Vargas wins 33rd Annual LPRT Christmas Classic

Maria José Vargas won the latest edition of one of the longest running Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) events this weekend: the 33rd Annual LPRT Christmas Classic in Millersville, Maryland. She defeated Paola Longoria in the final, 15-6, 15-12, and had a chance to win doubles as well, but Alexandra Herrera and Montserrat Mejia beat Vargas and Valeria Centellas in the doubles final, 15-9, 15-6.

Vargas’s win further confirms her as the LPRT’s #1 player, and she’s now won three of the four events this season, and has 15 titles in her career.

In the final, Vargas was dominant in game one, taking leads of 5-0, 7-1, and 11-2, as she took it 15-6.

In game two, Longoria led early at 4-0, and 7-3. But Vargas won nine of the next ten points to lead 12-8. Longoria did come back and tie it at 12-12, so Vargas called a timeout.

When play resumed, Longoria skipped a backhand pinch shot that put Vargas back in the service box. She hit a drive serve ace to go back ahead, 13-12. A Vargas backhand kill shot made it 14-12.

On the first game point, Vargas drove serve to the left side, and it came off the back wall, so Longoria hit a backhand shot over to the right side that she believed hit Vargas on the way to the front wall.

Thus, Longoria stopped playing, while Vargas hit the ball over to the left side. The referee didn’t see the ball hit Vargas, so Longoria appealed for referee’s call, but it was upheld by the line judges. Thus, Vargas won the rally, and got the match ending point to win game two, 15-12.

Although it was a weird end to the match, Vargas was fully deserving of the victory. She has improved her game from being primarily a power player to become a player that can shoot the ball very well also.

Vargas won the season ending #1 player in 2023-24, and she looks likely to regain that title this season, taking it from Longoria, who won it last season.

Mejia wins twice at 2025 LPRT Mile High Open

Montserrat Mejia was a double winner at the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Mile High Open in Denver, Colorado, Saturday, when she won both singles and doubles. In the singles final, she defeated LPRT #1 Maria José Vargas, 15-11, 8-15, 11-8, and then, for the doubles final, teamed up with Alexandra Herrera to beat Vargas and Valeria Centellas, 15-8, 15-14.

The win is Mejia’s first since June, when she defeated Paola Longoria at the Northern Virginia Invitational, and it ended Vargas’s three tournament winning streak.

The singles final was hard fought, and looked like it was going to go the other way. After winning game two to force a tie-breaking third game, Vargas took a 7-1 lead in that game, and looked like she was going to complete the come back.

But Vargas got stalled at that point, as they played nine rallies without scoring. During that stretch, she hit Mejia on a serve return, as Mejia hit a drive Z serve to the right side that Vargas took early, trying to hit a forehand cross court shot. Adding insult to injury, an avoidable was called against Mejia.

Mejia was clearly upset about being hit at that point, as it was the third time it had happened in the match. Although she didn’t immediately start scoring points after that incident, it’s easy to imagine that Mejia found some extra motivation from it.

When the points did come, they came quickly, as Mejia got 8 points from 11 rallies, including a drive serve ace to the left side, which was her 4th ace of the match, to lead 9-7. Vargas did get the next point, but momentum had clearly switched sides, as it was 26 rallies between Vargas’s 7th point and her 8th.

Mejia finished off the breaker on her first match point, as she hit another drive serve ace to the left side that cracked out just past the short line, to win game three 11-8.

It was a long match overall, and especially game three, which was almost as long as either of the first two games. Game three had 49 rallies after there were 52 rallies in game one and 50 in game two.

Herrera and Mejia got off to a great start in the doubles final, as they went up 6-0 in game one. They maintained their lead throughout that game, as Centellas and Vargas didn’t get closer than three points, at 7-4 and 10-7. Herrera and Mejia went on to win 15-8.

Game two was close all the way, and much longer. Game one had 50 rallies, while game two had 73. Herrera and Mejia were generally ahead, although the lead was never more than two points, and Centellas and Vargas even lead at 9-8.

But Herrera and Mejia then got five unanswered points, including four on as many rallies, as they took their largest lead at 13-9. Centellas and Vargas called a timeout.

When play resumed, Centellas and Vargas got the serve back, and scored a point of their own. But then surrendered the serve again. Centellas then skipped a backhand down the line shot that put Herrera and Mejia on match point at 14-10.

However, Centellas hit back to back winners to get her side the serve back. Another Centellas winner made the score 14-11. They got three more points to tie the game at 14-14, after Centellas hit a drive serve ace to Herrera on the left side.

On their first game point, Centellas and Vargas gave up the serve, as Centellas was forced into trying to save the rally with a back wall shot that didn’t make it back to the front wall.

They fought off Herrera and Mejia’s third match point, as Vargas hit a forehand pinch shot. But on the next rally, Herrera hit a forehand cross court shot that Vargas unsuccessfully tried to save off the back wall, so Herrera and Mejia won game two, 15-14, and the match in two straight games.

