Iwaasa & Murray, Lambert & Saunders are 2018 Canadian Doubles Champions

Coby Iwaasa and Samuel Murray won Men’s Doubles with Frédérique Lambert and Jennifer Saunders winning Women’s Doubles at the 2018 Canadian National Racquetball Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba. All four players had previously been doubles champions, but with different partners. Iwaasa and Murray had each won twice previously: Iwaasa with Mike Green both times, and Murray with Pedro Castro and Vincent Gagnon. Lambert had won doubles once before with Brandi Jacobson Prentice, while Saunders had 11 doubles titles previously (10 with Josée Grand’Maître and 1 with Danielle Drury).

The Men’s Doubles final was a brother showdown, as Samuel Murray’s older brother Tommy was on the other side playing with Nicolas Bousquet. Iwaasa and Samuel needed a tie-breaker to defeat Bousquet and Tommy, 15-13, 10-15, 11-6.

On the women’s side, Lambert and Saunders beat Michèle Morissette and Christine Richardson in two close games, 15-9, 15-13.

The National Championships is also the third event that is used to select Canada’s National Team that will compete at the 2018 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships in August in Cali, Colombia. The doubles results will be combined with the singles results from this week, as well as the results from the two National Team Selection Events that happened earlier this season, to select the players for Cali.
