as Bolivians Marco Mamani Aguilar and Bismarck Pereira held on to eke out a win over Carchi and Juan David Zea Cueva of Ecuador, 11-3, 11-13, 11-3, 9-11, 11-9.

Finally, in the U16 Mixed Doubles final, Renteria and Yanna Salazar will also take on Bolivia. In the semis, Mexico beat the USA’s Eshan Ali and Sonya Shetty, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, while Bolivans Gabriela Diaz Fernández and Marco Antonio Vedia Rosales defeated Canadians Raphël Guillemette and Chloé Jauvin, 11-5, 12-10, 11-7.

Overall, there are will be 14 finals on Saturday (the Girls U16 Doubles is a round robin, so it doesn’t have a final), and here’s the country by country breakdown.

You might think that Bolivia has a big advantage playing at home, as they are in 13 of the 14 finals, but Mexico with 11 finals isn’t far behind. This is just confirming what you likely already knew: Bolivia and Mexico currently dominate international racquetball.

2023 LPRT Turkey Shoot Preview

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) rolls into Chicago-land this weekend for the LPRT Turkey Shoot tournament at the fabled Glass Court Club in Lombard, Illinois. There are 18 players in the tournament, which is just the second of the 2023-24 LPRT season.

Although it’s a small field, 15 of the 18 players in the Illinois are in the top 17, which includes the top 6 players, led by LPRT #1 Montserrat Mejia, #2 Paola Longoria, who won gold in Women’s Singles at last month’s Pan American Games, #3 Brenda Laime, and #4 Maria Jose Vargas, who earned four medals at the Pan Am Games.

Given the depth of the field, there will be some good matches right off the top. For example, Natalia Mendez and Carla Muñoz will square off in the 8/9 match with the winner likely facing Mejia in the 16s. Also, lefty Alexandra Herrera will play fellow Mexican Jessica Parrilla and that winner will play the winner of Vargas and Cristina Amaya.

On the bottom of the draw, veteran Mexican Samantha Salas plays US Team member Kelani Lawrence, with the winner to likely face Longoria in the quarterfinals.

Finally, Brenda Laime plays Hollie Scott, with the winner of that to face the winner of Erika Manilla and Valeria Centellas.

They are also playing doubles this weekend, and there will be some good matches in that as well.

You can watch the action live from Illinois via the LPRT YouTube channel. Play begins Friday morning with a couple matches in the Round of 32 and the Round of 16 in the afternoon, and continues through to the final on Sunday at 11 AM. All times Central.

Upsets at the 2023 IRF World Junior Racquetball Championships

Big upset on day two of the medal round at the 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Tarija, Bolivia, and it came in Girls U21 Singles, as Ecuador’s Ana Lucia Sarmiento defeated the top seed Micaela Meneses of Bolivia, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 18-16. Sarmiento lost in the U21 Round of 16 last year, while Meneses was the back to back Girls U18 champion, but in her first year of U21, she won’t make the podium, which is a big surprise.

In the semi-finals, Sarmiento will face Argentine left-hander Martina Katz, who beat Sarmiento’s Ecuador team-mate, Fabiana Landy in three straight games, 11-4, 11-3, 11-8.

The other semi will be between the 2nd and 3rd seeds. Bolivian Camila Rivero, the 2nd seeds, defeated 10th seed Jazmin Elizabeth Aguilar Salvatierra of Guatemala, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, while Mexican Leonela Osorio, the 3rd seed, needed four games to get past Alejandra Jimenez of the Dominican Republic, 11-3, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8.

The most interesting division

We called the Girls U18 Doubles division the most interesting division in Tarija, and those semi-finals didn’t disappoint. The Mexican team of Ivanna Balderrama and Cynthia Gutierrez, who were 3-0 in the pool play stage of the event, lost to the USA team of Heather Mahoney and Naomi Ros in five games, 11-3, 5-11, 9-11, 11–7, 13-11. It was a match that seemed more down to who would make the fewest errors, although the winning shot was nice, as Mahoney dove forward for the ball and hit a wide pass to the right side that went into the back court, eluding the Mexicans.

