There were only four doubles matches Tuesday at the 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and they were all in Mixed Doubles with two of them going tie-breaker.
The upset of the day went to Ecuador, the 10th seeds, as Maria Paz Muñoz and Juan Francisco Cueva came back from 2-1 down to defeat 7th seeds Coby Iwaasa and Danielle Ramsay of Canada, 11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9. Ecuador will play 2nd seeds Angelica Barrios and Conrrado Moscoso of Bolivia in the quarterfinals Thursday.
But the longest match of the day goes to Colombia and Costa Rica, the 8th and 9th seeds, respectively, whose second game alone went 18-16. That game went to the Colombians Cristina Amaya and Set Cubillos, who then had a bit of a let down in game three, with the Costa Ricans Felipe Camacho and Maricruz Ortiz winning that 11-3.
But the Colombians bounced back and won the next two games to take the match, 8-11, 18-16, 3-11, 11-9, 11-7. Colombia faces top seeds Paola Longoria and Rodrigo Montoya of Mexico in the quarters Thursday.
Guatemalans Gabriela Martinez and Juan Salvatierra beat Cubans Samira Ferrer Marcilli and Maikel Moyet, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6, and will play 4th seeds Maria Jose Vargas and Diego Garcia of Argentina in the quarters. Finally, 6th seeds Jaime Mansilla and Carla Muñoz of Chile defeated 11th seeds Merynanyelly Delgado and Ramon De Leon of the Dominican Republic, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6, 11-3, which put them in the quarters against the USA’s Sam Bredenbeck and Michelle Key.
