Vargas wins LPRT New Jersey Open

Maria Jose Vargas defeated Frédérique Lambert in four games, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-3, Sunday to win the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) New Jersey Open in Warren, New Jersey. It’s Vargas’s second career LPRT tournament title, and the second final appearance for Lambert.

After splitting the first two games, Lambert was up early in game three at 5-0. However, Vargas responded with eight straight points to lead 8-5. Lambert closed the gap to 9-7, but that was all she could do as Vargas went on to win it 11-7 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In game four, Vargas got out to a 4-0 lead, extended that to 7-2, and never looked back.

Sunday’s final was the first women’s pro final without either Paola Longoria or Rhonda Rajsich since November 2010, when Samantha Salas defeated Kerri Wachtel to win the Puget Sound Challenge. Before that you have to go back to the 2007-08 season, when Cheryl Gudinas beat Wachtel to win in Panama.

The next LPRT event is the California / Nevada State Singles March 20-22 in Fountain Valley, California.