The other semi-final went to four games with Bolivians Rebecca Amaya and Valeria Miranda Martinez coming out on top against Guatemalans Andrea Reyes Perez and Anna Paula Aguilar Salvatierra, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9. In the pool play, Bolivia beat the USA in four games, but who knows what will happen when they play a re-match for gold?

The top seed also lost out in the semi-finals of Girls U18 Singles, as 8th seed Naomi Ros (USA) defeated 1st seed Cynthia Gutierrez (Mexico), 13-11, 11-6, 11-8, so Ros got the better of Gutierrez twice on Thursday: in singles and doubles. Ros will play 4th seed Camilla Riveros of Bolivia in the semis Friday, as Riveros beat Guatemalan Jazmin Aguilar, 11-0, 11-2, 11-1.

There were upsets in boys matches too. In fact, the top seed in Boys U18 Singles went out in the quarterfinals, as 8th seed Luis Renteria of Mexico came back from a game down to defeat 1st seed Ezequiel Subieta of Bolivia, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-5. Renteria will play Costa Rican Antonio Sanchez in the semi-finals Friday, as 4th seed Sanchez beat the USA’s DJ Mendoza in four games, 11-9, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5.

In Boys U18 Doubles, 7th seeds Vedant Chauhan and Cole Sendrey of the USA upset 2nd seeds Jose Caceras and Hector Sierra Mansilla of Guatemala, 10-12, 13-11, 11-6, 11-7. The USA will play 3rd seeds Costa Rica in the semi-finals, as Oscar Montejo and Antonio Sanchez defeated the Dominican Republic’s Esleiker Gomez and Alexander Mateo, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9.

Medal rounds begin at 2023 IRF World Junior Racquetball Championships

The medal round began on Wednesday at the 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Tarija, Bolivia. There haven’t been many upsets so far, and some of the top seeds haven’t been in action yet.

However, in a close match in Girls U21 Singles, 10th seed Jazmin Elizabeth Aguilar Salvatierra of Guatemala defeated 7th seed Maria Gutierrez of Mexico, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9. Salvatierra will play 2nd seed Camila Rivero of Bolivia in the quarterfinals.

In Boys U21 Singles, Canadian Naman Gauri, the 12th seed, beat 5th seed Esteban De Janon Calderon of Ecuador, 13-11, 11-9, 11-8, and will play the winner of 4th seed Jhoel Alexis Acha Portugal of Bolivia and 13th seed Juan Segovia of Colombia.

In Girls U18 Singles, 10th seed Anna Paula Aguilar Salvatierra of Guatemala and 7th seed Paula Mansilla of Chile had a marathon match with Salvatierra came out on top, winning 11-5, 6-11, 5-11, 11-6, 13-11. She’ll play 2nd seed Kristin Salinas of Bolivia in the quarterfinals.

Guatemalans played off in the Boys U18 Singles Round of 16 with 10th seed Jose Caceras getting the better of 7th seed Hector Sierra Mansilla, 13-11, 11-7, 11-6. Caceras will play 2nd seed Jorge Gutierrez Ortiz of Mexico in the quarterfinals, as Ortiz beat 15th seed Joaquin Benalcazar of Ecuador, 11-1, 11-1, 11-0.

There was also a tie-breaker in Boys U16 Singles between Costa Rican Gabriel Matamoros, the 10th seed, and 7th seed Raphel Guillemette of Canada, with Matamoros coming out on top, 11-9, 11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4. He’ll play 2nd seed Marco Mamani Aguilar of Bolivia in the quarterfinals, as Aguilar beat 15th Christian Aldana of Guatemala, 11-5, 11-2, 11-0.

Pick ‘em divison

The most interesting division might be Girls U18 Doubles, which has four teams, and through the round robin, the Mexican team of Ivanna Balderrama and Cynthia Gutierrez are 3-0, and the other teams are all 1-2. But the Mexicans haven’t been blowing the other teams away. Far from it.

