Mike Green and Trevor Webb defeated Nicolas Bousquet and Tommy Murray in an intense three game match, 10-15, 16-14, 13-11, to claim the Men's Doubles title at the 2017 Canadian Racquetball Championships in Brossard, Québec on Tuesday. The win is Green's 10th and Webb's first. Green now has 20 overall Canadian Championships: 10 in Men's Doubles and 10 in Men's Singles. He could win his 11th Men's Singles title later this week. If Green does win the singles title, he'll be the winningest Canadian racquetball player. His 20 titles are tied with Jennifer Saunders, who has 9 Women's Singles titles and 11 Women's Doubles titles.
Webb is the sixth player Green has won a Canadian Men's Doubles Championship with after Mike Ceresia in 2000, Tom O'Brien in 2004, Brian Istace in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Kris Odegard in 2010 and 2011, and Coby Iwaasa in 2013 and 2015.
Michèle Morissette and Christine Richardson successfully defended their Women's Doubles title by defeating the 2015 Women's Doubles Champions Danielle Drury and Jennifer Saunders in two close games, 17-15, 15-13.
In game one of the Men's Doubles final, it did not look like Green and Webb were going to get it done, as Bousquet and Murray led the entire game, going up early with a 7-1 lead. Green and Webb did fight back, and get within one point at 8-7, but that was as close as they came, as Bousquet and Murray went up 12-7 and closed it out 15-10.
Game two started similarly, as Bousquet and Murray were ahead early at 3-0 and 6-4. But Green and Webb held them there, and took an 8-6 lead. They extended that lead to 12-7, but it was a nervy finish to the game, as Bousquet and Murray came back to tie it at 14-14. But they lost the serve when Murray skipped a forehand shot.
That gave Green and Webb a chance to win it, and they did so as Webb hit a forehand reaction winner and Green a forehand reverse pinch winner.
The third game started the same as the first two with Bousquet and Murray getting the first three points. They kept that lead, and went up 5-2. But Green and Webb then came back with seven unanswered points, including four winners by Green, that made the score 9-5 in their favour.
A Bousquet and Murray timeout led to a Bousquet backhand return winner to get them the serve back. They scored two points to get within two at 9-7, but a soft Green pinch shot sided them out. A Green ace drive serve to the right side made it 10-7, but on their first match point, Green put a ball into the floor to give the serve back to Bousquet and Murray.
Bousquet and Murray took full advantage, as they went on a run of their own, scoring four points to have their own match point at 11-10. But a long rally ended when a ball was blasted at Murray, who tried to put it to the ceiling to keep the rally going, but the shot didn't make the front wall.
With the serve back, Green tied the score, 11-11, with a forehand pinch shot, then Webb hit a forehand pinch winner from the left side wall, to put them on match point for a second time. The winning point came on the next rally, as Bousquet skipped a forehand shot bringing a great match to an end.
The 2017 Canadian National Championships continue Wednesday, when the singles competitions begin. Those competitions will conclude Saturday at the Sani Sport Club in Brossard, Québec.
