Flores defeat Bredenbeck at 39th Annual IRT Papa Nicholas Shamrock Shootout

Two upsets in the Round of 32 at the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) 39th Annual Papa Nicholas Shamrock Shootout in Lombard, Illinois Friday. The biggest was Jhonatan Flores taking out IRT #3 Jake Bredenbeck, 15-5, 15-7. Sources have told us that Flores - the current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) Boys U18 World Junior Champion - is the real deal, but still, taking out the #3 player on tour is a big upset. Impressive.

Flores will play left-hander Robert Collins in the Round of 16 Friday, as Collins eked out a win over Oscar Elias Nieto Valadez, 15-11, 10-15, 11-9, on Thursday.

The other upset comes from the Wily Veteran category, as 21st seed John Goth held on to defeat 12th seed Kadim Carrasco, 15-11, 3-15, 11-7. Veteran Goth defeated Collins two weeks ago in Minneapolis, so that’s two solid wins for him. He’ll play 5th seed Adam Manilla in the 16s Friday, as Manilla beat Luis Aguilar, 15-4, 15-4, on Thursday. Goth and Manilla played in Minneapolis with the left-hander Manilla winning in two straight games.

Flores and partner Hector Barrios, the 10th seeds, beat the 7th seeds Diego Gatica and Jaime Mansilla, 15-7, 15-8, in the doubles Round of 16, so they’ll play 2nd seeds Rodrigo Montoya and Erick Trujillo on Friday in the quarters.

One other upset in doubles, as 9th seeds Diego Gastelum and Cole Sendrey beat 8th seeds Carlos Ramirez and Mauricio Zelada, 15-9, 15-7. They’ll play top seeds Adam Manilla and Andree Parrilla in the quarters Friday.

Singles play continues Friday with the Round of 16 at 10 and 11 AM, and they’ll play two rounds Friday with the quarterfinals from 5 PM on. The doubles quarterfinals are Friday at 2 PM.