In the doubles semi-finals earlier on Saturday, Herrera and Mejia beat Brenda Laime and Natalia Mendez, 15-14, 15-5, while Centellas and Vargas needed a tie-breaker to fend off Sheryl Lotts and Lexi York, 15-6, 10-15, 11-7.

Vargas vs Mejia in 2025 LPRT Mile High Open final

Number 1 will be play #2 Saturday in the final of the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Mile High Open in Denver, Colorado, where LPRT #1 Maria José Vargas will play 2nd seed Montserrat Mejia. Vargas is going for her fourth straight LPRT tournament win.

Both semi-finals on Friday went to tie-breakers. Vargas held on to beat 5th seed Brenda Laime, 15-1, 7-15, 11-2, while Mejia came back from a game down to defeat 3rd seed Gabriela Martinez, 8-15, 15-7, 11-7.

In doubles, all the quarterfinal matches on Friday were won in two straight games, although there was one slight upset as 5th seeds Sheryl Lotts and Lexi York defeated 4th seeds Cristina Amaya and Jessica Parrilla, 15-8, 15-12. That win sets up a match with the top seeds Valeria Centellas and Vargas, who beat veterans Susana Acosta and Nancy Enriquez, 15-4, 15-7, in the quarters.

The other semi has 2nd seeds Laime and Natalia Mendez against 3rd seeds Alexandra Herrera and Mejia. In the quarters, Laime and Mendez beat veterans Carla Muñoz and Rhonda Rajsich, 15-4, 15-11, while Herrera and Mejia defeated Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez, 15-9, 15-13.

Laime defeats Mendez at 2025 LPRT Mile High Open

The quarterfinal results at the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Mile High Open in Denver, Colorado Friday morning were relatively straightforward, as the top three seeds all won in two straight games. But 5th seed Brenda Laime upset 4th seed Natalia Mendez in three games, 15-9, 10-15, 11-6.

Laime will play LPRT #1 Maria José Vargas in the semi-finals Friday afternoon, as Vargas defeated 8th seed Valeria Centellas, 15-9, 15-11. Centellas played well, and was tied with Vargas at 11-11 late in game two, but couldn’t force the match to a tie-breaker.

In the other semi, 2nd seed Montserrat Mejia will take on 3rd seed Gabriela Martinez. Mejia beat 10th seed Sheryl Lotts, 15-6, 15-7, in the quarters, while Martinez defeated 6th seed Alexandra Herrera, 15-7, 15-14.

2025 LPRT Mile High Open begins

The 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) is back in action this weekend with the 2025 LPRT Mile High Open in Denver, Colorado. Maria José Vargas will try to win a 4th straight LPRT event, having won both events this season and the final event of last season.

Vargas is the LPRT #1, and leads the 22 player field this weekend that includes 15 of the top 18 LPRT players. Rounding out the top four seeds are Montserrat Mejia, Gabriela Martinez and Natalia Mendez as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds, respectively.

Play began Thursday with the Rounds of 32 and 16. There was only one upset in the 16s, as 10th seed Sheryl Lotts defeated 7th seed Cristina Amaya, due to an injury forfeit. Lotts won the first game 15-6 and was ahead 10-2 in game two, when Amaya called it a day. It didn’t look like she got injured on the last rally of the game, but perhaps there was something nagging her that caused Amaya to stop playing.

All the other matches were won in two straight games, including Vargas’s defeat of 17th seed Erika Manilla, 15-5, 15-9. She’ll play Valeria Centellas in the quarterfinals Friday, as Centellas beat 9th seed Jessica Parrilla, 15-12, 15-8, on Thursday.

That quarterfinal will be a battle of doubles partners, as Vargas and Centellas are the top seeds in the doubles draw. Brenda Laime and Mendez are the 2nd seeds.

The early highlight of the doubles draw is 3rd seeds Alexandra Herrera and Mejia versus Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez, which is a quarterfinal match that's worthy of a final.

Play begins early Friday with the singles quarterfinals kicking off at 9 AM. The semi-finals will be Friday afternoon with the singles final at 3 PM Saturday. The doubles action begins Friday afternoon with the semi-finals Friday evening and the doubles final Saturday at 5 PM. All times Mountain. Vargas defeats Longoria to claim Golden State Open title

Maria José Vargas defeated Paola Longoria, 15-8, 15-8, to win the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Golden State Open on Sunday. Vargas has won both of the LPRT events this season, and three straight overall going back to the final event of last season.

In the semi-finals, LPRT #1 Longoria defeated #4 Gabriela Martinez, 9-15, 15-10, 11-6, while Vargas, the LPRT’s #2 player, beat #3 Montserrat Mejia, 15-7, 15-9.

Although the scores in the final weren’t that close, the games were hard fought, especially the first one, which lasted 58 rallies. Game two had 42 rallies.

Longoria got the first two points of the match, and Vargas the next five. But they were still at 5-2 after 21 rallies.

Vargas extended her lead to 11-3 and then 14-4. Longoria fought off the first game point, and then scored four straight points, including hitting two drive serve aces to the left side, making the score 14-8.

A Vargas backhand winner stopped that streak, but Longoria denied Vargas’s second game point. However, Vargas got the serve right back, and closed out the game with another backhand winner.

