USAR - 40th Wilson Junior Olympics - Boy's finals

Adam Manilla and Jordan Barth were double gold medalists at the 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, as they won both single and doubles in their respective age divisions. Manilla was gold medalist in Boy's U18 singles and doubles and Barth won U14 singles and doubles.

Manilla defeated Connor Laffey, 15-3, 15-7, in the singles final and also got the best of Laffey in the doubles final, as Manilla and Sawyer Lloyd beat Laffey and Nicholas Riffel, 15-9, 15-9, in the doubles final.

It's Manilla's fourth junior championship in a row, as he won U16 the past two years and U14 in 2010.

In what was a repeat of last year's U14 singles final, Barth defeated Mauro Rojas, 15-7, 15-13, and then also defeated Rojas in doubles, as Barth and partner Justus Benson beat Rojas and Wayne Antone IV, 5-15, 15-14, 11-9.

As with Manilla, Barth's singles title was his fourth in a row. He won U12 in 2011 and 2010 and U10 in 2009.

Boy's U16 had the most upsets, but the final wasn't one of them, as 5th seed Jake Birnel got the better of 6th seed Sam Bredenbeck, 15-10, 15-11, in singles, but in doubles it was Bredenbeck and Kyle Ulliman who came out on top against Birnel and Jacob Matthews, 15-14, 15-12.

Finally, Kelani Bailey successfully defended her Girl's U18 Championship, as she beat Samantha Simmons, 15-12, 15-5.

The U14, U16, and U18 Champions from the 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics qualify for the US Junior Team that will compete at the 2013 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Junior World Championships in Sucre, Bolivia from October 20 to 25, 2013.

USAR - 40th Wilson Junior Olympics - Saturday's results

Kaitlyn Simmons and Jordan Cooperrider won their divisions Saturday at the 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. Simmons won Girl's U16 by defeating Hollie Scott, 15-14, 15-0, in the final, while Cooperrider is the U14 Champion as she beat Erika Manilla, 15-5, 15-5.

The Girl's U18 Champion will be decided on Sunday, when Kelani Bailey and Samantha Simmons face-off for the second consecutive year. Bailey won last year and will be trying make it two in a row on Sunday.

Bailey and Simmons are the Girl's U18 doubles champions, although they were the only team entered. In fact, there were only four girls doubles teams across the U14, U16 and U18 divisions, so they were all put in a round robin play-off. Manilla and Cooperrider are the U14 doubles champions and came in second in the round robin.

Simmons and Ema Muslic were third in the round robin and the Girl's U16 doubles champions by virtue of defeating Danielle Falvey and Molly Manning the other team entered in U16 Girl's Doubles, 15-6, 15-11.

Boy's Divisions

There will also be a repeat of 2012 in Boy's U14, as top seed and defending champion Jordan Barth will play 2nd seed and last year's runner up Mauro Rojas in the final on Sunday. In the semi-finals, Barth defeated Justus Benson, 15-13, 15-3, gaining a measure of revenge as Benson beat Barth in the U16 quarter finals on Friday, while Rojas needed a tie-breaker against Wayne Antone before winning, 15-11, 14-15, 11-2.

In U16, Benson couldn't follow up his upset victory over Barth, as he fell to 5th seed Jake Bimel in the semis. Bimel will take on 6th seed Sam Bredenbeck in the final on Sunday, as Bredenbeck was a forfeit winner over Rojas.

The Boy's U18 final will be a repeat of last year's final in U16, as top seed Adam Manilla - last year's U16 Champion - will play 3rd seed Connor Laffey. In the semis, Manilla defeated 4th seed Zack Wertz, 15-6, 15-4, and Laffey upset 2nd seed Nicholas Riffel, 15-5, 11-15, 11-5.

The 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics concludes Sunday at the Oakmoor Racquet and Fitness Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

USAR - 40th Wilson Junior Olympics - Quarter finals

They've played a few rounds at the 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, and the craziest results come from the Boy's U16 division, where only one of the top four seeds has made the semi-finals.

Mauro Rojas, the second seed, is the player who's made it through to the semis with a 15-10, 15-7 win over Jacob Matthews. But top seed Jordan Barth lost an 11-10 tie-breaker to 8th seed Justus Benson, 13-15, 15-11, 11-10.

The 3rd and 4th seeds in U16 lost as well. Sixth seed Sam Bredenbeck beat 4th seed Matthew Goolsby, 1512, 7-15, 11-4, and 5th seed Jake Bimel took out 4th seed Alec Wasilonsky, 15-6, 15-7.

