Monday doubles results & draws at 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships

A sad event in doubles Monday at the 2023 Pan American Racquetball Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, as Canadian Samuel Murray went down in the tie-breaker of their Men’s Doubles match with Mexico. It have been a great match to that point with all four players - Canadians Murray and Coby Iwaasa and Mexicans Eduardo Portillo and Rodrigo Montoya - making wonderful plays.

Then at 6-4 in game five, Murray twisted his left knee, and went down. Play continued for a couple shots before everyone realized that Murray was injured. They helped Murray off the court, and upon a brief examination determined it was better that he not continue, so Mexico won, 8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-3, 7-4, injury forfeit. The win gives Mexico top seed for the medal round that begins Tuesday.

Word was that Murray will be re-evaluated on Tuesday to determine his fitness to continue in the tournament.

In a bit of a surprise, Cubans Yandy Espinosa and Maikel Moyet came back from a 2-1 down against Chileans Rafael Gatica and Rodrigo Salgado to win, 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, and claim third spot in Group 3.

In Women’s Doubles, there was one closely contested match and one tie-breaker on Monday. The closely contested match was between traditional powerhouses Mexico and the USA with Mexico managing to carry the day in four games. Alexandra Herrera and Montserrat Mejia defeated Michelle Key and Erika Manilla, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7, and win game two, so they will be 2nd seeds in the medal round.

The tie-breaker saw Ecuador hold on to defeat Costa Rica. Maria Jose Muñoz and Ana Sarmiento won the first two games against Jimena Gomez and Maricruz Ortiz, but then had to win it in a tie-breaker, 11-5, 11-3, 7-11, 8-11, 11-6, which gave them 3rd spot in Group 3.

The USA was also involved in a close match in Mixed Doubles, and unfortunately for them again came out on the losing end, as Argentina’s Maria Jose Vargas and Diego Garcia defeated Michelle Key and Sam Bredenbeck, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10. The win put Argentina on top of Group 3.