Vargas got the first three points of game two, and extended that lead to 8-2, and then 14-4. Again, Longoria fought off the first game point, and scored four of her own to cut the lead to 14-8.

But that was just delaying the seemingly inevitable, as Vargas got the serve back with a forehand winner, and then won it on the second game point with a backhand winner.

They played Mixed Doubles in Pleasanton, and 3rd seeds Martinez and Conrrado Moscoso upset top seeds Javier Mar and Mejia, 14-15, 15-10, 11-2. In the semi-finals, Martinez and Moscoso beat 10th seeds Adam Manilla and Erika Manilla, 15-5, 15-8, while Mar and Mejia defeated 5th seeds Andree Parrilla and Jessica Parrilla, 15-6, 15-10.

Vargas wins singles, Longoria & Moscoso Mixed Doubles in Colorado

Maria José Vargas won the first event of the 2025-26 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) season, as she defeated Paola Longoria, 15-8, 11-15, 11-0, in the final of the World Singles and Doubles Open Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Longoria did win the Mixed Doubles event, however, as she and Conrrado Moscoso came back from a game down to defeat surprise finalists Rocky Carson and Michelle Key, 9-15, 15-4, 11-5.

In the singles final, Vargas led for much of the first two games. She got the lead in game one at 2-1, and went on to win 15-8, hitting a drive serve ace to the right side to win it. Then in game two, Vargas led 5-1, and 11-8, but Longoria came back to tie it at 11-11.

Vargas called a timeout at that point, but to no avail, as Longoria got four straight points to close out game two, 15-11, and force a tie-breaker.

It was all Vargas in the breaker. She took a 4-0 lead, and Longoria called timeout. Vargas extended that lead to 8-0, and Longoria called another timeout. Neither of those timeouts led to any points, and Vargas got to match point with a drive Z serve ace to the left side. She won it, when Longoria skipped a forehand shot on the next rally.

In the semi-finals, Longoria needed three games to defeat 5th seed Natalia Mendez, 15-10, 2-15, 11-1, while Vargas beat 3rd seed Montserrat Mejia in two close games, 15-13, 15-13.

In the Mixed Doubles final, Carson and Key had a clearer plan of attack than Longoria and Moscoso, and it was almost enough to carry the day. They played a front and back formation with Key up front and Carson in back, while Longoria and Moscoso played a more common left-right formation with Longoria on the right and Moscoso on the left. There were more times when Longoria and Moscoso were both going for the same ball than Carson and Key did.

Longoria and Moscoso did have more experience together than Carson and Key, as they won this event two years ago, while Carson and Key hadn’t played together before. But both are veterans, and they made an impressive run to the final.

In the semi-finals, Carson and Key, who were seeded 15th, upset 3rd seeds Alexandra Herrera and Eduardo Portillo, 15-12, 14-15, 11-5. Their quarterfinal may have been even more impressive, as they came back from a game down to defeat former International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champions Rodrigo Montoya and Samantha Salas, 6-15, 15-7, 11-4.

For their part, Longoria and Moscoso won a back and forth quarterfinal match against 9th seeds Gerson Miranda Martinez and Vargas, 15-6, 4-15, 11-3, and then narrowly defeated 4th seeds Javier Mar and Montserrat Mejia, 15-14, 14-15, 11-9, in the semis to reach the final.

Top three LPRT seeds into the semis in Colorado

Three of the top four Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) seeds are into the semi-finals at the World Singles and Doubles Open Championships in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, site of the first LPRT event of the 2025-26 season. Top seed Paola Longoria, 2nd seed Maria José Vargas and 3rd seed Montserrat Mejia are into the semis, but 4th seed Alexandra Herrera is not, as she lost to 13th seed Carla Muñoz in the Round of 16, 5-15, 15-12, 11-7.

However, in the quarterfinals, Muñoz lost to 5th seed Natalia Mendez, 15-10, 15-2, which sets up a semi-final with top seed Longoria, who beat 8th seed Samantha Salas, 15-2, 15-3, in the quarters. Salas got the first three points of game two, and then Longoria scored 15 unanswered points.

In the other quarterfinals, Vargas defeated 7th seed Cristina Amaya, 15-8, 15-4, and Mejia beat 6th seed Brenda Laime, 15-4, 15-5.

Among the other matches, Naomi Ros’s loss to Longoria is notable, as the young American took a game off what many people consider to the best women’s player of all time. Longoria won their Round of 16 match, 15-3, 11-15, 11-3.

They are also playing Mixed Doubles in Colorado, and there was a big upset in the Round of 16, as American veterans Rocky Carson and Michelle Key, the 15th seeds, defeated the 2nd seeded Chilean team of Carla Muñoz and Alan Natera, 15-10, 15-7. Carson and Key will next face the former International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championship team of Rodrigo Montoya and Samantha Salas in the quarterfinals.

In another upset, the brother/sister combination of Adam and Erika Manilla, the 12th seeds, beat 5th seeds Natalia Mendez and Andree Parrilla, 15-8, 15-5, to set up a quarterfinal match against 4th seeds Javier Mar and Montserrat Mejia, who defeated 13th seeds Edwin Galicia and Maria Renee Rodriguez, 15-8, 15-11, in the Round of 16.

