Manilla defeats Mejia in LPRT 32s at 2021 UnitedHealthcare US Open

Erika Manilla created the first shock in the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) singles draw at the 2021 UnitedHealthcare US Open in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as she took out the 5th seed Monserrat Mejia, 9-15, 15-13, 11-3, in the Round of 32. The win puts Manilla into the Round of 16, where she'll face another upset winner, as Micaela Meneses beat 12th seed Nancy Enriquez, 15-11, 15-3. Thus, either Manilla or Meneses will be a surprise quarterfinalist at this year's US Open.

Veronica Sotomayor's first US Open run in 5 years came to an end as she narrowly lost to 8th seed Jessica Parrilla, 11-15, 15-9, 11-10. Sotomayor was dominant in game one, when she never trailed. But Parrilla levelled the match by winning game two.

Parrilla carried that momentum into game three, going up 6-0 and 9-4. But Sotomayor, a former top 10 LPRT player, fought back to tie the game at 10-10. Then Parrilla called a time out.

When play resumed, Sotomayor hit a backhand shot that came around the right side of the court, and off the back wall. As Parrilla was setting up for her shot, she was interfered with by Sotomayor, as she was trying to get out of the way. The referee called an avoidable (or penalty hinder), which gave the serve back to Parrilla.

Some in what seemed like a pro Sotomayor audience thought that should have been just a hinder replay, not an avoidable. But Parrilla was setting up to hit what looked like would be a rallying winning shot, and Sotomayor clearly interfered with that set up. So, while might have been a harsh call, it wasn't wrong.

Parrilla hit a drive serve to the left side that Sotomayor skipped almost at her feet, as the ball went into the floor after she hit it. There have been some odd bounces on that court that have been called court hinders, and it seemed Sotomayor mildly protested that had happened on the serve. However, the referee didn't see any, so the play stood.
