Gold medal results from 2022 IRF World Junior Championships

The 33rd International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Championships came to an end Saturday in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In the 15 World Cup divisions (U21, U18, U16, singles, doubles & mixed doubles for boys & girls) gold went to Mexico eight times, to Bolivia five times, and to Argentina and USA once each.

In U21, Argentine Diego Garcia defeated Mexican Erick Trujillo in five games, 11-8, 8-11, 11-2, 6-11, 12-10 for the Boys Singles title, while Bolivian Angelica Barrios won the Girls Singles title by beating Mexican Mafer Gutierrez, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6.

Barrios also won the two U21 doubles divisions - Girls and Mixed. She and Natalia Mita defeated Mexicans Mafer Gutierrez and Valeria Hernandez in Girls Doubles, 12-10, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, and in Mixed Doubles, Barrios and brother Hector defeated Garcia and Martina Katz, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10.

The Boys U21 Doubles title went to Mexicans Pepe Ramos and Trujillo, who defeated Garcia and Tomás Oyhanart, in four games, 11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 11-4.

In U18, Bolivian Micaela Meneses won Girls Singles for the second consecutive year, as she beat Mexican Ivanna Valderrama in the final, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6. Bolivia also won the Girls U18 Doubles title with Rebecca Amaya and Valeria Martinez defeating Americans Heather Mahoney and Julia Stein, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7.

But the other three U18 divisions went to Mexico, and Sebastian Hernández had a hand in each win. He won Boys U18 Singles by beating Bolivian Luis Aguilar in the final, 11-5, 11-3, 11-5, and teamed up with Luis Renteria to win the Boys U18 Doubles title by defeating Guatemalans Jose Caceras and Alex Sierra, 11-4, 13-15, 11-8, 12-10. Finally, in U18 Mixed Doubles, Hernández and Angela Ortega beat Aguilar and Amaya, 11-6, 11-9, 11-3.

Mexico won five of the six U16 divisions. American Naomi Ros spoiled the Mexican sweep, as she defeated Mexican Yanna Salazar in five games, 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 9-11, 11-4. But you needn’t feel too bad for Salazar, as she won both the Girls U16 Doubles title and the Mixed Doubles title.

In Girls U16 Doubles, Salazar and Cynthia Gutierrez came back and pulled out a five game win over Guatemalans Andrea Reyes and Anna Paul Augilar Salvatierra, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9. Then in the U16 Mixed Doubles final, Salazar and Jorge Gutierrez defeated Bolivians Hernán Ruiz and Krystin Salinas, 11-13, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7.

That win was the last of Gutierrez’s three titles, as he also won Boys U16 Singles by outlasting his team-mate Eder Renteria, 4-11, 8-11, 11-5, 16-14, 11-9, and the two teamed up to win Boys U16 Doubles in another five game match, as they defeated Bolivians Nicolás Iglesias and Hernán Ruiz, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6.

Thus, there were three players who won three gold medals Saturday: Angelica Barrios of Bolivia in Girls U21, and Mexicans Sebastian Hernández in Boys U16 and Jorge Gutierrez in Boys U16.
