Upsets on Day 1 of singles at the Canadian Racquetball Championships

Two big upsets on the first day of singles play at the Canadian Racquetball Championships in Burlington, Ontario, as the Men's 3rd and 4th seeds both lost in the Round of 16. Samuel Murray, the 3rd seed, and Pedro Castro, the 4th seed, won the Men's Doubles championship on Tuesday, but lost out in their first singles matches on Wednesday.

Murray lost to 14th seed Eric Desrochers, 15-12, 4-15, 11-8, while former Men's Singes champion Corey Osborne turned back time to defeat Castro, 6-15, 15-4, 12-10. Osborne's singles title came back in 2005.

Two other matches went tie-breaker, as 5th seed James Landeryou came back from a game down to defeat 12th seed Tanner Mattson, 14-16, 15-9, 11-6, and in a gutsy performance 7th seed Tommy Murray came from 10-2 down in the tie-breaker to beat 10th seed Trevor Webb, 15-6, 11-15, 12-10, in what was a battle of a former Canadian Boy's U18 champion against the current Boy's U18 champion. Murray felt ill prior to the breaker, but with his back against the wall, he tried to shoot everything and amazingly it worked out for him.

In Women's Open, Jennifer Saunders defeated Alexis Iwaasa, 15-4, 15-13, and Danielle Drury got a default win against Valerie Fallu, who has a shoulder injury that's preventing her from playing.

The singles competition continues Thursday. These championships are the last opportunity for players to earn points that will get them spots on the Canadian National Team that will compete at the 2016 World Championships in Cali, Colombia in July.