Usually, when you lose to a player in a tournament, you have to wait until the next tournament to get a re-match. But Barth only has to wait one day, as he will face Benson in the semi-finals of U14, where Barth, as defending champion, is also the #1 seed. Benson is 4th seed in U14.

In the U14 quarter finals, Barth defeated Shaharyar Soomro, 15-2, 15-5, and Benson beat Sebastian Fernandez, 15-3, 15-14, on the top side of the draw, while 3rd seed Wayne Antone defeated Carter Simon, 15-2, 15-1, and Rojas, who's also the 2nd seed in U14 as he is in U16, got the best of Sean Henry, 15-3, 15-4.

In boy's U18, top seed Adam Manilla got through to the semi-finals with a win over Joshua Lebow. He'll face 4th seed Zack Wertz, who defeated Tyler Kendrick, 11-15, 15-12, 11-3, in the quarters.

The other top seeds are also through to the semis, as 2nd seed Nicholas Riffel beat Tanner Gross, 15-5, 15-8, and 3rd seed Connor Laffey in the semis, as Laffey defeated Mitchell Hardin, 15-12, 15-8.

Girl's Divisions

On the boy's side there have been some close matches, including several tie-breakers. But that hasn't been the case in Girl's U18, where in six matches the most points the losing player has scored is four (4!). That happened in Hannah Shnurman's win over Krista Yourstone, which was 15-2, 15-2.

Shnurman and Yourstone are both Iowa players, so they are likely participating primarily because the event is in Iowa, and that's great. But they are up against some strong competition, including Kelani Bailey, last year's U18 champion and the daughter of former US National Team player Malia Bailey.

Kelani Bailey has only surrendered one point in three matches so far with one to go. However, her last match will be against last year's U18 runner up Samantha Simmons, who has also been winning her other matches comfortably. But their match should be much more competitive than what they have faced so far.

In the other girl's divisions, Hollie Scott is in the curious position of finishing higher in U16 than in U14, as she's in the U16 final, but can finish no higher than 3rd in U14, which was a four player round robin play-off.

In U16, Scott defeated Molly Manning, 15-7, 15-9, in the semi-finals, and will face top seed Kaitlyn Simmons in the final, as Simmons beat Danielle Falvey in the other semi, 15-1, 15-4. Simmons was runner up in U16 last year.

Girl's U14 will come down to showdown between Erika Manilla, last year's U14 champion, and Jordan Cooperrider, who finished 3rd last year, as both of them defeated the other two players in their division, who where Scott and Kristine Holman. Scott and Holman will play-off for third.

The 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics continues Saturday at the Oakmoor Racquet and Fitness Club in Des Moines, Iowa, and will conclude on Sunday.

USAR - 40th Wilson USAR Junior Olympics Preview

The 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics begins today in Des Moines, Iowa. There are 143 players in Des Moines from divisions U18 down to U6/8 Multibounce. That's about the same as last year in Fullerton, Calif., where there were 142 players.

The players are from 27 states with the most coming from the host state of Iowa, which has 22 players in the event. California and Texas both have 21 players in Des Moines followed by Oregon (12 players) and Minnesota (10 players).

There are 31 girls in Des Moines this year (21.7% of the total), and that's about the same as last year, when there were 33. But there are only six in U18 with eight in U16 and four in U14. Those are the Junior World Cup divisions, and we're sure the US Junior Team coaches would like to see bigger pools of players competing for the Junior Team spots.

There are 25 boys in U18, 28 in U16, and 30 in U14.

Who will win?

In the boy's divisions, the top four finishers in U18 from last year are too old now, so it's wide open. But three of the top four finisher in U16 have moved up to U18, including last year's U16 champion Adam Manilla, runner up Connor Laffey and 3rd place finisher Sawyer Lloyd.

Last year's U14 winner and runner-up are both back in that division for a second time, so Jordan Barth and Mauro Rojas could have another showdown in the final. They are also both in U16 as well.

On the girl's side, last year's U18 champion, Kelani Bailey, runner up Samantha Simmons, are both back and likely to be the finalists again this year.

In U16, the 2012 champion Rebecca Nielsen isn't in Des Moines, but the runner up Kaitlyn Simmons is, so she's likely the favourite in U16 this year.

Finally, Erika Manilla, last year's U14 champion, should be the favourite to win again this year, although Jordan Cooperrider, who finished 3rd last year, is also in the draw.

