Shane Vanderson, playing the best he's played in a long time, upset the International Racquetball Tour's (IRT's) #3 player, Ben Croft in four games, 11-(-1), 11-6, 11-13, 11-9, in the quarter finals of the New York City Pro-Am in Syosset, New York. Vanderson was superb in game one, getting up 9-0 and frustrating Croft so much that he got a technical for hitting the ball after the rally was over, leading to the negative score line.
Speaking after the match, Croft was composed but clearly frustrated and said as much, saying he "played garbage" and "just wasn't into it" for some reason that Croft couldn't put his finger on. But he credited his opponent as well, saying Vanderson "couldn't miss in the first two games."
Vanderson, looking fitter than last year, said he felt "great" and was "excited" and "happy to be here." His play reflected that as he moved around the court with energy including one rally he won with two dives that kept the ball in play.
Vanderson will play #2 seed Rocky Carson in the semis, as Carson defeated Andy Hawthorne, 11-1, 11-6, 11-4.
Top seed Kane Waselenchuk beat Jose Rojas, 11-3, 11-2, 11-4, to also advance to the semis, and he'll play Jack Huczek, who defeated Vincent Gagnon, 8-11, 12-10, 11-1, 11-3.