Final LPRT rankings for 2024-25

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) final rankings for 2024-25 have been released. Paola Longoria is the #1 player for the 14th time in her career, but the first since 2021-22. Montserrat Mejia and Maria Jose Vargas, who have finished #1 in the last two seasons, tied for the #2 position behind Longoria.

Longoria has been in the top 10 for 18 seasons, 3rd most all time behind Rhonda Rajsich’s 22 and Cheryl Gudinas’s 21. Interestingly, Longoria’s ratio of top 10s to #1s is 18:14 or 9:7, which is exactly Michelle Gould’s ratio, as she had 9 top 10 seasons with 7 seasons at #1. Gould’s seven #1s are second most all time behind Longoria.

The four other active players have been in the top 10 for at least 10 seasons: Vargas and Cristina Amaya with 12 seasons each, Samantha Salas with 11, and Alexandra Herrera with 10.

Salas narrowly missed out on a 12th career top 10 this season, as she was just three points behind Amaya, who was 10th.

The points difference between 12th and 13th and 16th and 17th was even less. Valeria Centellas was 12th, just one point ahead of Lexi York, and Carla Muñoz was only 1/2 point ahead of Maria Renee Rodriguez for 16th.

Doubles

The top three in the doubles rankings are also close with about 10 points separating Maria Jose Vargas in #1 and Brenda Laime in #3 with Montserrat Mejia between them at #2. Vargas was in six of the seven doubles finals in 2024-25, but she only won once, while Laime won four doubles titles and Mejia won three titles. Thus, it’s a bit curious that Vargas is top, but the points are close, and her six finals are more than Laime’s four and Mejia’s three.

This season was different from 2023-24, when Mejia and Alexandra Herrera were in all seven of the finals and they won six of them. Thus, they were the top two doubles players, but Herrera slipped down the rankings to 8th this season, in part because she missed two events.

Similarly, Paola Longoria didn’t play in three of the doubles events, so that’s partly why she’s 7th despite winning once and being in another final to go with two semi-final finishes.

The conclusion of the LPRT 2024-25 season

The 2024-25 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) season wrapped up over the past two weekends with events in Virginia and North Carolina. Montserrat Mejia won the Northern Virginia Invitational in Herndon, Virginia - the penultimate event of the season - and Maria Jose Vargas won the Sweet Caroline Open in Charlotte, North Carolina - the season’s last event.

Those wins were the second for both Mejia and Vargas this season. Paola Longoria also won twice this season with Gabriela Martinez winning the first event of the season last August.

2024-25 is the first women’s pro season with three multiple event winners since 2005-06, when Christie Huczek (née Van Hees) won three times and Cheryl Gudinas and Rhonda Rajsich won twice each. This was only the fifth season with three multiple event winners since 1980.

Four different winners is also relatively rare on tour, although it did happen two seasons ago, when Mejia won five times, Longoria three, and one win each by Martinez and Alexandra Herrera. Overall, only four women’s pro seasons have had four different winners.

Longoria, Martinez, Mejia and Vargas were the semi-finalists in both of the last two tournaments, although they flipped winners. There were two close semi-finals in Virginia, where Longoria defeated Martinez, 15-13, 15-14, and Mejia beat Vargas, 15-5, 12-15, 11-4. Then in North Carolina, Martinez beat Longoria, 15-3, 15-12, and Vargas defeated Mejia, 15-6, 3-15, 11-1.

In the finals, Mejia defeated Longoria, 15-13, 15-5, in Virginia, while Vargas beat Martinez, 15-8, 15-5, in North Carolina.

Vargas and Valeria Centellas were in both of the doubles finals the last two weeks. In Virginia, they defeated Longoria and Samantha Salas, 15-12, 15-7, while in North Carolina, they lost to Brenda Laime and Natalia Mendez, 15-11, 15-13.

Over the season, Vargas was in six of the seven doubles finals, twice with Mendez and three times with Centellas, but she only won once. Laime was in four doubles finals, and won all of them with three different partners: Mejia twice, and once each with Mendez and Michelle Key. Mejia was also a multiple doubles winner this season, taking three titles out of the three finals she played in, and did so with two different partners: twice with Laime and once with Herrera.

Longoria comes back to win 2025 LPRT Boston Open

Paola Longoria won the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Boston Open in Marlborough, Massachusetts on the weekend, defeating Montserrat Mejia, 12-15, 15-8, 11-10, in the final. Longoria has been in all five LPRT finals this season, but this is just her second win. The win solidifies Longoria as the LPRT’s #1 player.

In the semi-finals, Longoria beat 4th seed Alexandra Herrera, 15-9, 15-0, and Mejia upset 2nd seed Maria José Vargas, 15-8, 15-9.

Longoria had to come from a game down to win the final, and she trailed for most of game three, as Mejia had leads of 5-2, 7-3 and 10-5. At that point you could be excused for thinking that Mejia was going to defeat Longoria, as she had in the Arizona Open in January.