The 40th Wilson USA Racquetball Junior Olympics runs from June 26-30 at the Oakmoor Racquet and Fitness Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

Sotomayor dominates at WRT 2013 Chile Open

Veronica Sotomayor dominated the women's division of the 2013 Chile Open on the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) in Vina del Mar, Chile, defeating each of the other four women in the draw in two straight games, including convincing wins over Cristina Amaya, 15-5, 15-9, and Maria Paz Muñoz, 15-6, 15-1.

Amaya finished second with three wins and a loss.

Cecilia Cerquetti of Argentina was the surprise 3rd place finisher with one win and three losses. We say a surprise, as we haven't heard of Cerquetti before, yet her results clearly indicate she's a good player. She defeated Muñoz, 15-7, 15-7, and almost beat Jessica Parrilla, losing 15-14, 15-11.

We know both Muñoz and Parrilla are good players, so we have to assume the same about Cerquetti if she's going toe-to-toe with them. It's interesting to have a new player on the scene, especially as Cerquetti comes from Argentina, which hasn't developed a strong woman player, aside from Véronique Guillemette, who is a transplanted Canadian.

Word is that Cerquetti is a left-handed player, and has a squash background. She's been on the Argentine National Squash Team representing her country at the 2010 South American Games, 2011 Pan Am Games and 2012 Women's World Team Squash Championships.

Muñoz and Parrilla finished 4th and 5th, respectively, with one win and three losses each.

The next WRT event is Flagstaff Open, June 20-23 in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

World Racquetball Tour - 2013 Chile Open Quarters

The higher seeds proved their mettle in the quarter-finals of the 2013 Chile Open on the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) in Vina del Mar, Chile by winning all their matches in two straight games.

The most emphatic victory was by Mexican veteran Polo Gutierrez who defeated American David Horn, 15-0, 15-5. Horn, who's a fine young player, didn't get on the board until it was 3-0 in game two.

Gutierrez played well making shots from everywhere on the court, and Horn never found a serve that he was comfortable with.

Although all matches were two straight, two players needed big comebacks in game two to finish off their opponents. Top seed Alejendro Landa was down 12-4 to Kurtis Cullen in game two of their match, but he managed to hold Cullen at 12 while scoring 11 unanswered points to win the match, 15-5, 15-12.

Similarly, Anthony Herrera was down 8-0 in game two against Salvador Ortiz after winning the first game, but he came back and tied the game at 9-9 and then pushed on to win it, taking the match 15-6, 15-10.

Herrera and Landa will face off in one semi-final later on Thursday, while Gutierrez will take on Alejandro Cardona, who defeated Fernando Rios in the quarters, 15-11, 15-7.

The semi-finals go Friday afternoon (3 PM & 4 PM) with the final on Saturday (2 PM) and can be viewed via the WRT website. Chilean time is the same as Eastern time in North America.

World Racquetball Tour - 2013 Chile Open 32s

In the early results from the 2013 Chile Open World Racquetball Tour (WRT) event in Vina del Mar, Chile, there have been a few upsets. In the biggest one - by the WRT rankings - Fernando Rios, ranked 23rd, beat 10th ranked Francisco Troncoso, 15-12, 15-9, but the result isn't really a surprise as Rios was silver medalist at last year's Pan American Championships and got to the quarter-finals of the IRT Fullerton event last month.

Thus, Rios could win a few more matches in Vina del Mar. His next opponent will be against 7th seed Felipe Camacho, who beat 26th seed Diego Silva, 15-4, 15-5.

While the Rios-Camacho match should be good, the highlight of the 16s will likely be 6th Gilberto Mejia versus 11th seed David Horn, as it pits a Mexican veteran in Mejia, who's played for the Mexican National Team several times, against Horn, who's one of the up and coming young American players from Stockton, California.

In the 32s, Mejia beat Cristobal Accorsi, 15-5, 15-1, while Horn defeated Rogelio Medina, 15-3, 15-5.

In other action, 17th seed Pablo Kurzbard defeated 16th seed Jose Daniel Alvarez, 15-7, 15-11, and will face top seed Alejandro Landa later on Thursday.

The 3rd and 4th seeds have also won their first matches. Third seed Polo Gutierrez beat Mauricio Borquez, 15-2, 15-0, and 4th seed Sebastian Franco defeated Antonio Garete, 15-0, 15-12.

The Round of 32 continues in Chile, and the Round of 16 will be played later on Thursday with the quarter-finals and semi-finals on Friday and final on Saturday.

Matches can be viewed via the WRT website from Friday morning through the finals on Saturday afternoon.
