Play underway at 2023 KWM Gutterman IRT SoCal Open

The International Racquetball Tour (IRT) is in action this weekend with the 2023 KWM Gutterman SoCal Open in Canoga Park, California. Play began on Thursday, and there were no surprises in early play, although there were some notable matches.

Veteran Rocky Carson, former IRT #1 and International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Champion, beat Cody Elkins, 15-2, 15-1, to set up a showdown with another former IRF World Champion: Rodrigo Montoya. Montoya defeated Cristhian Sanchez, 15-5, 15-5, Thursday.

Also, Japanese veteran Hiroshi Shimizu made the trip across the Pacific for the weekend. He played 6th seed Alejandro Landa Thursday, and lost 15-6, 15-9.

Finally, Alvaro Beltran, who has been out of action since October, when he injured his left arm playing at the 3WallBall Outdoor World Championships in Las Vegas, is in the doubles draw with Montoya. They are the top seeds, and later today will play 8th seeds Robert Collins and Guillermo Jesus Ortega Jr., who defeated 9th seeds Erick Cuevas Fernandez and Carlos Ramirez, 13-15, 15-0, 11-6, on Thursday.

You can see some of the IRT action via the usual IRT media outlets: The IRT YouTube channel or the IRT Facebook page. Singles play continues with the Round of 16 Friday morning at 10 and 11 AM followed by the doubles quarterfinals at 1 PM. The singles final will be Sunday at 11 AM with doubles to follow at Noon.