However, Longoria had other ideas. She fought off the first match point with a great backhand pinch return off a Mejia drive serve to the left. Longoria then ran off three points to make it 10-8, so Mejia called a timeout.

On the ensuing rally, Mejia stepped up to take a shot on the volley that she hammered to the left side for a winner and her second match point opportunity. But on that rally Mejia tried to hit a forehand pinch shot from deep in the court, and skipped it.

That was the first of a few questionable shot choices that contributed to Mejia’s loss. She skipped Longoria’s next serve - another Z serve to the left - which seemed like an unforced error, making it 10-9.

Mejia again tried a pinch shot from deep - a forehand reverse pinch as she ran around her backhand, which was left up, allowing Longoria to hit a winner to make it 10-10, setting up her first match point.

That was not a great rally. Longoria hit a Z serve to the left, and Mejia returned it with a loose down the line shot. Longoria’s shot was also a loose down the line shot, which gave Mejia an opportunity at the dashed line with Longoria right behind her.

She could have hit a backhand cross court or pinch shot, putting the ball away from Longoria, but instead Mejia went back down the line, which again wasn’t a great shot, and allowed Longoria to hit it cross court.

That ball came off the back wall, so Mejia was able to get to it, hitting a cross court in return. However, her ball went wide, coming off the left wall to a waiting Longoria, who bunted it down the left side for the match winner.

Longoria’s shot was also loose, but Mejia had to go around her to get to it, and couldn’t do so in time. It seemed like it could have been a hinder, but that wasn’t called, and Mejia - perhaps surprisingly - didn’t appeal for one.

Thus, a great match with a great tie-breaker comeback didn’t have a great ending.

Notably, four of the five LPRT singles finals have gone to tie-breaker this season.

Mejia and Alexandra Herrera won the doubles final, as they beat 3rd seeds Valeria Centellas and Maria Jose Vargas, 15-12, 15-5.

The semi-finals were both close matches, as Herrera and Mejia defeated 4th seeds Angelica Barrios and Brenda Laime, 15-13, 15-14, in two close games, and Centellas and Vargas eked out a win over 2nd seeds Natalia Mendez and Carla Muñoz, 15-7, 14-15, 11-10.

The LPRT has an outdoor event - the Eve Promotions Beach Bash - scheduled for March 20-23 in Hollywood Beach, Florida, but no further indoor events, so we’re unsure if the Boston Open is the last event of the 2024-25 season, or whether there will be any further events. Mejia wins first LPRT event of 2025

Montserrat Mejia won the 2025 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Arizona Open on the weekend in Tempe, Arizona, where she defeated Paola Longoria in the final, 15-8, 15-14. The win was Mejia’s first of the season, and her first since June 2023, when she finished as the #1 LPRT player.

However, last season Mejia didn’t win a tournament and fell back to #3. Midway through this season, Longoria is the #1 player. However, Mejia is the 4th player in 4 events to win this season along with Longoria and Maria Jose Vargas, who was #1 last season, and Gabriela Martinez.

Those were the four semi-finalists in Tempe, as Longoria defeated Martinez in one semi, 12-15, 15-8, 11-1, and Mejia beat Vargas, 15-7, 15-9, in the other.

Although Longoria didn’t win singles, she did win doubles, as she and long time partner Samantha Salas defeated Vargas and Valeria Centellas, 15-12, 15-10, in the final. In the semi-finals, Longoria and Salas beat Michelle Key and Natalia Mendez, 15-14, 15-8, while Centellas and Vargas upset top seeds Alexandra Herrera and Mejia, 15-11, 7-15, 11-10.

Longoria, Laime & Mejia win at 2024 LPRT Christmas Classic

Paola Longoria won the 2024 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Christmas Classic in Millersville, Maryland Sunday by defeating LPRT #1 Maria José Vargas, 15-9, 7-15, 11-4. It’s Longoria’s first win in six months, which probably felt like an eternity for the former #1 LPRT player and winningest woman in racquetball history.

Three different players have won the three LPRT events so far this season: Gabriela Martinez won the first in Colorado, Vargas the second in Illinois two weeks ago, and now Longoria, who has been in all three finals.

Brenda Laime has been in all three LPRT doubles finals this season, and she’s won them all. Today she and Montserrat Mejia, the 1st seeds, beat 7th seeds Michelle Key and Erika Manilla, 15-4, 15-10.

Prior to this season, Laime hadn’t won an LPRT doubles title. Now she’s won three: two with Mejia and one with Key.

The singles final was a lopsided one, as Longoria won big in game one, going up 12-3 and holding on to win 15-9. Then Vargas did the same in game two, winning 15-7.

Often when two games are split and not close, the tie-breaker is close, but that wasn’t the case today, as Longoria took a 7-1 lead in the breaker and held on to win relatively comfortably at 11-4.

The doubles final was interesting, as two weeks ago Laime and Key were on the same side, defeating Vargas and Natalia Mendez in the final after beating Mejia and Alexandra Herrera in the semi-finals. Today they were on different teams, but on the same side of the court: they both played the left side.

