39th Annual Papa Nicholas IRT Shamrock Shootout - Preview

The International Racquetball Tour (IRT) is back in action this weekend with the 39th Annual Papa Nicholas IRT Shamrock Shootout in Lombard, Illinois. Play begins Thursday with the Rounds of 64 and 32 in singles and the Round of 16 in doubles.

Eight of the top 10 and 14 of the top 17 IRT players are in Illinois, led by IRT #1 Conrrado Moscoso, #2 Rodrigo Montoya and #3 Jake Bredenbeck. Former #1 Kane Waselenchuk is also in the draw looking to win two consecutive tournaments for the first time since March 2020, when he won the 35th Annual Shamrock Shootout. That was the last of 7 consecutive wins for Waselenchuk.

Montoya withdrew from the doubles final two weeks ago in Minneapolis, as he hurt his ankle stepping on Adam Manilla’s foot. He’s in the singles and doubles draw, so presumably he’s fit, although is he a 100%? We’ll have to see. He’s playing doubles with Erick Trujillo, and they are the second seeds. Manilla and Andree Parrilla - the winners in Minneapolis - are the top seeds in doubles.

Singles play begins Thursday at noon, and they’ll play two rounds on Thursday. The first round of doubles is Thursday night. The finals are on Sunday with singles at 11 AM and doubles at noon.
