The team competition is underway at the XXXVI Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, and as in the past it can be difficult to play well in the team competition after doing well in the individual competition. So it was for the Argentina men, who were in both the singles and the doubles final on Thursday, but failed to reach the podium in the team competition, as they lost to Mexico in the quarterfinals.
In that quarterfinal, Mexico defeated Argentina in two straight matches. Javier Mar ousted Diego Garcia, 11-8, 12-10, 11-7, in what was a rematch of the Men’s Singles gold medal final that Garcia won. Then Rodrigo Montoya defeated Gerson Miranda Martinez, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, to put Mexico into the semi-finals.
However, in the semis, Mexico lost to Bolivia in three matches, as Carlos Keller beat Mar, 11-7, 13-11, 11-8, but Mar and Montoya defeated Kadim Carrasco and Conrrado Moscoso, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, which forced a deciding third match between Moscoso and Montoya, which Moscoso won, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8.
The USA will be Bolivia’s opponent in the final, and they also needed three matches to win their semi-final against Costa Rica. In the first match, Andrés Acuña of Costa Rica defeated American Thomas Carter, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9, but in the second match the Bredenbeck brothers - Jake and Sam - beat Acuña and Gabriel Garcia, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, to set up a deciding match. In that match, Jake Bredenbeck defeated Felipe Camacho, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, to send the USA to the final.
Unlike the men’s competition, the Women’s Team event has been similar to the individual events, as Mexico will face Argentina in the final, and both Women’s Singles and Doubles finals were Mexico v. Argentina battles with each country winning one.
In one semi-final, top seeds Mexico defeated Canada in two straight matches. Alexandra Herrera defeated Frédérique Lambert in three close games, 12-10, 11-9, 12-10, and then she teamed up with Samantha Salas to beat Chloe Jauvin and Ofelia Wilscam, 11-3, 11-3, 11-2.
In the other semi-final, Argentina defeated the USA in two matches. Valeria Centellas eked out a five game win over Lexi York, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9, and then teamed up with Natalia Mendez to defeat York and Michelle Key, 11-5, 13-11, 11-7.
The draws are available through the R2 Sports website. Also, some of the matches are being streamed live, so check out the IRF Facebook page or the IRF YouTube channel for matches. Times below are mountain daylight time.