Laime won the battle on that side, as Key seemed to be a bit off with her game today. Laime’s good shooting contributed to Key’s misfortune. But also it seemed like Key was giving up a lot of space to Laime, which Laime took full advantage of with solid passing and pinch shots.

It was good to see Manilla’s return to action after her hip injury and surgery to correct it. Reportedly she’s feeling 90% of normal, but clearly she can still be a force on court even at less than 100%.

One v two in final of the 32nd Annual LPRT Christmas Classic

It’ll be 1 versus 2 in the singles final of the 2024 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Christmas Classic in Millersville, Maryland Sunday, when LPRT #1 Maria José Vargas takes on #2 Paola Longoria. Vargas had the more difficult semi-final match, as she came back from a game down against 4th seed Gabriela Martinez to eke out a win by the narrowest of margins: 9-15, 15-12, 11-10. By contrast Longoria beat LPRT #3 Montserrat Mejia in two straight games, 15-13, 15-5.

The doubles final will feature top seeds Brenda Laime and Mejia against 7th seeds Michelle Key and Erika Manilla. In the semi-finals, Laime and Mejia defeated 5th seeds Valeria Centellas and Carla Muñoz, 15-5, 15-11, while Key and Manilla beat 3rd seeds Kelani Lawrence and Samantha Salas, 15-10, 15-13.

Laime is undefeated in doubles this season, and will be trying to win a third consecutive LPRT doubles title. She won the first tournament of the season with Mejia, and the second tournament with Key.

After splitting their first two games, Vargas took a big lead in the breaker against Martinez, going up 7-1. She maintained that lead up to 10-8, but Martinez fought off that first match point with a forehand cross court kill shot.

Martinez followed that up with a forehand pinch winner, and then an amazing behind the back ceiling ball that fell right into the back left corner for a winner to tie the game at 10-10.

On her first match point, Martinez drove serve to the right side, and Vargas drove it back cross court for a winner, denying her opponent's chance at victory. Vargas then made good on her second match point drive serving to the right, and then hitting another forehand cross court winner after Martinez’s return came into the middle of the court.

Play begins at 2024 LPRT Christmas Classic

The Christmas Classic has been a traditional event on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) for several seasons, and this year’s 32nd Annual Christmas Classic, which kicked off in Millersville, Maryland today, is no exception. There are 24 players in the field, which has 16 of the top 18 LPRT players, including LPRT #1 Maria Jose Vargas, #2 Paola Longoria and #3 Montserrat Mejia, as well as the return of Erika Manilla, who has been out with an injury for several months.

There were some interesting matches in the early rounds. Frédérique Lambert, seeded 20th but formerly the #2 LPRT player, got the better of 13th seed Michelle Key, 15-6, 15-1, in the Round of 32, but her joy was short lived, as 4th seed Gabriela Martinez beat Lambert in the Round 16 by that same scoreline, 15-6, 15-1.

Three other upsets in the early rounds, as 11th seed Jessica Parrilla beat 6th seed Kelani Lawrence, 15-10, 15-11. Also, 9th seed Carla Muñoz defeated 8th seed Cristina Amaya in the 8/9 match, 10-15, 15-7, 11-6, and 19th seed Valeria Centellas beat 14th seed Stephanie Synhorst, 15-2, 15-4.

Parrilla will play 3rd seed Mejia in the quarterfinals Saturday, as Mejia defeated Centellas in the 16s, 15-10, 15-14. Also in the quarters, Muñoz will play top seed Vargas, who beat Manilla, 15-4, 15-8, in the 16s.

In doubles, top seeds Brenda Laime and Montserrat Mejia are through to the semi-finals after beating 8th seeds Frédérique Lambert and Jessica Parrilla, 15-4, 15-4. Laime is looking to win a third consecutive doubles title, the first of which she won with Mejia.

But to do it, she might have to beat Michelle Key, who she won her second title with, as Key and Manilla, the 7th seeds, knocked off 2nd seeds Natalia Mendez and Vargas, 15-7, 15-10. That win puts Key and Manilla in the semis against 3rd seeds Lawrence and Samantha Salas who came back from a game down to defeat 6th seeds Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez, 10-15, 15-11, 11-5. This is a rare time that Samantha Salas and Paola Longoria are at an LPRT event, and not playing doubles together.

In the other semi, Laime and Mejia will face 5th seeds Centellas and Muñoz who upset 4th seeds Amaya and Maria Paz Riquelme, 15-4, 15-7, in the quarters.

Play began Friday with the Rounds of 32 and 16, and continues through Saturday with the finals on Sunday morning. The singles quarterfinals are Saturday morning, with the semi-finals to go in the evening. The finals will be Sunday at 11 AM for singles and noon for doubles. All times central. Vargas wins singles, Key & Laime doubles at 2024 LPRT Turkey Shoot

Maria Jose Vargas, the #1 player on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT), held on to win the 2024 LPRT Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois, Sunday, as she defeated LPRT #2 Paola Longoria in the final, 15-8, 5-15, 11-4. However, she didn’t win twice, as in the doubles final Michelle Key and Brenda Laime beat Vargas and Natalia Mendez, 15-13, 15-4. The win was Laime’s second in a row, as she won the first doubles title of the season in Colorado with Montserrat Mejia, and, perhaps surprisingly, it was Key’s first LPRT doubles title in her 8th final.

