2011 Pan Am Games - Day 1

Early results from day one of the 2011 Pan American Games racquetball competition in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the shock result of the day came late, as the Mexican doubles team of Alvaro Beltran and Javier Moreno lost to the Ecuadoran team of Alvarez and Fernando Rios, 8-15, 15-8, 11-7.

The competition has a pool play initially, so the Mexicans are eliminated, but they will get a worse draw in the elimination round later in the week. Or perhaps other teams will get a worse draw, as they'll have to play Mexico earlier in the elimination round than if Mexico had won today.

There were no surprises in women's singles, as the favorites all winning easily. But there were a couple of close matches though, as Jenny Daza of Bolivia defeated Ishey Paredes of Venezuela, 15-12, 15-11 and veteran Claudine Garcia from Dominican Republic beat Bolivian Maria Vargas, 15-10, 15-13.

There were a couple of surprises in men's singles, however, as Canadian champion Mike Green lost to Luis Perez of Dominican Republic, 3-15, 15-10, 11-7. Also, the two Colombian brothers Juan and Alejandro Herrera lost to two Venezuelan Cesars.

Cesar Castillo beat Juan Herrera, 8-15, 15-6, 11-6, and Cesar Castro defeated Alejandro Herrera, 15-5, 15-8.

The racquetball competition has two parts. An individual compeition,, which will run Monday to Saturday (Oct 17-22) and a team competition, which will run Sunday Oct 23 to Tuesday October 25.
