The top Mexican racquetball players have gathered in Chihuahua for the chance to represent their country in international competitions this year, as the Campeonato Nacional Mexicano de Racquetbol Selectivo begins today. First thing to note is the size of the draws.
There are a full 16 players in Women’s Singles, so 8 teams in Women’s Doubles, and 41 players in Men’s Singles with 18 teams in Men’s Doubles. Contrast that with what’s going on at the 2016 USA Racquetball National Doubles Championships in Tempe, Arizona and at last weekend’s Racquetball Canada National Team Selection Event in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
In Tempe, 11 players are in Women’s Singles and 7 teams in Women’s Doubles, which are similar to the Mexican numbers, but there were only 7 Canadian players in Grande Prairie. But only 9 American men are in Men’s Singles with 7 teams in Men’s Doubles. Twenty two Canadians were Men’s Open last weekend.
The differences in numbers are substantial, and speak to the number of players being developed in the respective countries. There are still high quality players in the USA and Canada, but fewer than in Mexico, which is also starting to be reflected on the respective men’s and women’s pro tours.
This trend has been happening for some time, but when the Mexico and USA events happen on the same weekend, the contrast is stark.