Vargas also won last year’s Turkey Shoot tournament, and including that tournament she has won six of the last nine LPRT events, which is why she’s the #1 player on tour. She’s now won 11 LPRT titles, and that’s the 11th most wins all time, and second most among active players (assuming Rhonda Rajsich is not active). Longoria’s 113 wins are the most in LPRT history.

In doubles, Key and Laime, the 4th seeds, were clearly the dark horses in the doubles draw, as the top three teams - top seeds Mejia and Alexandra Herrera, 2nd seeds Mendez and Vargas and 3rd seeds Longoria and Samantha Salas - have all won multiple LPRT titles, while Key and Laime had one win between them.

And that one win was Laime’s with Mejia last time out. But Mejia has won eight of the last nine LPRT events (all with Herrera except for the one with Laime), so it’s easy to think that Laime’s win with Mejia was due to Mejia rather than Laime.

However, this weekend’s results suggest that wouldn’t be giving Laime her due, as she and Key knocked off both Mejia and Herrera in the semi-finals and then Mendez and Vargas in the final. Furthermore, they won both matches in straight games. Laime’s game style includes rekilling balls, and that’s a great skill to have in doubles.

Can Laime win three in a row? We won’t have to wait long to find out, as it’s only two weeks until the next LPRT event: the 32nd Annual Christmas Classic in Millersville, Maryland, December 6-8.

Laime & Vargas shine on Saturday at the 2024 LPRT Turkey Shoot

She’s only in one final, but Brenda Laime was the story of Saturday’s play at the 2024 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Turkey Shoot in Lombard, Illinois, as she knocked off the LPRT #3 Montserrat Mejia in the quarterfinals, 15-6, 15-5, and then pushed LPRT #2 Paola Longoria to an 11-10 tie-breaker before falling, 15-13, 12-15, 11-10, in a match that was just short of two hours long. Then in the doubles semi-finals with Michelle Key, she defeated top seeds Mejia and Alexandra Herrera, 15-14, 15-10.

LPRT #1 Maria Jose Vargas defeated Alexandra Herrera in the other semi-final, 15-7, 15-8, and will play Longoria in the singles final Sunday. Vargas is also in the doubles final, as she and Natalia Mendez, seeded 2nd, defeated 3rd seeds Longoria and Samantha Salas, 15-11, 15-12, to set up the showdown with 4th seeds Key and Laime.

In the Longoria-Laime tie-breaker, they were back and forth, as Laime led early at 4-1, but Longoria led in the middle at 8-5.

Laime then comeback to lead 9-8, and then 10-9. She thought she’d won it on her second match point, but her forehand shot was judged to have skipped and an appeal to the line judges didn’t change the call.

With a second chance, Longoria made no mistakes, as she hit a backhand winner to tie it at 10-10, and then a forehand winner to end the match, 11-10.

Close matches by no upsets at 2024 LPRT Turkey Shoot

There weren’t any upsets in the Round of 16 at the 2024 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Turkey Shoot, although there were a few tie-breakers, so some near upsets. But none of them involved LPRT #1 Maria Jose Vargas, who comfortably beat 17th seed Sheryl Lotts, 15-3, 15-3, in the Round of 16. She’ll play 8th seed Cristina Amaya in the quarterfinals, as Amaya won the battle of veterans with 9th seed Carla Muñoz, 15-12, 15-7.

LPRT #2 Paola Longoria needed a tie-breaker to defeat 15th seed Michelle Key, 15-11, 12-15, 11-3, in a match we thought could be interesting. She'll next play 7th seed Natalia Mendez, who beat 10th seed Samantha Salas, 15-4, 15-6, in a match that didn’t turn out to be as interesting as we thought it would be.

Fourth seed Alexandra Herrera needed to comeback from a game down to get past 20th seed Valeria Centellas, 10-15, 15-10, 11-6. Centellas got within one point of Herrera in the breaker at 6-5, but couldn’t pull off the upset. Herrera will play 5th seed Kelani Lawrence in the quarters, as she beat 12th seed Lexi York, 15-6, 15-10.

Finally, 3rd seed Montserrat Mejia comfortably defeated 14th seed Maria Paz Riquelme, 15-1, 15-3, and plays 6th seed Brenda Laime in the quarters, as Laime held on to defeat 11th seed Jessica Parrilla, 15-8, 14-15, 11-8.

The doubles quarterfinals also went according to form, although the two matches we thought would be close went to a tie-breaker. Fourth seeds Key and Laime came back from a game down to defeat 5th seeds Lawrence and Parrilla, 5-15, 15-7, 11-1. They’ll play top seeds Herrera and Mejia, who beat 8th seeds Lotts and York, 15-7, 15-2.

On the other side of the draw, 2nd seeds Mendez and Vargas needed three games to defeat 7th seeds Centellas and Muñoz, 15-6, 13-15, 11-3, and will play 3rd seeds Longoria and Salas, who were comfortable winners over 6th seeds Amaya and Riquelme, 15-1, 15-2.

