Roberts & Dowell win at 2023 USA Racquetball Intercollegiates

Annie Roberts of the University of the Pacific won Women’s #1 Singles at the 2023 USA Racquetball Intercollegiate Championships at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio last weekend. She defeated Andrea Ibarra of the University of New Mexico in the final, 15-7, 15-7. Roberts’s win was a successful defence of the title, which she won for the first time last year.

John Dowell from the University of Missouri won Men’s #1 Singles in a tie-breaker over Nathan Buring of Oregon State University, 12-15, 15-8, 11-9. It was Dowell’s first Intercollegiate title.

Buring did win Men’s #1 Doubles with Cody Boucher by beating Arthur Schmeiser and Patrick Biegun (Northern Arizona), 15-8, 15-0, in the final. That was a measure of revenge for last year, when they lost to Schmeiser and Ben Baron in the semi-finals.

Baldwin Wallace’s Angie Case and Julia Stein won Women’s #1 Doubles, as they upset the top seeds Abby Lachance and Kate Zawalski of the University of Missouri, 15-7, 15-8, in the final. It was the second year Lachance and Zawalski lost in the final, as they last year's final to Roberts and Alondra Canchola.

Intercollegiate participation

There were 109 players at the 2023 Intercollegiate Championships, which was up from last year’s 88, but still lower than the numbers seen pre-pandemic, when there were regularly over 200 players in this event.

The women’s participation was 36.7%, which was down slightly from the last two events, when over 40% of the players were women. But it’s a higher rate than in any of the seven years before 2019.

Also of note is that there were no players from the University of Colorado - Pueblo, which has been one of the strongest programs for more than two decades.
