Preview of 2023 LPRT Frontline Boston Open

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) will be in action this weekend at the 2023 LPRT Frontline Boston Open in Marlbrough, Massachusetts. There are 23 players in the draw, including the 13 of the top 14 players, led by LPRT #1 Paola Longoria and #3 Montserrat Mejia, who’ll be trying to win her fourth straight event.

The last player to win four consecutive women’s pro events not named Longoria was Rhonda Rajsich back in 2008, when she won six in a row bridging over the end of the 2007-08 season and start of 2008-09. The three events before that streak were won by Cheryl Gudinas.

Since then Longoria has dominated, but she lost in the Round of 16 two weeks ago in Arizona, where Maria Jose Vargas defeated her. It was Longoria’s first loss in the Round of 16 since January 2007, when Jo Shattuck beat her in Stockton, California. There’s a possibility that Longoria and Vargas will meet in the semis this weekend.

In doubles, Longoria and Samantha Salas, the current International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champions, are the top seeds with Valeria Centellas and Natalia Mendez as the 2nd seeds, Erika Manilla and Mejia the 3rd seeds and 4th seeds Kelani Lawrence and Hollie Scott. The trickiest quarterfinal match will likely be Manilla and Mejia versus 6th seeds Angelica Barrios and Brenda Laime.

You can watch the action live from Massachusetts via the LPRT YouTube channel. Play begins 9 AM Friday morning, and concludes Sunday with the singles final at noon and doubles final at 1 PM. All times Eastern.
