2015 IRF World Juniors - Boy's Results

There are some funny things about International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Racquetball Championships, which are going on now in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. One of them is that Bolivians will show up who you've never heard of before, and win, beating people you had heard of before.

So it was Wednesday in Boy's U18, as Bolivian Noe Rivera defeated Set Cubillos of Colombia, 15-12, 15-11, in the Round of 16. Rivera's team-mate, Miguel Orihuela also won, beating Jose Ubilla of Costa Rica, 9-15, 15-7, 11-0.

Another funny thing about World Juniors is that players playing two singles divisions can win in their older age division but lose in their younger age division.

So it was with American Daniel Rojas, who's also known as Mauro Rojas, as he won his match in U18, defeating Freddy Godoy of Ecuador, 15-4, 15-3, but lost in U16 to Trevor Webb of Canada, 3-15, 15-10, 11-3.

Rojas was cruising in the first game with a solid power player game. But in game two, Webb started to move him around with jam serves and following them up with crisp down the line shots.

In the breaker, Rojas got the first point, but didn't score again until Webb was on match point at 10-1. After Rojas scored two points, Webb got the serve back with a backhand cross court return. He then won the match with a good forehand pinch shot with Rojas on the right side. Rojas dove for it, but couldn't get his racquet on it.

Andree Parrilla of Mexico, who we think is one of the favourites in U18, continues to be challenged this week, and today the challenge came from Sam Bredenbeck of the USA, who took the first game from Parrilla, 15-8.

But Parrilla responded with a strong second game, winning 15-1, for force a tie-breaker.

In the breaker, Parrilla goes up early at 4-1. But Bredenbeck comes back, and takes the lead at 5-4 and again at 6-5 off a drive serve ace to the left side, Parrilla's backhand.

But Parrilla got the serve back, and scored four points to make it 9-6. A backhand serve return got Bredenbeck the serve back, and he called a timeout.

Bredenbeck made it 9-7 after play resumed, as Parrilla whiffed on a ball out of the back right corner.

However, Parrilla got the serve back on the next rally, and then won it on the two ensuing rallies, as he hit a forehand down the line for the 10th points and then a backhand down the line for eleventh, making the final score 8-15, 15-1, 11-7.

Only one boy's doubles match was played Wednesday. South Koreans Gun Hee Lee and Yoon Jun Ha, who had a dramatic tie-breaker win over Costa Ricans Sergio Acuña and Andres Montero in their last group stage match on Tuesday, lost to Hondurans Sergio Ortega and Marco Sarmiento, 15-13, 15-5.

Ortega and Sarmiento will play top seeds Gerardo Franco and Cristian Longoria of Mexico in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
