Doubles Round of 16 at 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships

There were only a few double matches Tuesday at the 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, as most of the teams had byes in the Men’s and Women’s Rounds of 16 and there were no Mixed Doubles matches.

Both women’s matches were tie-breakers. Tenth seeds Maria Jose Muñoz and Ana Sarmiento of Ecuador came back from a game down and then held on to win in five games and upset 7th seeds Michèle Morissette and Danielle Ramsay of Canada, 12-14, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9. Also, Chile’s Paula Mansilla and Carla Muñoz - the 8th seeds - won a close match versus Costa Rica’s Jimena Gomez and Maricruz Ortiz - the 9th seeds - 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 10-12, 11-6.

In the quarterfinals, M.J. Muñoz and Armiento will play Mexicans Alexandra Herrera and Montserrat Mejia, the 2nd seeds, while Mansilla and C. Muñoz face top seeds Gabriela Martinez and Maria Renee Rodriguez of Guatemala.

Only one men’s match went more than three games, as 7th seeds Fernando Kurzbard and Daniel Maggi of Argentina defeated 10th seeds Rafael Gatica and Rodrigo Salgado from Chile, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9. Argentina will play 2nd seeds Bolivia - Kadim Carrasco and Conrrado Moscoso - in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Of note, Canadian Samuel Murray, who injured his knee in Tuesday’s doubles match versus Mexico, was deemed unable to continue in the tournament. Rules allowed for Murray to be replaced, so Trevor Webb is now playing doubles with Coby Iwaasa, and Iwaasa is playing singles in place of Murray.

In their first match together, Iwaasa and Webb beat Ronal Cardona and Carlos Medrano from Honduras, 11-5, 11-6, 11-2, so they will play 3rd seeds Andres Acuña and Gabriel Garcia of Costa Rica in the quarters.