They defeated the USA team of Heather Mahoney and Naomi Ros in five games, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 15-17, 11-4. Their wins over the other two teams were in three games, but against the Bolivians Rebecca Amaya and Valeria Miranda Martinez it was three 2 point games, 14-12, 11-9, 11-9, and against Guatemalans Andrea Reyes Perez and Anna Paula Aguilar Salvatierra, it was two 2 point games and a 3 point game, 12-10, 11-8, 12-10.

So, the Mexicans aren’t having landslide victories, and with the other teams all beating up on each other, who knows what’s going to happen in the playoffs.

2023 IRF World Juniors - Group play summary

Play is underway at the 34th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships in Tarija, Bolivia. The tournament format that has been followed for many years has three days of pool play that began on Saturday followed by the medal round.

Reminder that the World Cup divisions are now U21, U18 and U16, following introduction of the U21 division last year. We’re on board with this addition, and these are the divisions that we’ll cover, although there are younger players competing in Tarija.

The other new thing is that mixed doubles is included in all age divisions. This is in line with the introduction of mixed doubles at the IRF World Championships. There had been mixed doubles at World Juniors in the past, but not for many years.

We’re assuming that there will be live streaming from Bolivia, but likely not until the beginning of the medal round. Check out the IRF YouTube channel or the IRF Facebook page for the action.

Parrilla wins 2023 IRT Rally for our Warriors

Andree Parrilla defeated Jake Bredenbeck, 11-15, 15-11, 11-10, in the final of the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) Rally for our Warriors tournament Saturday in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Parrilla hadn’t been past the quarterfinals since February, so this ended a drought for him, as he reached his first final since May of last year, and got his first win since January of 2022, which was over Kane Waselenchuk, and also went to 11-10 in the tie-breaker.

To be clear, Parrilla has plenty of power and Bredenbeck can shoot the ball. But like most players, their play is geared toward one thing more than the other (we wrote about player types a few years ago).

Game one was all Bredenbeck, as he led from 2-1 on, including at 14-6. Parrilla scored five straight points to get within four at 14-11, so Bredenbeck called a timeout.

On the ensuing rally, Bredenbeck hit a forehand reverse pinch winner to get back in the service box. On the next rally he hit a winning forehand down the left side to close out the game, 15-11.

The story was reversed in game two, as Parrilla led early, at 6-3, 8-4, and 9-6. But Bredenbeck came back and tied it at 9-9, and then went ahead to lead 11-9.

However, Parrilla tied it and then went ahead with two almost identical shots to the front right corner, which is Parrilla’s favourite place to hit the ball. He made an unforced error on the following rally, skipping a forehand shot that put Bredenbeck back in the service box.

Parrilla got the service right back, as Bredenbeck drove serve to the left side with Parrilla returning it with a backhand cross court winner. Bredenbeck put Parrilla on 13 when he skipped a forehand reverse pinch, which seems to be a shot Bredenbeck likes a lot, as he hit several of them in this match.

A great Parrilla backhand pinch shot got him to game point at 14-11. Bredenbeck fought off that first game point by jumping Parrilla’s Z serve to the left, positioning himself with his back close to the left side wall, so he could drive a forehand down the line for a winner.

Bredenbeck didn’t score any points, however, as Parrilla forced him into a backhand skip on the next rally. On his second game point, Parrilla hit a backhand pinch winner to end the game at 15-11.

Often when players split close games, the tie-breaker is not close. But not so in this match, as they were tied four times, and the largest lead was 3 points, which happened late, when Parrilla was up 10-7.

At 10-7, Parrilla had a chance at his favorite shot: a forehand to the right corner, but skipped it. He got the serve right back by hitting a forehand serve return winner off a Bredenbeck drive serve to the right side.

On Parrilla’s second match point, Bredenbeck hit the shot of the match. They’d exchanged five ceiling balls, but then Bredenbeck hit a forehand pinch shot from head high that flat rolled out of the front right corner. The crowd was amazed.

