The higher seeds proved their mettle in the quarter-finals of the 2013 Chile Open on the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) in Vina del Mar, Chile by winning all their matches in two straight games.
The most emphatic victory was by Mexican veteran Polo Gutierrez who defeated American David Horn, 15-0, 15-5. Horn, who's a fine young player, didn't get on the board until it was 3-0 in game two.
Gutierrez played well making shots from everywhere on the court, and Horn never found a serve that he was comfortable with.
Although all matches were two straight, two players needed big comebacks in game two to finish off their opponents. Top seed Alejendro Landa was down 12-4 to Kurtis Cullen in game two of their match, but he managed to hold Cullen at 12 while scoring 11 unanswered points to win the match, 15-5, 15-12.
Similarly, Anthony Herrera was down 8-0 in game two against Salvador Ortiz after winning the first game, but he came back and tied the game at 9-9 and then pushed on to win it, taking the match 15-6, 15-10.
Herrera and Landa will face off in one semi-final later on Thursday, while Gutierrez will take on Alejandro Cardona, who defeated Fernando Rios in the quarters, 15-11, 15-7.
The semi-finals go Friday afternoon (3 PM & 4 PM) with the final on Saturday (2 PM) and can be viewed via the WRT website. Chilean time is the same as Eastern time in North America.
