Maria Jose Vargas and Cristina Amaya are into their first career US Open semi-finals, as they won their respective Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) quarterfinals Friday at the 2014 United Healthcare US Open, and they both did so in three straight games.
Third seed Vargas defeated 11th seed Sofia Rascon, 11-2, 11-4, 11-3, and Amaya was an upset winner against Frédérique Lambert, 12-10, 11-4, 11-3.
Amaya was up 6-0 on Lambert in game one of their match, only to see Lambert come back and lead 10-8. However, Lambert couldn't close it out, and Amaya took advantage to win it 12-10. Lambert never seemed to recover from that.
Joining Amaya and Vargas in the semis will be LPRT #1 Paola Longoria who defeated 17 year old Diana Aguilar, 11-0, 11-1, 11-2, and LPRT #2 Rhonda Rajsich who eked out a tie-breaker win against 10th seed Veronica Sotomayor, 11-9, 4-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6.
The LPRT semi-finals will be at 10 AM and 1 PM on Saturday.