He followed that up with two more forehand winners, so Parrilla called timeout, leading 10-9. However, on the next rally Parrilla skipped a backhand shot, and that unforced error tied the game at 10-10. Parrilla stopped Bredenbeck’s first match point by hitting a forehand reverse pinch from his knees to the left corner.

This great match came to an end with a whimper, as Parrilla hit a lob serve to the left that nicked off the side wall, so Bredenbeck turned to take it with his forehand, and looked to be hitting a forehand pinch shot. But it skipped, giving Parrilla the game, 11-10, and the match, 2-1.

The win is Parrilla’s 3rd career IRT victory, and ties him with Alvaro Beltran. He’s the fourth different player to win this season, joining Daniel De La Rosa (3 wins), Conrrado Moscoso (3), Rodrigo Montoya (1) and Bredenbeck (1).

The IRT will next be in action at the end of the month when the Tournament of Champions happens in Portland, Oregon, November 30-December 2, and they’ll follow that up with the Golden State Open in Pleasanton, California, December 7-10, which will bring the 2023 season to an end.

Bredenbeck & Parrilla face off in final of 2023 IRT Rally for our Warriors

Jake Bredenbeck and Andree Parrilla will meet in the final of the International Racquetball Tour’s (IRT’s) Rally for our Warriors tournament Saturday evening in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Bredenbeck stopped Kane Waselenchuk’s march through the draw, as he defeated the former IRT #1 in three games, 12-15, 15-14, 11-4, in the semi-finals. In the other semi, Parrilla beat the current IRT #1 Daniel De La Rosa, 15-14, 15-13.

It looked like Waselenchuk would make the final on his return to IRT action after suffering an Achilles injury last fall, as he was up 12-5 in game two, after winning the first game. However, Bredenbeck came back to tie it at 12-12, and then went ahead 14-12.

That made it Waselenchuk’s turn to come back, as he fought off game points, and scored twice himself to tie the game at 14-14. Bredenbeck called a timeout. When play resumed, he hit a forehand winner down the line, and then got a service winner with a drive jam serve off the left wall that Waselenchuk turned to play as it came off the back wall. However, the ball hit Waselenchuk, giving Bredenbeck the game winning point.

After two close games, usually the tie-breaker is not close, and so it was in this match, as Bredenbeck jumped out to a 7-0 lead. During that run Waselenchuk picked up a knock to his right leg, so he called for an injury timeout at that point.

When play continued, Waselenchuk got the serve back after Bredenbeck committed an unforced error by skipping a forehand shot. He lob served, standing by the right wall, hitting over to the back left corner. Waselenchuk seemed to not want to drive serve given his injury, and he didn’t drive serve in the remainder of the match.

But Waselenchuk did score some points, especially with his backhand. However, his movement was clearly compromised. Despite that Bredenbeck didn’t seem to make any adjustments in his play, and it seemed like the game could have been ended sooner than it was if he had.

The end did come as Bredenbeck made a great overhead forehand pinch winner that put him on match point at 10-4. He drove serve to the left on the next rally. Waselenchuk hit a forehand return that Bredenbeck rekilled for the winning point, making it 11-4.

Word is that Waselenchuk hadn’t played until the last three weeks, so he’s undoubtedly not ‘match fit,’ which could have contributed to him coming up short against Bredenbeck. But this tournament suggests that he can still be a threat to win on the tour, and Waselenchuk isn't one to take defeats lightly. There are two more tournaments this year, and assuming the knock Waselenchuk picked up isn't serious, we're sure he'll be back in training to win those.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Waselenchuk beat Conrrado Moscoso, who had won gold in Men’s Singles at the Pan American Games last month, 15-8, 15-6. The Pan Am Games was an intense competition with a lot of racquetball in a short period, and of the semi-finalists in Marlborough, only De La Rosa was at Pan Ams.

All four players who lost in the quarterfinals were at Pan Ams. In the other quarters, Daniel De La Rosa narrowly defeated Andrés Acuña, 15-14, 15-14. Parrilla held on to see off Rodrigo Montoya, 15-9, 11-15, 11-7, and Bredenbeck came back to defeat Samuel Murray, 12-15, 15-14, 11-4.
