Day 1 of 2024 Pan American Championships

Day one of competition at the XXXV Pan American Championships in Guatemala City is over, and there were no real surprises, although there were several close matches. There are 10 countries competing compared with 14 last year. The big absence is Bolivia, who won both Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles last year.

On the women’s side, Argentina’s María José Vargas and Natalia Mendez are two of the favourites in singles, as well as doubles, with Chile’s Carla Muñoz and American Michelle Key also podium candidates in singles.

In doubles, past the Argentines it’s probably Muñoz and Paula Mansilla, and then it’s not so clear. The USA’s young team of Naomi Ros and Lexi York and Maria Cespedes and Merynanyelly Delgado of the Dominican Republic could both be tough.

On the men’s side, the favourites in singles are Mexican Rodrigo Montoya, American Jake Bredenbeck, Canadian Samuel Murray, and Costa Rican Andrés Acuña. Those four are also playing doubles, so they should be considered the podium favourites in that too. Montoya is playing with Sebastian Hernandez, Bredenbeck with his brother Sam, Murray with Coby Iwaasa, and they won the Pan Am Championship in 2022, and Acuña’s partner is Gabriel Garcia.

The draws are available through the R2 Sports website. Also, some of the matches are being streamed live, so check out the IRF Facebook page or the IRF YouTube channel for matches.
