Coby Iwaasa up set #1 seed Alejandro Cardona to win the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) Fall Brawl in Lombard, Illinois. Iwaasa defeated Cardona in the final in three games, 9-15, 15-9, 11-8, to claim his first WRT title.
Cardona got a good start in game one, as he took an early 5-1 lead. But Iwaasa came back and tied it at 5-5. They went back and forth, but then Cardona changed to lob serves to Iwaasa's backhand, running the score to 10-6.
Iwaasa stuck to drive serving, with most aimed to the left side - Cardona's backhand, and he cut the difference to 10-9. But never tied it, as Cardona held Iwaasa at 9 and closed out the game using drive serves.
Iwaasa got a good start in game two, and went out to an 12-3 lead, helped by solid Z serves to Cardona's backhand. But Cardona stuck with it, and cut the lead to 13-9, including some lobs to the left side again. Anyone rooting for Iwaasa was undoubtedly nervous as Cardona got close to tying the game.
But Iwaasa regained serve, and scored two straight points to force a tie-breaker.
The breaker was a streaky game, as Iwaasa got the first three points, Cardona the next five, and then six more by Iwaasa, which made the score 9-5. Cardona called a timeout, and then scored three unanswered points to cut the lead to one at 9-8.
However, Cardona got no more, as Iwaasa got the serve back with a backhand pinch shot, and then scored two straight points by again using a drive Z serve to Cardona's backhand.
Iwaasa, a Canadian National Team member, was playing his fourth straight WRT event. He lost to Cardona in a tie-breaker in the quarterfinals in the Chile Open in July, and was also a quarterfinalist in Juarez.
Iwaasa will be competing in the US Open next week in Minneapolis, and also at the 2014 International Racquetball Federation World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia in Boys U18 later this month.
The next WRT event will be in Chihuahua, Mexico November 6-9.