Play continues Saturday morning with the quarterfinals Saturday morning at 10 AM with the semi-finals in the afternoon at 4 and 5 PM. The final will be Sunday at 11 AM. 2024 LPRT Chicago Turkey Shoot - Preview

The Chicago Turkey Shoot, which begins Friday in Lombard, Illinois, is the second event of the 2024-25 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) season. The field of 23 includes 17 of the top 20 LPRT players, led by LPRT #1 Maria Jose Vargas, #2 Paola Longoria, #3 Montserrat Mejia and #4 Alexandra Herrera.

Some interesting early matches to look for could be Natalia Mendez versus Samantha Salas in the 7/10 match, and the 8/9 match is usually a gooder and this time out it’ll be veterans Cristina Amaya and Carla Muñoz facing off. Also, 15th seed Michelle Key could have a punchers chance against Longoria.

There will be some interesting doubles matches with the 4/5 match between 4th seeds Key and Brenda Laime versus 5th seeds Kelani Lawrence and Jessica Parrilla, and also an anticipated 2/7 match which should be 2nd seeds Mendez and Maria Jose Vargas against 7th seeds Valeria Centellas and Muñoz. However, Centellas and Muñoz need to defeat 10th seeds Chanis Leon and Stephanie Synhorst in the morning to set that up.

Finally, former top 10 player Erika Manilla played in the Golden State Open last weekend, but will not be in Lombard. However, she can’t be too far away from returning to the LPRT, so perhaps we’ll see her at next month’s Christmas Classic in Maryland.

Play begins Friday morning at 9 AM with the Round of 32, and continues Friday afternoon with the Round of 16. Martinez wins singles, Laime & Mejia doubles in Denver

Gabriela Martinez won the 2024 Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) Frontline Family Foundation Mile High Open in Denver, Colorado, the first LPRT event of the 2024-25 season. She defeated LPRT #2 Paola Longoria in the final, 3-15, 15-6, 11-10. The win is her third LPRT victory and first since the Sweet Caroline Open in May 2023. Remarkably, Martinez hasn’t made it past the quarterfinals in either of the last two seasons aside from that victory.

The final went to a breaker after Martinez and Longoria split the first two games each winning by a lopsided score. Game three was close all the way. Longoria opened with a 3-0 lead, with Martinez getting the next six points to lead 6-3.

She held that lead until Longoria tied it at 9-9 with a drive serve ace to the right side. Longoria followed that up with another drive serve ace - this time to the left side that cracked out just past the short line - that made it 10-9: match point.

Longoria drove serve again, but hit it short. Her lob serve to left side began a long rally that Martinez ended on the 15th shot with a forehand cross court winner. Martinez then hit another winner - a forehand wide angle pass - to put herself on match point at 10-10. Martinez hit a drive serve to the right side, and Longoria skipped her return shot, giving Martinez the win.

In the match Martinez - a right hand player - hit many backhand drive serves to the left side: Longoria’s backhand with some success.

This final may be a preview of what we’ll see at the 2024 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships taking place at the end of August in San Antonio, Texas, as Martinez and Longoria have met in the Women’s Singles final at three of the last four World Championships with Martinez winning once and Longoria twice. Longoria has won Women's Singles at Worlds five of the last six times with Martinez's win the only exception in that period.

Doubles

Brenda Laime and Montserrat Mejia won the LPRT doubles title in Denver by defeating Natalia Mendez and Maria Jose Vargas in the final, 14-15, 15-6, 11-3. Mejia usually plays with Alexandra Herrera, but Herrera wasn’t in Denver due to injury, so she partnered with Laime, and played on the right side, as she does with the left handed Herrera, although Laime is right handed.

As for the other team, Vargas played the left side and Mendez the right. Over several years of playing together, Vargas and Mendez have varied which of them plays which side, but Vargas left and Mendez right is what they played this weekend.

They were back and forth throughout game one. When Mendez and Vargas took four point lead at 13-9, it looked like they would close it out. Instead, Laime and Mejia actually had game point first getting five straight points to make it 14-13.

A Mendez forehand pinch shot fought off that game point, and she tied it at 14-14 with a backhand shot up the right side. Vargas finished off the game on the next rally by hitting a forehand cross court shot from the front court.

Mendez and Vargas won the first two points of game two, but Laime and Mejia got the next eight to lead 8-3, and they never trailed after that, as they went on to win games two and three fairly convincingly. Mejia did a lot of the heavy lifting in those games, but Laime did her fair share, including the last two points with the winner being a backhand from deep on the left side.

In the semi-finals earlier on Saturday, Laime and Mejia beat Kelani Lawrence and Jessica Parrilla, 15-5, 15-8, while Mendez and Vargas needed to come back from a game down to defeat Longoria and Samantha Salas, 7-15, 15-10, 11-3.

The next LPRT event is the Chicago Turkey Shoot, November 22-24, in Lombard, Illinois, but they’ll also be playing outdoors next month at the 3WallBall World Championships in Las Vegas, September 24-29.
