The medal round began Tuesday with the Round of 32 in both women's and men's play at the 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and there were a few upsets, but not real surprises as the upsets happened between closely seeded players.
In Women’s Singles, 18th seed Merynanyelly Delgado of the Dominican Republic defeated 15th seed Maria Paz Riquelme of Colombia, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-2, and 17th seed Maricruz Ortiz from Costa Rica beat 16th seed Paula Mansilla of Chile, 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.
In a near upset, Canadian Juliette Parent, seeded 21st, went the distance with 12th seed Rhonda Rajsich before succumbing to the veteran in five games, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8. Parent and Rajisch played in the group stage, so their meeting on day one of the medal round was strange. Moreover Rajisch will play Paola Longoria of Mexico in the Round of 16, and Longoria was in the same group as Rajsich and Parent. It makes the seeding seem odd.
In Men’s Singles, 10th seed Juan Francisco Cueva of Ecuador was pushed to five games by 23rd seed Abraham Mercado of Puerto Rico, 11-3, 11-4, 6-11, 11-13, 11-1, in what was the only five game match of the Men's 32s. Cueva will play 7th seed Andree Parrilla in the Round of 16.
The only upset in Men’s Singles, was 17th seed Fernando Kurzbard of Argentina defeating 16th seed Ramon De Leon of the Dominican Republic, 11-6, 2-11, 11-6, 12-10, so Kurzbard will play the #1 seed Carlos Keller of Bolivia in the 16s Wednesday.
